ISY unable to control 2477SA1 240v Load Controller

I just installed a 2477SA1 240v load controller that shows in ISY as v.41. It shows up fine in the ISY, but any time I try to issue it a command it immediately changes status to "Could not communicate" with the exclamation point. If I query it, it immediately changes back, but the same things happens whenever issuing a command - and the command is never executed. Here is the log entry when transmitting an off command:

Sat 06/23/2012 09:32:22 AM : [ 1A C5 B1 1] ERR 1

When I originally added the module a similar thing happened - it went through most of the adding process, only to error at the end with the same ERR 1. When I clicked on write pending changes, however, it went back to normal status. I've tried to remove and readd several times with the same result. I am unable to control this unit via the ISY. The whole point in purchasing it was for ISY control of my pool circulation pump...help?!?

Thanks!!

Edit: I have tried factory resetting the 2477, it made no difference.

Edit2: I'm guessing now that this is because it didn't correctly add the PLM link when adding the module. Here's the output from the initial module add:

I've removed and readded several times now, the ERR 1 always happens in exactly the same spot. (I know above that preceding command happened to have 0 hops left, but in most cases it's still 2 like all the others.) It's almost always a four second gap at that same sequence, followed by an ERR 1, after the 3 NACK's.

I read where the Load Controller was factory reset but I suggest doing it once more in this sequence.

Delete the Load Controller from the ISY

Factory reset the Load Controller

Run the event viewer as was done before

Add the Load Controller again and post the new trace

The Load Controller is not accepting commands from the ISY PLM after the second link record (End Of List record) is written to the Load Controller. It appears the writing of the End Of List record wiped out the first link record which I2CS devices require to accept commands from a PLM. Once the PLM is no longer authorized to communicate with the Load Controller nothing will work after that.

This appears to be a device firmware issue but would like to analyze another trace after a fresh Factory Reset.

Same result... :(

Posted

The result is slightly different this time. The Load Controller rejected the attempt to write the End Of List link record this time. It accepted this same request in the first trace. However, all else after that point is the same. All commands are rejected as though the authorizing link record has been lost.

The only thing I can think to try would be to use Start Linking rather than New INSTEON Device. I don't think that will change the link records the ISY will write so I would expect the same result. The commands will be in a different sequence in the beginning which might have an effect. This is all about how the Load Control firmware is responding so it is all really guess work.

I will order a new NO Load Controller to see if all the new NO Load Controllers are doing the same thing. I have a NC Load Controller but the link record sequence is different for the NC variant and mine is pre I2CS.

If you do decide to try Start Linking please have the event viewer running and post that trace as well.

I actually did the "Start Linking" procedure earlier as well, to the same result. I'll do it again and post shortly in case there are any other clues in there that might help.

In the interim, I take it that this probably isn't going to work and after my trace I should put the old mechanical timer back in place? :(

Well, it appears like this thing may have just been defective. I was going to try manually linking it to another device, and when I went outside the attached load was off, there were no lights on the controller and it was beeping every half second or so. I tried powering it off at the breaker, doing a reset, etc., but I couldn't get it to come back to life. When I first opened it it looked as though the leads had previously been attached to something (they were already twisted,) but I just wrote it off to testing. Now I'm wondering if this was a return that didn't get properly tested...

At any rate, I guess it's time to order another one. So much for weekend projects!

Posted

I doubt it was a return.

Smarthome usually puts tested returns in the "Open Box" Clearance area.

I can see them connecting it up to test it or to write a new firmware version in it.

Start Linking did not produce the expected results. The Start Linking process should result in the PLM and the Load Controller creating a Set button link outside of the ISY. This apparently was not accomplished as the Query Insteon Engine command was still rejected. That should not have happened if the PLM and Load Controller had exchanged messages with Set button press on the Load Controller.

The rest of the sequence is as before since the Query Insteon Engine was rejected.

This is the first reported problem with the NO Load Controller so it may be a problem with that specific device. Hard to draw a good conclusion from a single device.

Well - it didn't come from Smarthome directly, it came from Amazon so I'm a little less certain what they do with returns.

At any rate, it's totally dead now, so I'm done for today lol. The replacement will be here Tuesday, so we'll see what happens! I do have a Smartlinc lying around somewhere, so I guess in a worst case if it still doesn't work I could put the schedule on that for now...

Thanks for the help, I'll be posting back on Tuesday...unless it's raining!

Well...I received the new one today, and it linked with no issues first attempt. It also behaved completely differently when doing a factory reset - the old one beeped continuously when powered on while the button was held, this one did not. The light sequence was different as well. So, I'm not sure what was up with that other one, but my problems appear to be solved. Thanks for the help!!

I just got a brand new 2477SA1, version 0.41, and it has very similar symptoms to skunkiechris's unit in terms of never being able to successfully link. It will start to link, and things will look OK in the Event log, but then it will start NACKing. I factory reset it twice and tried linking again. No such luck. If I try to query it, it will query its status correctly. But if I try to control it or link it, I get NACK errors, and it will not be remotely controlled.

