I'm pretty confidant that range just isn't the issue. All 3 motion sensors are in the same room with the PLM/ISY and a dualband keypadlinc. Could it be RF over saturation? I guess I could pull the batteries on 2 of the 3 motion sensors and/or move the PLM/ISY 50 feet away down to the garage and see what kind of difference that makes? Does that seem like the thing to do? LOL...I could put little tin foil hats on the motion sensors!!!...LOL.

Thank you Lee. 1 of the motion sensors is 8" from the 2413S that is attached to the ISY. It's a dual band unit. There is also a dual band keypadlinc not 6 feet away. I just can't imagine that range to a dual band unit is the issue. There are no scenes....all on/off light switching is done with programs in the ISY (at this point). Is there anything else I can look for? Or any other ideas? Unreliable RF....I'll have to ponder and see what I can do. I have 3ea. dual band units all within 10 feet of the sensors. And an insteon phase jumper installed at the main breaker box in the garage. All insteon devices are less than 1 month old.

Gee....I have 3 that do this: Walk into the room....triggering the sensor.....it flashes about 20 times in a row. Batteries are all new, and all sensors are brand new - less than a month old. All sensors - Jumper 5 set to all software control. All sensors are accessible and respond to the ISY just fine. Just why do they flash so blasted much?

As a quite dedicated iSheep, I look forward to Apple producing a large screen TV set that completely and forever eliminates 5 Remote Syndrome, as well as also consolidating the home automation world with a GUI that is easy to use and intuitive. As opposed to the current state of the home automation world which is fractured and messed up. Witness ye the mess that has been created by the cable/TV industry where they can't even see fit to co-operate on IR codes.

2nd that notion...would be nice if it could auto backup and attach the backup to an email and send it somewhere. Since the ISY can already do an email it seems better than having to code up an ftp scenario or the like. Just a simple check box...do a backup or not. Then we make a program within the ISY to name the time and date to do the backup and send the email. Ideally, the ISY would ship with a backup program in place, similar to the factory query program. The backup program would, of course, be disabled until you set an email addy for it to send to. Minimize the coding required - don't bother with a cron scenario built into the ISY. The basic components are already there. Email and a scheduler. Maybe the default could be to backup on the SD card. Then we change it to an email attachment.

Thanks Guys. I'll look at the tips provided and work on my programming. Yeah, the email timings looked according to plan. Apostalaski - No...I don't mind the extra emails, I can always delete the lines. What I'm actually doing is using my bedroom light and emails as a test ground while I learn isy programming and work with behavior of insteon products. In actual practice it seems like most of these programming concepts will apply to just about any real world scenario. There is a great write up over in the wiki about motion sensing bathroom lights so I'll back and re-read that too. Thx.

I have a 2842-2 motion sensor that sends extra on commands when the light is already on. So something is awry in my logic? Sensor is set to 1 minute delay. ISY adds 4 minutes, and that part works fine. It's just the extra on commands I'd like to get rid of. Sometimes I use a 2 layer approach. I put in something that is very reliable and easy to understand. This might cost some good $ too. And then lay on top of that an automated control thing of some sort. Or remote access control....or whatever, for my own convenience and geek factor. From 5,000 miles away it just may be a whole lot more effective to say.... "Just push the blue button, honey." And with Insteon's color button change kits and custom button engraving I bet you could come up with a dedicated 8 button controller that would make sense and be very easy to use. Replacement of the 8button keypadlinc is another story though. Just make sure that the buttonpad is not your only source of control.

Hi Vistolin One thing I try to remember is: Don't actually automate in an overly sophisticated manner if that's not really necessary or desirable. We have a washer/dryer cubby with a light above the washer/dryer. There are folding bi-fold doors in front of the washer dryer. Every time....and I mean EVERY time the bi-fold doors open I want the light to come on. There is no such thing as a very bright day when I wouldn't want the light to come on. So....I put in a leviton occupancy sensor that has a manually operated button on the front of it for just in case I need the light on when I'm repairing the washer/dryer. Now, the light comes on and off in a completely automated fashion yet there is zero programming and zero computer and zero knowledge involved. And any local electrician can understand and replace the leviton switch. There is value in not needing a fellow geek to understand what's going on. Don't scrimp either. A leviton occupancy sensor that uses ultrasonic as well as IR in the same device is not cheap. Around $80.00 if not more. You continue to enjoy the convenience of automation long after the cost has worn off.

