Communication Problem with Togglelincs within a 3-Gang Box

Hello. I recently installed my first insteon devices. As a part of the install, I placed 3 togglelinc switches in a 3-gang box. I wired the following within the box (From left to right):

1 - A togglelinc wired as a 3-way to a togglelinc down the hall

2 - A single togglelinc to an outside house light

3 - a single togglelinc to outside pole light

Initially I was able to establish ISY communications with two of the three switches within the box. I could not get the middle switch to communicate with the ISY. I replace the switch with another one. No problems since with the new switch.

The next day the 3rd switch stopped communicating. I replaced this switch with another one. No problems since with the new switch.

Today I get up and the 1st switch won't communicate.

Other information: All 3 switches are on the same circuit. I have 3.2.6 for UI and firmware. I have a 2413S PLM and 2 access points. I verified the access points are on different legs via the 4-tap test.

Since I'm getting sick of replacing the switches I thought perhaps it was a communications issue. Unfortunately I don't understand how to troubleshoot this problem using the ISY.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you using any filters at this point? What is plugged into the same circuit as the PLM? Besides communication problems, is there any other evidence that your device has failed (smoke, LED indication, cannot locally control load)? What loads do the switches control?

Troubleshooting techniques:

a) move the plm. Take an extension cord and plug it into an outlet (on the same circuit as your switches if poosible), and the PLM into the extension cord. Does this solve your problem? If so, this suggests the electrical environment around your PLM is problemmatic.

B) if possible, create a scene that includes your problem devices. Perform a scene test. Do any fail?

c) shut off circuits in the house. If this helps, start unplugging items on that circuit until you have identified any that cause problems.

d) open an event viewer. Watch the communication events. So you see any pauses or slowing of events?

I just replaced 3 togglelincs due to them constantly locking up. They would go beyond not communicating but not controlling the local load when they locked up. Reset would get them working again but only for about a week before they lock up again. Hopefully these newer ones with a newer rev will work better. Note old ones were rev 5.9 new ones are rev 6.2.

I have several other insteon devices though out the house with no issues.

oberc - thank you for the general troubleshooting information. I have not (yet) added any filters. Nothing else is on the same circuit as the PLM.

I did move the PLM to the same circuit as the problem switch. No change. I then deleted the switch from the admin console and did a factory reset at the switch. I was able to link the switch again and it is operational. :D

What bothers me is the version number of my switches. Are the new togglelinc's really at 6.2? I just purchased a dozen of these switches from Smarthome and the version # is 5.8. Is the information available on current version #'s for these switches?

Thank you for the help!

My v5.9 togglelincs were purchased in July of this year. The v6.2 I just received this week. I just installed them today, keeping my fingers crossed that solves my issue.

Not sure were you can find any info on changes with revisions. If your Togglelincs act up again, try just resetting them via pulling the air gap for about 5 secs see if that is enough to get them working again.

I am still having a problem with the 1st switch within this 3-gng box. This Togglelinc is cross-linked to another switch down the hall. My problem is every day I lose communication with this switch. I perform a factory and most times I can link it back into the network. Once in a while I have to perform a second factory reset when it doesn't link after the first reset.

I've attached the event log (level 3) for two different attempts at linking the switch:

1st Attempt: Using "Start Linking" and holding the toggle switch up until it enters linking mode. The switch does not get added to my ISY list under the admin console. The switch address is 1D.08.2C.

It's probably a long shot diagnosing this problem from the event traces above but I'm getting sick of rewiring switches into this 3-gang box.

I appreciate any help offered. Thank you!

The Start Linking trace does not show the ToggleLinc identifying itself. Is there not a Set button on a ToggleLinc?

The New INSTEON Device trace shows device address 1D.08.2C did not respond to three attempts to send commands to the device.

LeeG - the TL set button is holding the toggle up for 10 seconds until it beeps. The 1st attempt log has the togglelinc address (1D.08.2C) in lines 2-5 but I can't interpret what the lines mean.

I'm trying to determine if the switch is 'bad' or something else is going on.

Thanks for the help!

Using New INSTEON Device the commands the PLM is sending to the ToggleLinc are not getting any response. Either a comm problem to that location, a wiring issue with the ToggleLinc or a bad ToggleLinc. Simply way to eliminate wiring and comm question is to connect ToggleLinc to an appliance cord (plug on one end, bare wires on the other), plugging the appliance cord into the PLM plug point.

The Set button is below the toggle.
