GPG Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I would like to try accessing the ISY remotely. My router is a Linksys befsr41, so I understand I have to configure it manually. My ISP issues dynamic IP's (possibly as frequently as daily). I have read the 'ISY behind NAT' post. Questions: 1-What steps are required to manually configure the router for internet access? 2-How do you know, if it has been configured correctly? 3-Would upgrading to a router currently supported by UD provide advantages? 4-For me would remote access be somewhat limited because of the dynamic IP issue? Michel, This might be a good candidate for a "Remote Access 101" for those of us not familiar with accessing their systems remotely.
Guest Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I have Verizon FIOS and the modem/router is all one piece. Defiantly going to be a manual thing.
sloop Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 did verizon provide the router? i have an actiontec mi424wr provided by verizon - i'd like to change it but suspect i would be limited in my choices because i need the coax port for the fios/tv set top box

It is also a MI424WR, and like you mentioned...the FIOS set top box is dependant on the modem.
sloop Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 did dhcp work for you or did you have to manually config your ip address?
Guest Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 did dhcp work for you or did you have to manually config your ip address? Comes back :null when I try to Enable Internet Access
sloop Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 not sure if it is the same thing, but there is an EI command in the serial console thingy i was wondering if you had to use the CT command from that same console - i never could get my router to assign an ip address and had to assign it using the CT command - i suspect my router was not fast enough in its response to the command for an address assignment - just a guess - i also cannot find the internet gateway - do you get any startup errors when the isy boots?
Michel Kohanim Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 GPG, Apologies for tardy reply. Mr. Sanctuary tried automatic configuration with BEFSR81. Have you tried Enable Internet Access with the new release of ISY (2.3). If so, are you still having issues? You are 100% correct vis-a-vis remote access 101. In short, you would have to create a Port Forwarding rule in your router. This said, however, if your ISY is being assigned DHCP addresses by your router, then you might run into an issue where ISY is assigned a different IP address (at some point) and thus your port forwarding will no longer work. So, here are the instructions: a. Make ISY use a static IP address: i. In the Run dialog, type: telnet your.isy.ip 126 ii. type CT (configure TCP/IP) iii. enter the desired IP address for ISY iv. enter the mask (usually 255.255.255.0) v. enter the gateway IP (usually the IP address of your router; i.e. 192.168.1.1) vi. enter your DNS IP (you have to look at your router's configuration page for this address) vii. you are done; wait for the system to reboot b1. For Linksys, open up the router's adminstrative page i. Go to Applications and Gaming ii. Go to Port Forwarding (sometimes, it's under UPnP) iii. Create a rule such that all TCP (not UDP) traffic directed to ISY's port is handled by ISY's static IP address b2. For DLink i. Go to Firewall tab (under Advanced) ii. Follow steps ii and iii in b1 (above) Please let me know if you run into any issues. With regards, Michel I would like to try accessing the ISY remotely. Michel Kohanim Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Hi Sloop, Long time no see! EI in the shell is equal to File->Enable Internet Access. If I may, I would like to explain the sequence of events at ISY start up: a. Start Network Services (make sure we are on the network and an IP has been assigned) b. Initialize Filesystem (make sure we can get access to the file system on our SD card) c. Initialize Device/Nodes (make sure we can communicate with all the devices configured in ISY) d. Start Logger/UPnP/HTTP/D2D ... (low level services) e. Look for an Internet Gateway: i. This issues a UPnP Search Request for all the UPnP Gateway devices on the network ii. If one is found, and if Enable Internet Access has been issued at some time before ISY startup, then try to communicate with the router and get the necessary information to create a port forwarding rule in the router. This may fail if the router does not want to give out that information in which case the status of Internet Access becomes Disabled iii. If one is not found (i.e. the router never responded to the UPnP search request), then the status of Internet Access becomes Disabled When you get "null", it means that the router did not want to supply "port forwarding" information in step ei. Now, I have to emphasize that not being able to enable/disable internet access has no bearing whatsoever on the operations of ISY. As far as your router not being able to assing an DHCP address, that's quite strange because that function has nohting to do with UPnP. If your other devices on the network can be assigned a DHCP address, then we surely have to get one of these ActionTec routers and figure out why that is the case. With regards, Michel not sure if it is the same thing, but there is an EI command in the serial console thingy i was wondering if you had to use the CT command from that same console - i never could get my router to assign an ip address and had to assign it using the CT command - i suspect my router was not fast enough in its response to the command for an address assignment - just a guess - i also cannot find the internet gateway - do you get any startup errors when the isy boots?
