AC won't launch from Iox Launcher. Win 11

I tried to access my eISYs today, going the usual route of clicking IoX Launcher on my desktop. It found both boxes, but when I click on one to launch AC console LAN (or any other option for that matter), it hangs:

 - an Icon appears on the task bar, after it thinks for a while, but whey you try to expand the window, nothing happens.

Went browsing to through the forum, uninstalled and reinstalled latest Java, cleared caches, downloaded start.jlnp, rebooted computer etc. I even turned off all but the main monitor, thinking the window might be hiding somewhere (happened with Fusion 360), to no avail.

Iox is on 5.9.1.

I can access PG3 and I can SSH onto both eISYs.

And, once I try to start AC console (with no success), I have to kill the IoX Launcher via Task Manager. Now other way to terminate it.

Any ideas?

There was some traffic about getting rid of AC console etc a few months back. Sure would be good...

Cheers

It sounds like you did everything to eliminate java on the PC (assuming its a pc). Anything else PC wise change? New PC, network card, virus software?

No changes to the PC other than regular Win11 updates. This setup was working properly before

I'm running Windows 11 with all the latest windows and java updates and the admin console works without any issues. Take a look at these two links

Thanks @Techman,

I went through the links, looking for differences. Can't seem to get it to work.

Like I said, once I try to launch the AC LAN from within IoX Launcher, it thinks for a while and then the icon of the IoX Admin Console appears in the task bar. when I hover over it I see the name in the title bar and a white panel. There is a single line in that white panel, but it is too small to read. When I hover over the white area, all open windows on my screens disappear. This is normal behavior in Win11, except that the only the affected window should show... which makes me think that the program is running, but not displaying...

@TriLife long shot but look to see if you have any UD*.state files. Delete them all. From what you're describing I think a *.state file might be hiding the admin console. The only way to kill it is through task manager at that point.

If you're able to get the IoX Finder window to open then it's more than likely not a Java issue, but the other option is to enable logging and show the Java console. Make sure you're not seeing any errors in there (I'm not sure what to look for, but you'll probably notice if you have errors).

I too have a computer with Win11 with everything up to date and can load things fine.

Have you been sure to clear java cache just to be certain? Sometimes (and I've noticed this more with Win11) the Java updates really foul things up for admin console and takes a java cache clear and once or twice I've had to completely remove Java and reinstall.

In Windows 11 search for a folder called "temp"

In that folded you'll find the files that @Geddy mentioned (see attached screenshot) They're all temporary files and can be safety deleted

Thanks @Techman.
I found temp/ but didn't locate any ud*.state files in there. But late last night, after not touching the PC for a long while, the AC showed up, with a different color scheme. Go figure. I had added the runtime variable to speed up the script.

This morning, after reboot, the AC showed up right away with the correct color scheme. Go figure.

Case closed.

Thanks @Geddy,

No ud*.state files anywhere, but after I added '-Xmx512m' in the runtime parameters in Java, AC started showing up. another case of little patience (so typical for me).

Cheers!

@Geddy,

Wasn't there talk a few months ago that the Admin Console was being deprecated in favor of something more modern?

There's software under development that would replace the admin console a web and/or app that would be served off of eisy. The end of year 24 announcement was that the foundational underpinnings were installed with the big update from earlier this year... which is different than the finished product being delivered and ready. In a different post, I recall that initially it would be Insteon only in the first rev when that's delivered.

It's not there in usable form yet.

Thanks @paulbates,

I guess I need to practice my patience some more. Unfortunately I have no Insteon at all. Only Tasmota and Zwave.

Cheers

Strang you don't see any .state files, but I just did a search with Explorer (in Win10pro) and didn't find them in search. They're in the local temp folder for me.

C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp

You might need to show hidden files (or folders). But glad just adding the java memory line helps. If your system has a lot of memory you could make that 512 higher. My system runs 8GB of ram so I keep mine at 1024m. I think this setting is also removed when Java updates as I currently don't have one set on the current laptop I'm using. I'm fairly certain I've set it in the past on this machine so guessing an update removes that setting. That's another thing that might cause it to hang following a Java update (**mental note to add this to my troubleshooting steps/tips in the future**).

I think UD is still working on something(as @paulbates says), but I am sure they have other things to sort out/resolve in the meantime. Personally, I'd rather keep the system we know (and "love") for now while other features get added. UD seems to be trying to fine tune handling the matter protocol while still adding Zigbee (and Z-Wave) device support. Throwing in a new admin control or dashboard (whatever they'll call it) could really freak the user base out. Way to many variables at that point...so many different browsers with addons and blockers and firewall issues that I'm sure the forums will be crazy whenever the new AC method goes live. Not to mention monitor sizes, display resolutions and color schemes - way to many things to potentially go "wonky" that the forums (and/or UD) would need to help with.

If you have a firewall program such as Norton, it periodically deletes all the files in the Windows temp folder. The next time you access the eisy via the Admin console the "state" files are recreated, which could be why you're up and running again

@Geddy, I went hunting and did indeed find the ud*.state files in C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp. Went ahead and deleted them too.

Also increased java memory to 1024m. Thanks for that hint.

@Techman, if Norton can delete them, can I not do so manually as well? The /temp folder is close to 6GB! I used to have System Mechanic, which did do clean-up chores like this, but didn't bother install it on my new rig. maybe I should install it again.

Update: I used Windows Disk Cleanup, which includes deleting temporary files. All in all close to 8GB. Good riddance. And I enabled Windows Storage Sense, which will do this automatically in the future.

Thanks to both of you again.

Yes, you can manually delete everything in the temp folder, first close all open programs then delete the folder contents.

To make it easier, I put a shortcut to my temp folder on my desktop
