I recently noticed I haven't been getting my email notifications and tried to figure out the issue but was unsuccessful. I originally had a gmail smtp setup that worked for years, but just decided to stop. I pulled up the configuration tab and double checked the addresses and passwords, but when I sent a test an error box came up with "Mail server DNS error". I decided to try configuring using a Hotmail address but was faced with the same error message.

 

Any idea on how I can remedy this?

 

Just fyi-i am still using the 99I, I have the 994, but haven't had a chance to install it.

It seems that ISY is not able to resolve DNS names to IPs. If you have configured your ISY with a static IP address, you might want to consider reverting to DHCP.

After switching back to DHCP I get "Mail server failure" when trying to TEST and email.

 

Any other ideas?

Perhaps your ISP has changed their requirements affecting your setup. Rogers.com, in Canada, changed their port from 25 and every time I used it they sent me an email with some violation of security title and a link to their advertising page. duh! I read rumours they won't even pass data on port 25 to anywhere now.

 

My new ISP demands a null password or the SMTP server just ignores the request. That one threw me for a loop in this day and age.

I set up my router to assign a permanent IP address to my ISY and other devices in a manual assignment (DHCP) table, inside the router. That way they are all static addresses I can depend on.

 

Your router has to know what address your ISY is otherwise it can assign the IP number to another device and you could have duplicate addresses on your LAN. Then things don't work again.

When setting a static address, make sure the address that you choose is outside of the router's DHCP pool. Many routers use 192.168.1.1 - 254 and have from 192.168.1.100-150 as the DHCP pool. Use an address like 192.168.1.10 for the ISY as long as that is not already assigned elsewhere. Also, you might consider setting your DNS in the ISY to 8.8.8.8 (Google's public DNS). This has proven quite reliable for me on my ISY.