Here's a capture of the last link sequence I tried:

I'm wondering if maybe I got Chris' returned unit. Probably not, as the Insteon link numbers are different.

Anyway, did anyone figure a way to get around this? Is there some double-secret sequence of button pushes and commands I could be missing? Or does this really mean the unit is bad?

PS: My temporary workaround is to give it an X10 address. That works! And since I was replacing a bad X10 switch, it's a pretty good temporary solution.

It looks very much like the other 2477 that NAKed everything after the first link record is written. I have a 2477SA1 with the v41 firmware in operation on a pump. I did use New INSTEON Device rather than Start Linking. Might try that as an alternative.

Posted

Well, the saga continues, but I think I figured out a work-around.

Anyway, I tried all of the suggestions everyone provided, and nothing helped. No amount of factory resetting, choosing "New Devices" vs "Start Linking", or anything else made any difference. I figured my unit was probably bad like skunkiechris' was. So I ordered another one on a 'cross ship' from Smart Home. The new unit arrived, and it turns out it NACKed just like the first one did. I could not link.

So I got to thinking, and read some other forums. I noticed folks talking about the i1 vs i2cs protocols, and I remembered the Advanced Options -> Insteon Messaging setting that I had never messed with. I started to change it to i1 only to see if that helped. It warned me against doing so, saying it would mess up all of my i2 devices and scenes. But I took a chance anyway and set it to i1. I could always restore from backup I figured.

Well, after doing that, and after deleting the 2477SA1 from the tree, I was able to link an 2477SA1 to the ISY running in i1 mode using "New Insteon/X10 Device". I don't know if "Start Linking" would have worked or not. But I was happy. Both of the 2477SA1s linked. So then I switched Advanced Options -> Insteon Messaging back to Automatic. I tried turning the loads on and off, and that also seemed to work. I tried turning on and off some other things and they seemed to work.

I then decided to 'reprogram'/'relink' one of the 2477SA1s while the ISY was still in automatic Insteon messaging mode by choosing "Restore Device" and "Write Updates". When I did this, I was back to the NACKs, and then the device wouldn't work again. I had to put the ISY back in i1 Only mode, delete the device from the ISY tree, and then re-add it back in.

So my gut feel is that the problem is i2cs related. The problem might be in the ISY firmware, in the 2477SA1 firmware, or a combination thereof. But it is irritating. I see the UD guys saying that i2cs has caused a lot of problems and that they're working them. Hopefully, this will be one of them and they can resolve it.

I'd appreciate any feedback from folks in-the-know if I potentially screwed anything up or slowed anything down by setting Advanced Options -> Insteon Messaging to i1 only and then setting it back to automatic. Also, I'd appreciate knowing when someone figures out what is really happening with this problem.

Thanks all

I2CS devices have dropped the Peek/Poke commands that the I1 option uses. The commands do not fail with a NAK, they just do not function so no errors but no links. The Load Controller may have turned On/Off which is strange for an I2CS device without links but I don't think the Load Controller would respond to a Scene. It gives the appearance of a device that identifies itself as an I2CS device but does not follow the rules of other I2CS devices.

The Restore Device would go back to the command sequence that New INSTEON Device uses when the default Advanced option was restored. I have no explanation.

I think I may not have been clear enough in my earlier explanation. I'll try to clarify.

When I switched the ISY to i1 mode, and then attempted to link the 2477SA1 to it, the linking was successful. I was then able to control the load from the ISY. After linking in this way, I switched the ISY back to 'Automatic mode'. I didn't try to re-link (at first). But I did try to control the load fromt he ISY in "automatic mode", and once again it was successful. I could change the load on and off, query it, and even perform a 'Query Insteon Engine'. And these commands continued to work after performing the "Query Insteon Engine" command, and they all worked without errors or NAKs. However, the Event Viewer showed that it was sending i1 commands, even though I believe the 2477SA1 is supposed to be an i2ce device.

Later, after validating everything worked, that was when I decided to try to 'relink' the device in 'Automatic Mode'. It was already working OK, but I wanted to see if relinking in Auto mode would break it. And sure enough it did. It went back to the NAK mode when loading the links, as shown in my earlier posts. So I had to delete the device, switch back to i1 mode, re-add it and re-link it, and then switch back to Automatic Mode. Then all was OK again.

It is a kludge, and it shouldn't be that way, but at least I found a way around the problem. I'm looking forward to someone figuring out whether it's a problem with the 2477SA1 or the ISY-99. Time will tell. . .

Thanks for your help!

If you want to do additional diagnostic work, run Tools | Diagnostics | Event Viewer at Level 3. Go back to the I1 Advanced option and run a Show Device Links Table followed by a Compare. Post the event trace and what is the result of the Compare. Be sure to put the Advance option back to Automatic when finished.

Hi brookbphx,

This same issue has been reported by others and the problem is that the device itself is i2cs but subsequent queries by ISY for engine version fail. As such - and as LeeG suggested - it's very important for us to see the contents of the event viewer.

Furthermore, please try right mouse click | Diagnostics | Query Insteon Engine ... if this works, then the problem is as those reported by others.

