Problems With Hidden Door Sensor

A friend loaned me a 2443 to test in my situation. Recall, if you will, that I have two access points installed in the house. Both the house and my garage are fed through the same elecrical meter. I want to add an access point in the garage to strengthen the signal there. Step-wise, how do I add this third access point?

Plug it in (really, thats all)

Try using one of your working Access Points as a test.

I am not certain what you mean.

I have done the 4-tap on each of the in-house access points and one of those does nothing for the one in the garage. The other makes the one the garage start flashing red. If I reverse the process and 4-tap the one in the garage I get flashing red on one of the access points in the house. If I simply plug in the access point in the garage its LED does not light.

Flashing red indicates that both access points are communicating (that's good), but that they are not on opposite legs of the split, single-phase electric supply. That doesn't matter as long as you have at least one pair of dual-band devices correctly located (as indicated by the 4-tap test). That one Access Point doesn't respond means that those two devices are not communicating at all. That's also OK if the previous condition is met. Additional Access Points extend the range of the INSTEON signal.

The reason for my suggestion was that I read, "I plugged it in and the LED does not light." to mean that there was no LED illumination ever. But, something is not right. The Access Point LED should be dimly lit as soon as it's plugged in. Is it, if you plug it in somewhere else?

Thanks for the informative feedback. I will be leaving the area for the next couple of weeks. I will get back to this as soon as I return.

I am now at the location of my second ISY. I tried linking a door sensor at this location using the following procedure:

1. Placed the Door Sensor within a foot of the PLM (2413S).

2. Link Management>Sensors>Hidden Door Sensors>Remove Existing Links

3. Pressed and held the Set Botton on the Door Sensor until it beeped and the Status LED flashed green

4. Typed in the Door Sensor ID (2C.71.9A) and its Name; clicked OK

5. Get the message "Cannot add Insteon device".

I have never struggled with any device the way I have with the door sensor! I am near giving up.

Browser: Firefox 32.0.3

Firmware: 4.2.10

Think you need to upgrade the ISY to 4.2.16 and try again.

-Xathros

Xathros is right on as usual. 4.0.5 does not know about a hidden Door Sensor. After installing 4.2.16 be sure to delete the Java information including Applications. When all updates complete run Help | About again to confirm both indicate 4.2.16.

  • Author

Both are now 4.2.16. I have no idea how 4.0.5 showed up because I had previosly linked a door sensor on my other ISY!!! Weird!

I will test linking tomorrow morning and report.

Couldn't wait. The device linked on the first try. I can't believe I didn't catch that problem. My sincere thanks to you guys.

It is a quirky little device. Red exclamation points that must be resolved. Followed by gray icons that likewise must be resolved. Definitely could benefit from improved ease of istallation/use. I am almost 70 years old now and this experience has definitely aged me more!  :  )
