JohnC Posted February 26 Posted February 26 I want to place my Zmatter dongle outside my house in line-of-sight with the Zwave modules to maximize the range. ' There is an open field between where I plan to put the Zmatter dongle and one of the controlled Zwave modules, so I can't bridge the distance with a mesh network of Zwave modules. I plan to use a USB-to-ethernet extender to place it 40' feet away from the Eisy. The Eisy normally powers the Zmatter dongle directly with a USB 3.0 port . USB standards say that a USB port supplies 5V at up to 0.9A (4.5W). I see on a Reddit post that some people have done something similar using a USB 2.0 USB-to-ethernet extender powering the Zmatter dongle. USB 2.0 ports are specified to put out only 0.5A (2.5W) . They said it worked, but the question is, how well ? How well will the Zmatter dongle work if it is limited to 2.5W ? Would it be expected to have better range if it were powered by a USB 3.0 port supplying up to 4.5W ? What is the power consumption of this Zmatter dongle, it is not on the specs I can see ? Quote
Solution Techman Posted February 26 Solution Posted February 26 Why not just use a Zwave 800 amplifier/repeater. Placing the Zmatter dongle outside of the house, and exposing it to weather, is probably not a good idea Zooz 800 Series Z-Wave Plus Range Extender ZAC38 - The Smartest House Quote
JohnC Posted February 26 Author Posted February 26 (edited) That's a great idea, and a less expensive option than what I was thinking. Good reviews for the product on Amazon with one of the few critical comments saying: "Great product but can get directly from Zooz for 10 dollars cheaper." Thank you Still it would be good to post somewhere the power consumption of this Zmatter dongle. I would like to leave this post open until there is an answer to that question. Every time I've bought a Zooz device I've checked its price on Amazon. It has always been higher on Amazon, with the difference being even greater than the shipping The Smartest House charges by a bit. The only downside to buying direct is that it's hard to fully opt out of their annoying emails - but that's true of most companies, in my experience. -Tom Quote

JohnC Posted February 27 Author Posted February 27 Per UD support: "I don't have the exact specifications regarding power consumption. This said, it should by fully functional using the USB 2.0 port." 1 Quote
