jesry Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Just upgraded to iOS 7.1 on iPad 4. Orchestrated Mobilinc voice is too attenuated to be understood, as well as other applications e.g. Line 2. Full reboot solves the problem until Mobilinc voice is turned on, at which time the problem reoccurs. Any suggestions? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
InsteonNut Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Hi jesry, We haven't seen anything like this on 7.1 from our multiple test iOS devices. What is the volume of the iPad set to after turning Voice Control on? Wes
jesry Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 The volume shows as 100%. Siri volume is okay, but all other apps seem affected. The problem goes away when Voice Control is turned off. It doesn't seem to matter whether Background Listening is enabled or disabled. The problem did not exist on IOS 7.0.x. Jack
InsteonNut Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Hi Jack, Try turning the volume down to 50%. We're looking into it, but so far it's not reproducible on iOS 7.1 for all our iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iPad Mini). Wes
jesry Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Hi Wes, No change, unfortunately. I had Orch Mobilinc installed when I upgraded to 7.1. Is this a case you tested? Maybe I need to uninstall and reinstall. Jack
jesry Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Wes, Uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, same result. The problem seems to be associated with the listen in background function. If it is disabled, other apps work normally, except for Mobilinc which is pretty much inaudible in either case. Not fatal, but disappointing. Some day when I have the time I'll do a full restore from backup. Jack
elvisimprsntr Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 No problems here with iOS 7.1 and MLHD 4.0.2 on iPhone 5
CTBigman Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I just installed voice on my iPad mini and I am having the same problems with volume
InsteonNut Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Hi CTBigman, Can you try another app like Skype and see if your iPad shows the same reduced volume? What's happening is MobiLinc is asking iOS to use the mic in a Voice Over IP scenario so that MobiLinc can still play sounds. iOS in turn auto-reduces the volume output to give priority to the mic. Otherwise you are blasting system sounds/music/etc right back into the mic. We can't change or modify this behavior. It seems that the iPad 4 greatly reduces the volume, while other iOS device are less so. Wes
jesry Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 Wes, does that mean that if I disable sounds in Mobilinc, that I won't have the problem? What about using a BT headset? Jack
Xathros Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Better have a damn good battery in the headset as ML will keep the mic open and the radio active 100% of the time. -Xathros
InsteonNut Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Hi Jack, No, this is a function of iOS telling the speaker hardware what to do. Disabling sounds in MobiLinc won't have any effect on iOS behavior with the mic. At least not currently. This is something we'll have to look at. It may be possible to use another mic only mode in iOS IF you don't want MobiLinc to also play sounds. Wes
jesry Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 Well, my headset is supposed be good for 7 hours talk time. I don't pretend to understand how the audio works on the iPad, but it seems like you can prioritize the use of the microphone and speaker. For example, Siri does not seem to be muted when Mobilinc voice is running. My VoIP app, Line2, is unusable when ML Voice is on. It seems to me like a phone app should be able to grab the audio resources when it is the focus, and keep them when it is in the background with an active call, as it does normally. Also, I don't understand why audio is degraded when ML is in the background, Voice is on, but background listening is off. it's a bit ugly, but maybe ML needs a push-to-talk feature. Jack
InsteonNut Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Hi Jack, Yes, there are MANY factors at play here. When making a phone call for example, the system will override any app running for the mic. However, if there are other apps that want the mic, but MobiLinc is using it (or another app is using the mic) then there will likely be resource contention. Just to be clear, the low audio levels appears to be limited to certain iOS device models and isn't a common issue across all iOS devices which will make finding a common solution difficult. For example, the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad 2 all work as expected under 7.0 and 7.1. Plus it appears that this issue popped up with iOS 7.1 leading us to believe that the change in 7.1 was intentional for these models or accidentally affected only these models. We do see this issue on our 7.1 iPad Mini, but only appeared after upgrading it to 7.1. 7.0 on the iPad Mini didn't have the issue. We're still investigating this, but at this point it appears to be a bug in 7.1. Wes
jesry Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 Quite possibly 7.1 caused. As I said earlier, it worked fine until the upgrade. Jack
InsteonNut Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Excellent! Glad our workaround worked for you, Jack. Wes