With kind regards,

Michel

If you do decide to run the event trace of a Show Device Links Table issue the Query Insteon Engine as the first thing after starting the Event Viewer at Level 3. The earlier trace shows the device did respond as an I2CS device. This Query Insteon Engine will show if the device continues to show an I2CS device.

Thanks all for the help.

So I think I understand what folks are asking for. I'll provide what I can. And as I'm sure you guys know, I already have traces for when I was first trying to link the 2477SA1 to the ISY in "Automatic" mode that failed with NAKs in earlier posts. I then programmed the devices in i1 mode, and it seemed to work.

Anyway, here are my latest test results. I performed these tests in Automatic mode, and then again in i1 mode.

First, in Automatic mode, I set up Event Viewer, and then ran "Show Device Links" and then a compare. The compare result showed 3 lines (as this device is not linked to anything but the ISY yet): The red text indicated "Identical", "Extra Record", and "Ignore". I get the feeling that means all is OK. Anyway, after that I did a "Query Insteon Engine". The following Event log shows both "Show Device Links" and "Query Insteon Engine". It's interesting that "Show Device Links used i2cs commands while Query Insteon Engine used i1. I guess that's to make sure that the device can see it. Anyway, here's the log.

Now, to follow Lee's request, I switched to i1 mode, performed a Query Insteon Engine, and then performed a Show Device Links (with a compare as well). The result was that all 32 links available were reported incorrectly, with each byte containing the lower 8 bits of its own address. That's typical on uProcs that have nothing driving the data bus when a shared address/data bus is being read. The log is as follows, although I cut it off after a few links were reported:

It's interesting that the i1 'peek's are reading invalid information here. After re-reading LeeG's earlier messages, his response is starting to make more sense to me. I think Lee believes that the device could not have programmed in i1 mode, and should not have responded to On/Off commands, because new i2cs devices do not support the i1 peek/poke commands. But based on the fact that the device really did program, as indicated by the "Show Device Links" in automatic mode quoted earlier, and really did respond to On/Off commands from the ISY, I'm guessing this 2477sa1 at least supports poke, but not peek. It seems to program with the poke, but you can't read the results back with a peek.

Lee also mentioned that the "Query Insteon Engine" command will tell you if it's an i1 or an i2 device. Since I don't have the developer's guide, can you tell me what I'm looking for in the data stream to know that?

Finally, Michel asked:

Furthermore, please try right mouse click | Diagnostics | Query Insteon Engine ... if this works, then the problem is as those reported by others.
This does work in both Automatic and i1 modes. But I'm not sure who these 'others' are that he's talking about, or what problems they reported. The only 'other' problem I've seen reported is the one in this thread from SkunkieChris that seemed to match mine. But he was able to resolve his with a new unit, while that didn't help me. I have 2 units that act the same way (will be sending 1 back). However, I figured the workaround to program it in i1 mode, and then use it in i2 mode. I'm not sure what problems I might run into, however, after adding additional controllers/scenes (which I plan to do later today). Anyway, if you can point me to the forum threads that talk about these other problems, I'd appreciate it.

And please let me know your interpretation of the results or if you think I've misinterpreted the results. All thoughts are welcome.

Thanks all!

Some of the results are expected and some are not. The first trace using Automatic issues I2CS Extended commands to read the link database which is correct. The unexpected aspect is there are link records being read successfully which also explains why the device can be controlled On/Off. These link records could not have been written using the I1 Advanced option.

The second trace using I1 Peek commands fail as expected because the internal I2CS PLM does not implement Peek/Poke. Note that Poke cannot work without a functional Peek. To write data the sequence is Peek to establish the memory low order address byte followed by a Poke with the data to be written.

Despite the earlier trace that shows a NAK using extended commands in automatic mode, at some point these commands did work. There are two link records in the Load Controller and the only possible way to get those link records is with I2CS Extended commands. At some point a device add in Automatic mode did work which leaves as an open question why does the Load Controller NAK those commands some of the time. Once the link records were created successfully they will remain unless a factory reset is done.

The first page of this topic covers a user who had the same symptom, getting NAKs. The replacement Load Controller worked.

At some point your Load Controller worked as the existence of the two link records indicates. Again, these two link records could not have been created using the I1 option. The Peek/Poke commands were “depreciated†commands as far back as the 2007 Insteon command spec. It took the conversion to the I2CS Insteon spec for the Peek/Poke commands to actually be discontinued.

To summarize

A. the Query Insteon Engine in the last Automatic trace does indicate an I2CS device

B. two link records were successfully read using I2CS extended commands

C. the two link records could not have been written using the I1 Advanced option

D. the Load Controller On/Off functions because the required link records exist

E. at some point a device add worked successfully creating the needed link records

F. why the Load Controller NAKs otherwise correct commands some of the time is an unknown

Hi LeeG,

F. why the Load Controller NAKs otherwise correct commands some of the time is an unknown

This is precisely the problem that had been reported before (not on the forum) and, at the moment, we think it's the firmware in load controller.

Thanks and with kind regards,

Michel
