November 30, 2025Nov 30 I am using the ISY 994i and up until a few weeks ago everything was working great. Now if I turn lights on or off other lights that are on will flash on and off. I have several motion sensors to control outside lights and when those are activated and the light outside comes on and then turns off after programmed setting in ISY 994 some of my inside lights that are on will flash on and off then back to on. Do I have a bunch of switches going bad? All my switches are the Insteon togglelinc type. Anyone have an idea what is happening. Thamks
November 30, 2025Nov 30 Do you notice if it's always the same inside lights that turn on, off and then back on?Have the motion sensor batteries been replaced recently? Maybe something to try.
December 2, 2025Dec 2 Author Its not just the motion sensor. I have a couple insteon multi button remotes that do the same thing just randomly flashing some lights on and off. I have two togglelinc switches for my hall light for stairs going upstairs and when I turn those two on or off they also make other lights flash on and off. This is all random. I have not made any changes to the programming in the ISY 994I for a couple years, this just started a few weeks ago. I have checked all the settings in the 994 and nothing looks different. Are all my togglelinc switches failin? They were all purchased and installed in the same year or so, 10 - 12 years ago
December 7, 2025Dec 7 Author More checking I have found that it is three togglelinc switches that are doing the on/off flashing when something else has been turned on or off. It is random and not all the time.
December 8, 2025Dec 8 @dennisric , the "flashing" sounds like a noise and/or power supply filtering problem (capacitor dying). Are your togglelincs on the same circuit?Have you changed the loads on the switches?Any recent issues with the utility transformer/neutral line to the house? (or other electrical work). I agree that a simple reset/restore is easy and prudent. If that doesn't work you might try swapping one device out to see if that corrects the problem. The togglelincs are ~10 years old or more. Very possible that the power supply's are starting to have issues.
December 10, 2025Dec 10 Author Thank you for suggestions. I haven't done the reset/restore but will try that next when I can find some time.
Monday at 12:48 AM3 days Author Took awhile for me to have time to check again. I did the reset/restore on one of the togglelincs that are flashing on and off and it did not make a difference. I found four of my togglelinc switches doing same thing. These four also are no longer being recognized when doing a query they come up with ! symbol and can't be controlled by the ISY 994i. I think these switches are dead or on the way out. They still work if you use them directly to turn on or off the light. What is bothering me that all my switches are togglelincs and I don't like or want to use the paddle ones. I wish the company that took over insteon would bring back all the products. I am going to look into some other brand that has regular toggle switch for home automation. Insteon seems to be going the way of X10. If anyone knows where I can get some new togglelinc switches please let me know. Thanks Edited Monday at 12:49 AM3 days by dennisric
Monday at 12:53 PM2 days It's a bit odd to have 4 devices with failing power supplies that can still control their loads. Is it possible you had a power event to damaged things? These are all powerline only devices. It's still possible that you have a noise source/absorber on the line that is preventing communication. Installing a dual band helper (LampLinc) or filtering suspect devices may help. Understand that replacing a single togglelinc isn't an option since you don't have a spare. You could try removing 1 switch and pigtailing to an appliance cord - plug in near the PLM to see if it communicates. Remember to CAP the red wire.Options for replacement aren't great. I would normally suggest Zooz Z-wave (Zen73 and Zen74) toggles, but I would NOT suggest these for the ISY994 since at best it's a 500 series z-wave (Polisy and Eisy support 700 and 800 series). If you determine that the switches are dying, and there are no good options for replacement, it is possible to replace the capacitors on the switch power supply. If you don't feel that adventurous, there were some people providing re-cap services for PLM's. There may be some available for Togglelincs as well.
