Internet Access Question

I just purchased and ISY99i. I have a few questions, hopefully someone can help.

I'm not interested in connecting to my ISY from an external location yet. However, I am interested in getting the sunrise/sunset for my local zip code and I'd like to also use the Weatherbug module.

In order for these to work, do I need to enable internet access? I know that sounds like a silly question but everything I've seen about Internet access in the forums discusses controlling you ISY from a remote location. At this point I just want to get information from places.

Also, If I do need to enable internet access, can someone point me to a location with Airport Extreme instructions?

You don't need to enable internet access, in fact, you don't even need an internet connection to get your sunset/sunrise.

Under "configuration" tab, "system" subtab, you will see where to fill in your city. This sets the sunrise/sunset.

An internet connection (or at least a home network connection) is necessary if you want to control your isy from anywhere but plugged directly into it.

An internet connection is completely necessary for weatherbug.

Please note, an internet connection and internet access are not the same thing. Enabling internet access automatically configures your home network to forward external requests to your ISY. This only works with certain routers so if you don't have one of those you need to do it manually. An internet connection is necessary if you want your ISY to be able to pull info from the internet (like weatherbug), or send stuff to the internet (like emails), but otherwise is optional. It will still control Insteon stuff without it.

Thanks, that clears it up a bit. All I need is internet access for my uses. However, I can't verify that I have that. My computers are working fine. My router is working also. But every time I try "locate me", send and email notification, or txt notification I get errors. How can I verify that my ISY is actually getting to the internet?

Hello JodyO819,

I do not think that your ISY is actually getting out to the Internet. The best test would be to use the Synchronize button under NTP settings (Configuration | System tab).

If you have setup a static IP address for your ISY, some routers may block access to devices that are NOT DHCP enabled. If your router supports DHCP reservations, it would be best to make ISY have a DHCP address and then put reservations in the router.

If you are still having problems, please contact our tech support team and we'll remote in to your computer and do the configurations for you.

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi JODYO,

There is a link in our MAC forum concerning the Airports. Airport Extreme Port Forwarding.

If you don't need/want access to the ISY from outside your local network you only need to follow the instructions from Apple to reserve a DHCP address for the ISY.

Providing a specific DHCP address for client computers

Be sure the ISY is then set to DHCP.

Rand,

I have the ISY set up for DHCP. I also have an address reserved in the Airport. I have verified that the ISY is getting that address from the airport. But I still have grayed out Locate Me screens, email generates errors, and Weatherbug has no data.

What next?
