someguy Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I have become comfortable and enjoyed accessing my ISY from work and when out of town. I'd like to step up to connecting my work computer to my home computer. I already access my work computer using a system that was set up by our IT guy. It involves a VPN and a Remote Desktop Connection. I am not real comfortable with just opening up my computer so that anyone could try to connect to it. I'd like to either use a VPN or maybe limit the outside computers by MAC address or something like that to increase security. Is there a product or a website that someone could point me to for this? I appreciate the help.
brad77 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 If your router supports VPN, that's the best way to go. Not only is access further restricted via an additional password, but traffic will be encrypted once you're connected. You can simply forward port 3389 to your computer at home to get Remote Desktop access, but keep in mind that unless you install a certificate your connection will not be encrypted (see instructions here). Additionally, you must make sure to disable the guest account and give all user accounts strong passwords. Alternatively, you can use a service like GoToMyPC that works through the GoToMyPC service. I've found it to work well, and I believe that the service is free for a single PC.
