IOLinc Issue

I've got an IO Linc setup with a magnetic sensor for controlling my garage door. When the door is closed the LED on the IO Linc is green and when the door is open the LED is off. However according to my ISY the SENSOR status never changes. Any ideas?

Most likely issue is poor comm with the I/O Linc location. Move the I/O Linc to the PLM plug point and test the Sensor there by using a jumper between GND and Sensor to turn the Sensor On/Off. If the status changes look into comm in the garage. If the status does not change at the PLM plug point either the link records in the I/O Linc or the PLM have been lost.

A Show Device Links Table and Compare will verify if the I/O Linc link records are intact. The easiest approach with the PLM is to do a Restore Modem (PLM) to rebuild the PLM link database.

Do other devices show state change? If no device shows a state change then look at the AV such as Kaspersky, Avast, and AVG.

Did you do a restore PLM after the factory reset? Have you tried a restore device on the IOLinc?

Have you tried LeeG's recommendation to test the IOLinc at the PLM location? If not, I think that is your best next move. From here on in, you should have the event viewer running at level 3 during your testing so we can have visibility to the communications between your PLM and the IOLinc.

Open up the event viewer, set it to level 3 and cycle the IOLinc input a few times. Post the resulting trace.

I haven't tried LeeG's suggestion yet. I will shortly. In the meantime I copied the log (and I'll copy a new one once I can move the IOLinc close to the PLM):

There is poor and changing reliability in communication with the I/O Linc location. The Hops Left=x count should be stabile and Hops Left=0 is as poor as communication can get and still have an effect.

Look into what is being used to couple the two 120v legs. Do they pass the 4 tap Set button test?

What is on the I/O Linc circuit? Noisy CFL or florescent lighting. Distance from PLM location to I/O Linc location.

Aside from the obvious comm issues, it looked to me like the IOLinc Sensor IS responding. I see:

Are these not the sensor status messages?

I have to wonder if the OP is looking at relay status and not the sensor status.

I've got several dual band devices (2 fan lincs and 2 dimmer switches) as well as 2 of the dual band access points (2443) plugged into separate 120V legs.

The IOLinc had been working for awhile. I am not sure when it started to act this way. It is plugged in up by the garage door opener. I have no fluorescent lights in the garage at all. My garage opener, lights, and kitchen lights are all on that same breaker. In terms of physical location, the iolinc is 15-20 ft away from the PLM.

What is the 4 tap Set button test?

Posted

The 4 tap Set button test is described in the Access Point User Guide. It is the test that is used to verify the Access Points are actually plugged into opposite 120v legs.

I have no way of knowing what comm. was like before but at present comm. is very poor.

Moving the I/O Linc to the PLM plug point will confirm the link records that support the I/O Linc Sensor are correct.

Posted

I know that the access points are opposite legs. I used those to allow everything to communicate before I got any dual band devices

I moved the IOLinc next to the PLM and jump the sensor. The LED went green but the status on the ISY did not change. I also ran the event viewer again.

Communications look perfect with the IOLinc at the PLM location. It still looks to me like the sensor is responding. Are you looking at the relay node of the IOLinc or the Sensor Node ?

The event log shows changes in the iolinc not changes on the sensor. When I was testing the sensor with the jumper I was watching the Current State of the sensor and did not see any change despite the led changing.

Posted

Sorry. I assumed that node 2 was the sensor. Must be the relay.

Right Click the sensor node in and select Diagnostics/Show Device Links Table. When the display is complete, click compare. Post results.

The link database in the I/O Linc is emply according to the last post. The Sensor cannot report state changes without the necessary links. A Show ISY Links Table for the I/O Linc will display what the ISY thinks should be in the I/O Linc. With the poor comm the ISY might not have been able to rewrite the link database in the I/O Linc.

Since a Restore Device did not work, Delete the I/O Linc and add it back to the ISY. It is possible this will not work with the comm the way it is. It the I/O Linc adds successfully run the Show Device Links Table again.

What is the ISY firmware level?

To see the Sensor state change messages in the event trace it is necessary to connect/disconnect the Gnd/Sensor connection.

Posted

I ran the Links Table for the IOLinc and it was empty. Since the IOLinc is close the PLM right now I tried restoring the device again. I rechecked the Links Table and it was still empty.

I will try the removal and reinstall of the IOlinc.

Firmware version is: 3.2.6

I did not confirm on my devices, but I believe you make sure a given device is out of all scenes and folders. Once out, right-click on that device and remove from ISY.

Factory restore the device, then add back to ISY. My favorite method is to put ISY into linking mode (add insteon device) then put the to-be-added device into linking mode. This should create a new entry in your "my lighting" tree.

Posted
I removed the device and relinked it and that worked. Thanks for help. Hope this doesn't happen frequently.

I've been on the ISY for almost 5 years now and have never encountered that behavior and while I do see reports of lost link records here now and then it does not seem to be a common problem.
