KPL - FanLinc Question

Hi all,

New ISY/Insteon user here and I'm a bit stumped. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have an 8 button KPL and a FanLinc, programmed through an ISY. I have a button on the KPL (E) set to toggle through the fan modes. If the fan is off and I hit E it goes to high, if the fan is on high it goes to medium, medium to low, low to off.

All is working well, but I'd like the KPL button to be lit when the fan is on, and off when the fan is off. Is there any way to do this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Define an ISY Scene with KPL button E as Responder. In the Programs that are cycling through the Fan Motor speeds, for all but the Program that turns the Fan Motor Off, turn the Scene On that has button E as Responder. That will turn the KPL button LED On. The Program that turns the Fan Motor Off should turn the Scene Off to insure the button LED is Off when the Fan Motor is Off.

It does not matter as far as the Scene turning the button LED On. It will affect what your Programs are looking for as far as a Trigger condition but does not matter as far as turning the button LED on. You could set the button to non-toggle On mode so the button LED will be On as a result of pressing the button. Then the Program that turns the Fan Motor Off would turn the button Scene Off to turn the button LED Off.

It seems for some reason that my IPY cannot turn the KPL buttons on or off on that KPL. Not sure what's wrong, already factory reset the KPL...

Post the Program and describe the ISY Scene that has the KPL button as a Responder.

After a Factory Reset a Restore Device on the KPL must be done to rebuild the link database.

If

(

Control Kitchen 8-Button E is switched On

or Control Kitchen 8-Button E is switched Off

)

And Status 'Family Room / Family Room Fan-Motor' is Low

Then

Set Scene 'Set KPLs / Set Kit 8 E On' Off

Set 'Family Room / Family Room Fan-Motor' Off

Else no action.

Set Kit 8 E On just has one responder, the E button on the KPL.

Program works fine. It thinks it's turning the Set Kit 8 E On scene to off, and it thinks the button turns off. But the button stays on. For some reason on that KPL, the scenes do not activate and inactivate the button LEDs.

Okay, only the A button on that 8-button KPL seems to respond appropriately to commands from the ISY. The rest it is not seeing properly (i.e. I can't directly control them from the ISY). I've tried a factory reset, but that didn't work.

Posted

Insteon Direct commands CANNOT turn Secondary KPL buttons On/Off because Insteon Direct commands have no means of identifying which KPL button. When a KPL receives a Direct On/Off command it assumes the Primary Load Control button is being acted upon.

Move the Set Scene 'xxxx' Off after the statement that turns the Fan Motor Off. Also add a 2 second Wait before the Set Scene 'xxxx' Off. I suspect the KPL is still processing the button press when the Scene Off is issued.

So even when I manually (i.e. from the ISY) turn on or off the scene that just consists of the KPL button as a responder, the KPL button's status does not change.

Is that normal? It has persisted through a factory reset, so I assume it is. Though if the scene won't change the status of the button, I'm not sure I follow how the program works. Unless a program acting to activate a scene is different from highlighting the scene in ISY and clicking "on" or "off". It must be, I suppose.

I will try the delay and see how that works.

Are you doing a Restore Device after doing a Factory Reset?

The Factory Reset is erasing the very link records needed for the Scene to work.

Right click the Scene name, select Diagnostics | Scene Test. This will product an event trace. Post the event trace.

Turning the Scene On/Off should turn the KPL button LED On/Off unless there is a comm problem with Scenes to that KPL or the Factory Reset activity has not been cleaned up with a Restore Device. I suggest staying away from the Factory Reset for now.

Okay, please forgive me if I'm not posting this right. Here's what I get. The "failed" seems problematic.

There are ten devices in that Scene which seems strange for a Scene that represents KPL button E.

Also as noted device 22 95 84 5 did not respond.

I hate to keep asking this question but it is very important. Has a Restore Device been done for the KPL since the last Factory Reset?

Posted

I deleted the keypad from the ISY. I deleted all the scenes and programs that it was in. Then I reset it and recreated all the scenes and programs. I will try a restore device and see if that helps.

Thanks.

After the restore, it still has the same list (which I assume represents the ten devices), but now succeeds. So that seems good. Thanks for the tip.

Note that the PLM physically has many more devices in that Scene than the ISY knows about. Each device the ISY is aware of is displayed as failed or succeeded. Don't know how the configuration has reached this point but I suggest doing a Restore Modem (PLM) to clean up the PLM link database as well.

If you really want to get fancy you can add separate scene for each fan speed and adjust the single keypad button brightness for each fan speed.

I believe that KPL buttons can not be adjusted individually. The On/Off LED brightness levels apply to all buttons on the KPL.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on LED brightness? For me, 0 is brighter than 1, but 2 is also brighter than one. So that's not intuitive.

Much thanks.

P.S. The restore devices and restore the PLM was awesome. Now I can do all sorts of trick stuff. Thanks.

Unfortunately SmartLabs does not publish (at least publicly) what the various values produce. There is always a minimum separation so some of the combinations do not mean anything.

Start with 0/7, 0/8, 0/9, 0/10, 0/11 .... to 0/15. Off/On values

Then with 1/8, 1/9, 1/10, 1/11 .... to 1/15.

Then 2/9, 2/10, 2/11 .... to 2/15

Then 3/10, 3/11, ... to 3/15

and so on.

This is from memory of tests run more than a year ago. With the Relay variant setting a single backlight On % I'm guessing the Dimmer will follow eventually.
