smithnc Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Is there a way (easy way?) to write events to syslog? I like getting custom notifications when the garage door has been opened or a sensor has tripped but I would like to write notifications to a syslog server instead so there is a record, but not necessarily an email or a SMS message.
paulbates Posted August 2 Posted August 2 (edited) No, it requires some "sawing and banging", eg manual work, but can be done. This example is based on a raspberry pi, but guessing the method could be modified for other platforms. Take a look here, especially down around post 4: There is an older node server, pre-polyglot called Nodelink. It was many products integrated into one application, and it included a data logger that could write to syslog. I used it, but it was many years ago. Edited August 2 by paulbates

I don't really know what a syslog is (I even Googled it and still don't understand!). However, I log my variables into a Google Sheet every minute or upon certain events. Works great for me. The thread got somewhat hijacked, but others had input on how they log things. 1
