bipto Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Over the weekend I added two 2476S SwitchLinc devices controlling an outside light. Installation wient off without a hitch and I was able to link the two devices so that they operated the light in a typical 3-way configuration. I then went to add these linked devices to the ISY99i via the Start Linking dialog and selecting the third option to ensure that the existing device links would be preserved. Though it recognized and added both the primary device and the linked device, it did not create a scene for these devices. Furthermore, when I attempted to create a scene and add the new devices to it manually as responders, the scene would control only the linked device - not the primary device - so the light could not be controlled via the scene. I currently use two similar 2 device (3-way) dimmer (2476D) circuits which I was able to install and configure and add to the ISY without issue, so I am fairly confident I'm doing this right. Could anyone lend any insight as to what the issue might be, or how I might go about troubleshooting it further? My ISY99i firmware revision is 3.1.17 The 2476S SwitchLincs I'm trying to add are revisions v.3A and v.41 Thanks!
LeeG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 As far as the new ISY Scene, both SwitchLincs should be added to the same ISY Scene as Controllers, not Responders. This will cross-link the devices so the LEDs stay in sync when either SwitchLinc is operated with their paddle. The ISY assumes Controllers are also Responders so the ISY Scene can be used to turn both SwitchLincs On or Off. With multiple symptoms, device not controllable with a new Scene and a Scene not being created when the devices were added to the ISY I'm thinking a comm problem to the device that does not get controlled from the ISY Scene. Run a Scene Test on the ISY Scene that has the two switches as Responders. That will confirm the link records are correct if both device are successful. Passing a Scene Test but not responding to the Scene itself from the Admin Console or a Program strongly suggests a comm problem
LeeG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 bipto The SwitchLinc with the v.41 firmware could be an I2CS device which requires 3.2.1 for I2CS support. This would explain the Scene issue. Without the I2CS support the link database cannot be read or written correctly. Run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer with Level 3-Device communications events selected. Create an ISY Scene with the SwitchLinc v.41 firmware as a Responder. Post the event trace. The trace will show if the link database can be read/written under 3.1.17.

LeeG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 It is not an I2CS device. The link written to 1B.87.63 was created successfully which indicates communication between the ISY PLM and that device is good. There were no errors encountered writing the new link record. There could have been comm issues when this device was added but they are not there now. Since a Scene xxxx (where xxxx is a number) was not created when the devices were added I suggest creating a new ISY Scene and add both switches to the ISY Scene as Controllers. That should cross-link the devices and the Scene should control both devices. If something does not work from there we will be starting with a known. Once the ISY Scene has been created and the two devices added as Controllers, run a Scene Test to see if the test shows Successful for both devices.
bipto Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 I did as you suggested and the result was the same as when I had added the devices to the scene as responders - the 2476S v.3A device reponds to scene commands, the v.41 device does not. Below is the trace log for the scene test. LeeG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 This is not a comm problem per see. The 1B.87.63 device said it could not turn Off as directed. Does this device have the load and if so what type of load?
bipto Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Yes, 1B.87.63 (v.41) is the device physically connected to the load - 3 CFL can lights. When I attempt to fire the scene manually this is the device that does not respond. Curiously, attempts to control this one device via the ISY apart from the scene are successful...
LeeG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Suggest disconnecting the Red load wire and run the Scene Test again. Some CFLs are known to generate enough interference to prevent a device from turning Off.
bipto Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Suggest disconnecting the Red load wire and run the Scene Test again. Some CFLs are known to generate enough interference to prevent a device from turning Off. Wife would shoot me if I broke out the tools at this hour... As an alternate test I pulled out the CFL bulbs and replaced them with a single 60W incandescent - results are identical. It appears that the same device (1B.87.63) is failing to respond to the ON command as well as the OFF (which is the same behavior I see when firing the scene manually) but it looks like the event viewer clears itself between the ON and OFF events so the log I included may not show this...
LeeG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 That is correct. The Scene Test clears the event log so the preparatory work to put the devices in a known state is not in the event log. The switch could be defective but that is a very last option. Suggest factory resetting both switches followed by a restore device.
LeeG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Has the wiring to this device been double checked with a meter to insure the wiring is correct.
bipto Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 I have tried several times restoring the switches to the factory default state, but have never tried Restore Device - this will be the first thing I try when I get home from work tomorrow. If we're leaning toward a defective device, I do have a spare (v.41) I can swap in - I could give that a try tomorrow as well. Thanks for your help Lee!
LeeG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I'm not thinking a defective device. Based on the initial post that the switches were Set button linked together and work perfectly would indicate the switch is not defective.
bipto Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Ok, so I pretty much went back to square one tonight. Re-verified the wiring of both devices (metered hot, neutral, and ground connections - all ok), reset the devices and re-linked them. Just as before both switches work perfectly when linked in a 3-way scenario. I re-added them to the ISY99. At this point I note (just as before) that though the ISY fails to create a scene for the devices based on the existing links, I am able to control both switches individually via the ISY. So again I manually created a scene and added the two devices to it as controllers - and but I'm afraid the result was exactly the same. The scene will control the v.3A 2476S device [1B.8A.D9], but not the v.41 2476S device [1B.87.63], and the scene test fails accordingly. Per your suggestion I tried the Restore Device operation on both devices and though the Restore operations themselves succeed, in the end the scene still fails. The only new observation I made tonight which may hold some significance is this: When I attempt to add the linked devices to the ISY, if I perform the linking procedure on the v.3A 2476S device [1B.8A.D9] it will find the other device [1B.87.63] in the links and add them both as expected. If however, I perform the linking procedure on the v.41 2476S device [1B.87.63], only that one device is added - the other is not found in the links! I repeated this procedure twice to verify. Not quite sure what my next move is... Are there any other logs that I could post that might provide helpful clues? As I mentioned before I do have a spare v.41 2476S that I could swap in but I am reluctant to do so as it does not appear that the device is bad. Is there any value in upgrading to 3.2.1 (Beta) firmware? Again, thanks for your help and your patience! --Bill
schebb Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Bill, Read your posts a couple of times saw that you always linked the devices to each other before adding them to the ISY. The method I've always used is to link the devices to the ISY and allow the 'scene' function of the ISY to create the links between the devices. Remove the two switches from the admin console. Factory reset the two switches. Start admin console and put console into link mode. Push the link tab on each device for about 5 seconds. Allow the ISY to clear all links in the devices. Create scene and drag the two devices into the scene. (the ISY will generate the links) I'm relatively new at this myself, but have always made all links via the ISY admin console. Once the links are made in the scene they will reside in the switch devices and will work even without ISY running. If I missed it above and you have already tried this then pay no attention. Thanks. schebb Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Bill, Missed something in previous post. Add the devices as controllers. Sorry. Steve Sent from my phone
Brian H Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 The ISY99i does not know any links you manually added. Alway do all the adding, linking and scenes through the ISY99i.

