Weatherbug Module Question

So how does the climate module get the weather info? Doesn't is just get it from our backyard weatherbug site? If so it should be working.

Thanks wrj0,

But, who are "various weather forum sites"?

How can we help?

With kind regards,

Michel

Nate is mainly talking about http://www.wxforum.net/ I'm a member. Weatherbug has a terrible rep on that site when compared to all the other web server site (ie. weather underground).

If you have any questions just post on the backyard community. The guy Ross on the backyard community gets the weather info from weatherlinkIP (software that is purchased for the Davis weather stations) and posts to weatherbug. If you asked he could easily send you the apk info thus bypassing weatherbug for our HA systems. This would be an easy way around weatherbug.

I'm curious, are there alternatives to Weatherbug for data sources? Yahoo? The weather channel?

I realize it would take some time and work to modify the climate module but would it be something worth looking into?

Hi Ken,

Please note that the issue is not related to all Weather stations but those that are in the backyard reporting to WeatherBug.

There are always alternatives for everything. The main question is development/testing/regression testing times and the benefits.

With kind regards,

Michel

I just returned from a weeks vacation to find 1/4 acre of young plants almost dead and a greenhouse full of seedlings we have been growing since January fried as with the weatherbug data unavailable my ISY ET module did not run. My programs were set to run when the irrigation requirement was > 1/4" which would have been almost every day with the heatwave and winds in N California right now but unfortunately with weatherbug down the requirement sat at 0 all week and my plants had no water.

Sure would be nice to have some support for our Oregon Scientific weather stations directly available in ISY or at least an option to use wunderground which isn't great but is WAY more reliable than the notoriously unstable weatherbug backyard system.

I think some programming to account for no change in data would be in order as well. One could look at the temperature and if it does not change in 6 hours or 12 hours, then suspect the data is not coming, or even have the program set a variable when it does get a good data download.

Then if you get no change in that value for some wait period, you can get a notification or tell the system to go to a manual water cycle.

I don't see UD providing support for our personal weather stations since we (people with back yard stations) are a small percentage of their customer base and since we all use different types of weather stations. I bet they continue to use weatherbug even though it has issues. Frankly, I don't blame them as their time is limited and they have bigger fish to fry.

For something so important you could have notifications sent to your phone. I get a notification every time my sprinklers run. And on days they don't run I get a notification telling me they didn't run. For something very important like in your case you could then run them manually from your phone if you get the notification that they didn't run.

Hi markarmer,

I am so very sorry to hear. I do agree that there should always be other safeguards for something so important.

jmed999 is semi correct: supporting different weather stations is an extremely huge task. Of course, we would certainly entertain it if there's more demand.

There was a suggestion that if we could transcribe our personal stations data into weatherbug format, that perhaps just a simple re-pointing to where the data came from would not be such a major undertaking for UDI.

Once could conceivably, just cause a static route that was going off to weatherbug to instead go to your own server and the ISY would be no the wiser.

Weatherbug seems to have their Backyard server back on line. WB data for my station has been available for the past few hours and is now being pulled successfully by the ISY.
