elvisimprsntr Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Please consider adding WiFi capability to the next generation ISY, perhaps with a built in wired hub/switch.
Michel Kohanim Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Hi elvisimprsntr, We already have a commercial version with WiFi/3G/4G/Zigbee/INSTEON router but, currently, it's too expensive for residential applications. In short, we are on it. With kind regards, Michel
elvisimprsntr Posted October 30, 2011 Author Posted October 30, 2011 Hi elvisimprsntr, We already have a commercial version with WiFi/3G/4G/Zigbee/INSTEON router but, currently, it's too expensive for residential applications. In short, we are on it. With kind regards, Michel Seems like the next generation ISY could be based on the following: http://www.marvell.com/solutions/plug-computers/ http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/ http://www.ionicsplug.com/compare.html Other than the IR receiver (which current model ISY doesn't support advanced IR protocols) seems like a COTS plug computer would have all the interfaces the current ISY needs and more. The manufacturing cost has to be significantly less than the current platform which would increase your margins and provide a path for adding more advance features. For example a 10 foot interface using the HDMI interface connected to a TV, the addition of a SIRI/IRIS like voice command interface to accept voice commands, etc. If you don't someone else will. Until then, I will use one of these if I move the ISY to a location in which I don't have access to a LAN connection. http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/adapte ... ewprod.htm
Michel Kohanim Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Hello elvisimprsntr, Thanks so very much for the information. We have investigated all these platforms (based on Sheeva plugin) thoroughly. The cost of production and manufacturing is much higher than our current cost while we would need to move to a Linux based operating system which is quite powerful but at the same time quite difficult to manage for a small company. With kind regards, Michel
elvisimprsntr Posted November 20, 2011 Author Posted November 20, 2011 Michel, Just announced. Very interesting little device. One can simply plug into any computer or HDTV instantly gain a 10 foot interface. from the connector configuration I assume it can draw power from either the USB or HDMI connector. http://www.fxitech.com/products/ Elvis
Michel Kohanim Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Hi Elvis, Thank you. How does this device help us? We do not have USB host capabilities. With kind regards, Michel
mschaefe Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 I've done a reasonable amount of work with Android and related devices. I think there are some really interesting and cheap devices out there. The thing that I'm learning with Android is that it is not a huge difference between custom hardware UI (think microwave interface) and having a pretty slick touchscreen interface, especially since development and debugging costs are such a substantial portion of the overall price. 1) Beagleboard - this has serial, USB, network and HDMI output all for about $80 2) Pandaboard - much higher-end version could support more home-gateway like functionality (Telephone, Voice activation, image processing for motion detection) $250 With the Linux OS underneath, there's a lot more support for user-supplied devices and user-supplied interfaces.
PurdueGuy Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 I for one, love that the ISY isn't a router. That adds complexity. My Vera is a router, and I don't use it for that at all. I don't want my router to be restarting and have all IP traffic in the house stop. That would be a disaster. My Vera can be a wifi client, so I can plug it in anywhere. That's a nice feature. I wouldn't mind the ISY having built-in *client* wifi, but *I* don't need it to be an access point/router.
mschaefe Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Sorry, I meant home gateway in terms of gateway to home automation, not a network router. I wouldn't want the device to be a router, either.
MWareman Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 I wouldn't mind the ISY having built-in *client* wifi It certainly would make dragging the ISY around to enroll ZWave devices easier.... The Vera even comes with a LiPo battery you can use to power Vera during enrollment for a wireless experience. Of course - there are many so called 'game adapters' that we could use.. So, WiFi client, and an internal (replaceable) battery to power the ISY during power outages and ZWave enrollment (just enough power for a couple of hours I think.....)
Michel Kohanim Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Hello everyone, Thanks so very much for the feedback. We are taking all these notes down for our next gen ISY. WiFi is definitely in the roadmap and so is IPv6. Others include Websockets and full REST command to all SOAP based services. Again, thanks so very much for the feedback. With kind regards, Michel
