Just got an email saying the Echo now supports WeMo and Hue:
 

Supported products:

• WeMo: Switch, Insight Switch, and Light Switch 

• Hue: A19, Lux, BR30, Bloom, and LightStrip lights 

 

I'd love to see support for the ISY as well!

I'll second that motion!  (or third or 100th or whatever)

 

I've been a longtime ISY fan and have integrated almost all of my house (lights, hvac, alarm, audio, etc.) to it.  I access functions now from my phone, browser, lighting and alarm keypads.  Every time I ask my echo "Alexa, play this or that music" I wish I could tell it to go push the "70's channel" button on my Insteon keypad (that runs an ISY program).

 

I see the echo as just one more (really cool) way to get to all my ISY functionality.  Of course, I can just get off my butt and push the button.  But still...

It's a good sign that Amazon recognizes and supports the Echo's home-automation potential.  It seems just a matter of time they'll open it up to HA developers and HA devices such as the ISY.

I have been contacting the support team with suggestions and ideas.  They are pretty responsive.  They even call me directly to discuss . . . which is pretty amazing . . . I have mentioned ISY to them . . . maybe I will reach out to them again. . . .

Very sad to read you didn't make the cut. Having someone on the inside who knows what the ISY membership wants in terms of integration was really key for me. [emoji22][emoji35]

 

Let's see how others fair and help shape the development of this product. I really wish UDI would have been tapped directly by Amazon to participate in this process.

It looks like there is limited IFTTT support now from the echo.  You can trigger recipes when you add things to your to-do or grocery list, or ask to have the list read.  I am going to try to see if I can turn on scenes by asking echo to read the to-do list.

 

I don't think IFTTT can do REST commands.  Any ideas how to convert an email from IFTTT into an action on the ISY?

It's convoluted, but you can have IFTTT make HTTP calls.

I host my own (fake) WordPress install, so I don't expose anything to others (for security).

IFTTT makes a call to my "fake" WordPress install, which then makes an HTTP call to my web server.

That HTTP call runs a PHP script, which makes the actual call to ISY.

 

I limit what I have exposed.  No ISY passwords are seen anywhere, except on servers I own/control.

If Echo acts as a 'trigger' with IFTTT - then you can add the CAO tag manager 'action' channel and have the tag manager on your lan issue the http REST calls to ISY.

 

I have this working with text messages to IFTTT to control a fan and misc stuff. See http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/8818-cao-sensors-support/?p=114779for the recipe.  You'll need a tag manager to do this though (http://wirelesstag.net/) and contact their support for the private IFTTT channel.

Seems like it would be easy to write code (if it doesn't exist already) that can check an email account, and when it sees certain keywords send a REST command.

 

IFTTT will send emails so this would be more straightforward than setting up a wordpress server.

The WordPress server is not a real WordPress server.   Unzip the package I pointed to, place it in a web directory, and use it.

Looks difficult to set up, especially since I don't have a webserver set up or a linux box.

 

I wonder if yahoo pipes could do this.

 

 

Looks like Huginn can do this but looks complex to set up.

ISY is designed to be standalone and thus I very much doubt we'll ever include external/cloud services support in core ISY framework. This said, with our 5.0, everything can become a virtual node in ISY including IFTTT through an ISY node server (say RPi). What we will be working on is the generic node server for ISY.

IFTTT support would certainly give us a lot of power over how we control our ISY devices.  I'm sure most of your users would appreciate this addition!

IFTTT supports so many triggers the options are nearly endless, but here's a few off the top of my head:

 

1) Turn on lights when my phone gets close to my house

2) Turn off lights when my phone gets far away

3) Arm ELK when phone gets far away

4) Use amazon echo to turn on/off scenes

5) Blink kitchen lights to convey information, like email received, stocks down, cubs win, tornado warning, incoming cell call, etc.

6) SMS to turn on/off scenes

7) Turn on TV scene when game is on

 

I'm betting there are even better ideas here on the forums.  Check out some of the homeseer recipes on their IFTTT channel, these would all be applicable to an ISY channel as well:  https://ifttt.com/recipes?channel=homeseer

Oh, and with the new IFTTT "Do" button on my apple watch I could turn lights on/off from my watch...