GPG Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Michel, Thanks for the instructions. I gave it a try last night and I seemed to be able to make all the necessary changes. Somewhere along the way I must have missed something, because I locked up the ISY. The ISY now has the TX and RX leds constantly on and I have lost the connection to the router. I am able to get to the ISY via Hyperterminal and reversed the settings I had made. I also deleted the Port Forwarding settings I had made on the router. Before I send it a Factory Reset (FR), I there anything else I need to verify or change?
Michel Kohanim Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 GPG, Hello and I am so sorry to hear that you are having trouble with ISY. I don't think what you did has anything to do with double solid lights. But, before you do factory reset, please reboot ISY and look at your hyperterminal for any startup failures. Would you please let me know what you see. Thanks and with sincere apologies, Regards, Michel, Thanks for the instructions. GPG Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Thanks for the fast reply. I won't be back on site until later today. However, last night I did reboot the ISY and it came back up with the TX & RX leds on. I was still able to get in using Hyperterminal and I do not recall getting any error messages. I will try it again tonight and let you know.
Michel Kohanim Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 My pleasure. Very much looking forward to resolving this issue. With kind regards, Michel Thanks for the fast reply. GPG Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Michel, I powered up the ISY and the TX and RX leds both remain on. I am able to run the shell via Hyperterminal and get no errors when logging in. I can get the time and version number (1.0). When I request a reboot (RS) I receive the following: Username:Waiting 2sec to start 'A' to abort Configured IP = 0.0.0.0 Configured Mask = 0.0.0.0 MAC Address= 00:03:f4:02:25:e7 Configuring Network Services Failed to get DHCP address Configuring the File System File System init failedà I checked and DHCP is enabled on the router and the DHCP Active IP Table shows an item with the ISY IP of 192.168.1.100 and the correct MAC address, but the Client Host name is blank. Is there anything else I need to check?
Michel Kohanim Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 GPG, Unfortunately, I think you have a corrupt file system. Do you have a recent backup of your configuration? In short, we can do two things: a. We'll gladly pay for the shipping and have you send us the unit to fix b. If you feel up to it, I can guide you through fixing the issue. It would be great if you have an extra SD card ( Sincere apologies for the inconvenience, With kind regards, Michel Michel, I powered up the ISY and the TX and RX leds both remain on. GPG Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Let's go with Plan b. I do have several very recent configuration backups. I do not have an SD card at the moment, but I can borrow one tomorrow, if necessary. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
Michel Kohanim Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 GPG, Thanks so very much for taking it upon yourself to do this. Shortly, I will send the instructions to your private mailbox. Again, with sincere apologies for the inconvenience, With kind regards, Michel Let's go with Plan b. I do have several very recent configuration backups. I do not have an SD card at the moment, but I can borrow one tomorrow, if necessary. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
GPG Posted July 20, 2007 Author Posted July 20, 2007 Thank you for the assistance. I forgot to mention that I do have an SD card reader/writer on hand, if that will also help. In the mean time I await your instructions.
GPG Posted July 20, 2007 Author Posted July 20, 2007 Michel, I am very impressed with the way this was resolved. I did take your advice about using a new card. The instructions were clear and very easy to follow. This certainly is a refreshing experience compared to the cross-shipping method we have to do with Smarthome. Granted you may not be able to do it this way under all circumstances, but where possible this is an absolute blessing. ...and now back to my original task...
Michel Kohanim Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 GPG, I am so very glad that we could resolve it and thanks so very much for giving us the opportunity to resolve it remotely! Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any other issues with ISY. With kind regards, Michel Michel, I am very impressed with the way this was resolved. GPG Posted July 20, 2007 Author Posted July 20, 2007 I made all the changes outlined above and am able to log into the ISY on my local computer using the address format: myISPip:port/0/x. When I attempt to login using a computer outside my network, I only get as far as the "Please keep this window open" screen; the ISY console and login dialog never open up. Is this a firewall issue or something else? I am running Norton (NIS 2007) on the local computer.
Michel Kohanim Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 GPG, Would you be kind enough to PM me your external IP address/ISY port? Let me see if I can get to it from here and, if so, then we know it's a firewall issue on the computer you are using to access your ISY. Thanks and with kind regards, Michel I made all the changes outlined above and am able to log into the ISY on my local computer using the address format: myISPip:port/0/x. GPG Posted July 22, 2007 Author Posted July 22, 2007 Final follow up: Thanks to Michel's help we were able to verify that my router was correctly configured for remote access. My experience with setting up the Linksys BEFSR41 router was somewhat compicated by the problem I was having with the ISY itself, but after that was resolved, I have to say that things went very well.