Despite my high hopes for this suggestion as it was something I had not thought to try, I'm afraid the news is still bad - I ended up with exactly the same result as when I had linked the devices manually. The bottom line apparently, is this: The 2476S device with v.41 firmare cannot be controlled by the ISY99 via a scene. I followed the suggestion above to the letter, and all of the link / scene operations completed without error. The devices are indeed linked and the switches operate as expected, and I am able to control both switches individually via the ISY99, but as before the scene will control only the v.3A 2476S device [1B.8A.D9] and not the v.41 2476S device [1B.87.63]. Does anyone know when the v.41 firmware was released for the 2476S device? Is it possible that I am the first to encounter this particular issue..?
LeeG Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Run a Show Device Links Table against the v.41 device. All the commands appeared to work but it is worth double checking. We may not have seen all the ways an I2CS device can reject commands.

LeeG Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 The link record flags are invalid. Not surprising the device will not respond to Scene requests. Can you take a screen capture of the Show Device Links Table popup? The posted file is not meant for human analysis. Also after the Show Device completes click on Compare.
bipto Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 I got the ISY links table as well as the Device links table / comparison...
LeeG Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I believe this is an I2CS device. You can see from the Show Device and Compare that the link database is nothing like it should be. The link records that were actually created do not match the commands that were traced and posted earlier. The only way to know for sure is to move to 3.2.1, delete the v.41 SwitchLinc and add it back under 3.2.1. After Deleting the device I suggest doing a factory reset of the SwitchLinc before adding it back under 3.2.1. That way the link database will not have anything left over from the activity on 3.1.17. An event trace of the device add under 3.2.1 will confirm the device is I2CS. Could also do a Show Device Links Table and Compare after adding the SwitchLinc under 3.2.1. If the links table is bad on 3.2.1 the device is defective which I do not believe for a second. EDIT: note the F8, F9, FA, FB etc in the first link record displayed. That is the classic I2CS result when the I2CS protocol is not followed. For other device types the commands have returned those values so the event trace clearly shows it to be an I2CS device. This is the first SwitchLinc I have seen with I2CS. It did not return the invalid data as other I2CS types do but did write the invalid data. That is why they say mismatch.
Brian H Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I have seen the same thing LeeG. Looking at the Device Link Table results. They count from FF back by 1 for each entry. I have seen this with some of my I2CS devices when I was using an older version of the ISY firmware. I believe it kept peeking and poking until it hit the 00 in the link record. I have also seen this with my Beta I2CS I/OLinc. I2CS does not like peeks and pokes. Maybe possible when the 2476S was added. The device was not identified as I2CS and the I2 or I1 protocol was used to add it.