I see these fans listed as devices in my ISY. I have a bad humidity problem and want to put in the 80CFM fan in a bathroom. I've read the Broan blurb about "intellisense" and I don't think I really want the Broan concept. I will most likely have 2 of these fans, but they prolly won't be linked together in any intelligent fashion via Broan lingo (so to speak....). I am not concerned with overall house ventilation requirements and tying the 2 fans together. I just need humidity removal from a bathroom. So it looks like there is really just an Insteon control running the fan. Does/can it respond to humidity? Could I turn the fan on/off with the ISY using a timeslot as the deciding factor? Kinda looks like these are my 2 best choices: 1: Turn the fan on for an hour starting at 10:PM - turn it off at 11PM. 2: Turn the fan on/off with humidity, in an on demand fashion. Is this doable by using the ISY as a controller? Looks to me like the Broan eco-system does not use humidity as a deciding factor - just CFM and square footage of your house, coupled with run times. I guess the 2 fans can chat which I don't really think I'm interested in. Anyone have these fans and how have they worked out and is it a true insteon control and is humidity a factor ? Are there advantages to BroanSpeak that I am not seeing? And if there are any kool options and setups one can do in the ISY when these fans are integrated with the ISY could someone please post a screenshot of what these things are? Are we just talking basic on/off control...or does the ISY fully interact using Broan lingo? Maybe I completely misunderstand BroanSpeak and it actually does do what I need in the way of basic humidity removal from a bathroom? Thx.

None yet....but I'm really liking the idea of zigbee and looking at other devices and wondering how they fit into the overall scheme of things. Whether or not they are POE, whether or not they have RJ45 network jacks as opposed to archaic serial connections of yesteryear on them and just how it all fits together in the UDI scheme of things. Thx for your time.

I'm looking to have generic zigbee gateway functionality as part of an ISY unit. Seems like an advantage to me if there is simply 1 less wall wart to provide an ac outlet for. Why power a seperate gateway when there is a device right here with an ethernet jack on it and it's already hooked to the ethernet. Just have the Generic zigbee device join the same PAN ID as the brultech and thermostat...and send on out somewhere. I don't care for vendor lockin. You can probibly see how little I understand about zigbee. Wish there were more materials explaining it abit more in terms of the what I currently have for hardware...which I admit I cannot play with because my brultech is out to have zigbee installed and I have no RSC thermostat yet. But if UDI will only provide zigbee for it's own drivered devices and partners then that's what we live with. UDI has the best thing going.

I have much to learn in this zigbee arena. So.... a Wonderful Generic Zigbee Home Automation Device cannot have it's packets routed out onto the greater TCP/IP network...over to The Great Zigbee Processing Center In The Cloud even if the device is a member of the PAN ID and all other settings are correct. I can work with that Thanks.

My Brultech is off getting zigbeed and I do not have an RCS thermostat yet so I can't try this stuff out. Will the ISY act as a zigbee access point and conduct zigbee communications/relay for any zigbee device within range - or is it limited to just the ECM1240/Greeneye/RCS thermostat? And will it act as a zigbee gateway and forward packets on to the greater TCP/IP network ? I have seen a specialized zigbee gateway but I was wanting the ISY to do that functionality so I could avoid yet another wart. I wish all these devices would get some POE.

When the ISY gets it's power from the insteon PLM.....just what kind of power is the PLM supplying? Is the supplied power adherent to the 802.3af standard? Is the insteon wart supplying 5VDC, same as the wart supplies? It looks like the ISY box runs from 5Volts when using the wart. Here's my vote to have the next hardware revision use POE according to the 803.2af standard...48VDC, up to 15 watts. Or 803.2at (POE+) if necessary. And through the Ethernet port too....not the other serial port that connects to the PLM.

I see constructs like below in many many programs. Almost all I think. What is the strategy - why test to see if something is both on and off at the same time? Evidently, things can happen that present both conditions near simultaneously? Program X-10 D4 Status If X10 'D4/On (3)' is Received And X10 'D4/Off (11)' is not Received

I think my logic is faulty. I need to actually test for the coffeepot being turned off instead of assuming that if it's not on, then it must be off. Is that a better way to go? After all, the coffeepot could be simply not reachable for any reason, yet still be turned on or off.

Thx Xanthros. I'll be reusing this program and it's logic for many things it looks like. This is what I've got..... If the coffeepot is on.... Then set the var to 1. Init the var to 1. (setting status of a var does not also init the var? initialization doesn't happen when you put something into a var?) Just let this program stand alone and $hadJuice will always contain the state of AC power to the coffeepot? Then as a test procedure....unplug the coffeepot....plug it back in and the coffeepot should turn back on...right?

Testing for a "NOT OFF" condition is a nice trick when one is using dimmers, where you want to test for a condition where the device can be at any level greater than zero. For relays such as appliancelincs, where there are only two conditions ON and OFF, I would expect that you could use: and status of coffee pot is on Okay, got it, thx.
