blueman2 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Is there any way to update the firmware on Insteon devices? I am OK opening the things up and even finding test points to connect to, but I see nothing in the forums about anyone ever upgrading firmware.
LeeG Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Not possible. Devices are not manufactured to be updated and SmartLabs does not make updates available. There are a few exceptions, the SmartLinc Controller has periodic updates. Simplehomenet offers a fee based service to update their products.
Brian H Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Actually they do have a firmware programming port on the PCB but as LeeG pointed out; Smartlabs does not provide firmware updates or a programmer to do it. All of my I2CS Developers Kit modules where reprogrammed by Smartlabs from production units. Also if you are not a real careful person. You could get hurt. The power line derived logic supplies frequently have line AC on them. I know the older ApplianceLincs have the +5 volt logic power supply connected directly to the AC Line Input.
blueman2 Posted April 1, 2012 Author Posted April 1, 2012 Too bad. I am surprised this is not something that someone has created a hack for.
Brian H Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 There is some data on the programming header here. http://efundies.com/guides/ With out source files not much help. I have been using Insteon since late 2005 and we where asking for Firmware updates then. Standard reply {when Smartlabs actually responded to users input}. Company Policy. No end user firmware updates will be allowed.
gatchel Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Not being able to update firmware it one of those down sides that should have been incorporated in to the design, IMHO. In this day and age, there are not too many electronic devices that can't be updated in some way.
