Mobilinc Connect

ISY 994I, 4.2.18

Mobilinc Pro 4.1.10

iPhone 5

Whenever my internet connection goes down and restarts, I regain my wifi connection but cannot communicate to the ISY via Mobilinc Connect. In order to regain connection I have to manually unplug the router and ISY.

The most recent situation happened when my internet provider was working on the system and cut my signal. I never lost power on my cable modem, router or ISY.

Any suggestions on how to resolve the issue so that I regain Moblinc communications after a resumption of internet service?

Hi flsenior,

In the case where internet service was cut/restored did all your computers/mobile devices have successful access to the internet after the restoration? It was just the ISY that remained disconnected until you rebooted the router, modem, and ISY? If that's true, would you send us your ISY's error log (Admin Console->Tools->Error Log) and let us know what day this occurred on?

Please send to: support@mobilinc.com

Thanks flsenior,

I responded to your email. In short, on those two days, the ISY was unable to resolve DNS addresses until the network equipment was rebooted. I suggested a couple of thing to try reposted here below:

Usually using the 8.8.4.4 address resolves DNS pretty well, but there can be other factors.
- If you had to reboot the router/modem then it’s very likely that there was nothing the ISY could have done to reach out to the internet until this happened to reset the modem/router.
- Check to make sure that your internal ISY IP of xxx.xxx.xxx.111 isn’t in the middle of your router’s DHCP assignment range. If it is, you need to pick an IP address that’s outside of what the router wants to own for IP address space.
- Another option is to move the ISY back to DHCP and monitor for conditions like this.

The above issue with Mobilinc Connect was never resolved and I had been ignoring the problem.  However, I now would like to try and find a real solution and would appreciate some help.

The DNS is 8.8.4.4 and the IP address is outside the router address space.  Refering to my posting on this forum (12/17/14) I tried to do File | Disable Internet Access and could not make the change.

Today Mobilinc Connect would not communicate once again with the ISY.  All of my other home network devices are communicating with the router.  I can also access the ISY via the desktop.  I made an update to the ISY software today.  Once the web brower rebooted, I was also able to access the ISY via Mobilinc Connect.

I am not a super tech savy person so there may be something basic that I am missing.  Any help is appreciated.

Where is my issue?  (1)  Mobilinc Connect  (2) ISY - 994i Pro  (3) router - Linksys EA 4500

Thanks

Hi flsenior,

I made an update to the ISY software today.  Once the web brower rebooted, I was also able to access the ISY via Mobilinc Connect.

It sounds like MobiLinc Connect started working for you after updating the ISY's firmware to the latest release. This is a common solution. UDI has made great progress on the ISY firmware and introduced portal specific robustness since the last time this thread was addressed.

If you continue to have connection issues, and you are using a fixed IP address for your ISY, two things:

1. Your fixed IP must be outside of your router's DHCP range.

2. Please use the Google Open DNS IP of 8.8.4.4 to provide the ISY with Google DNS look-up services.

Hi Wes,

Today I lost my cable service for about 1 hour.  When the system rebooted my router and everything on my network reconnected.  However, the MobliLinc Connect does not connect from my wi-fi network or from remote locations far outside my wi-fi network.

My fixed ISY IP and the DNS are in compliance with your suggestions in the prior message.

Any further suggestions are appreciated.  I will most happy to work with you off-line if needed to further explore solutions.

Hi flsenior,

Something still isn't quite right with the setup then. This shouldn't cause the ISY to not connect to the portal.

If you've already upgraded to the latest firmware: http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/17075-release-4326-is-now-official/

then please revert the ISY back to using DHCP instead of a fixed IP address. With MobiLinc Connect/MobiLinc you don't need a fixed IP in fact, it's recommended to let the router manage the ISY's network settings in most cases.

Yesterday, 12/15/15, I lost my internet connection due to an outage from the provider.  Power to the modem, router, ISY was never lost.

I then lost all ability to use Mobilinc Connect, both via my wifi network or cell network, to reach the ISY.

I removed power from the ISY and router and then plugged in the router first, waited a few seconds and then plugged in the ISY.  After a few seconds I was then able to once again use Mobilinc Connect.

I have followed your last suggestion above.

ISY configureation is on the current firmware, Auto DHCP and UPnP are both checked.  My router is a Linksys EA4500.  It is setup to Auto Config DHCP, MAC Address enabled, and DHCP server enabled.

Any ideas on why I can't automatically reconnect via Moblilinc once the internet is interrupted?

Hi flsenior,

It sounds like when the internet went out and came back it's possible that you were assigned different IP or DNS addresses for your router to use. Depending on how flexible the router is, it's very possible that the router was unable to reconfigure itself after the internet connection was restored which is why a power cycle of the router then the ISY worked to get everything back into alignment.

Maybe I am missing something, but mobilinc connect will not work if the ISY does not have access to the internet. If you have an otage, WiFi and cellular will not be enough if your ISY is isolated from the internet.

When was the internet restored? Is it possible that your rebooting of the ISY was coincidental with restoration of your internet connection?

After restoration of internet service following an outage, how long have you waited before concluding mobilinc does not automatically reconnect? Seconds? minutes? Hours? More? I am wondering aloud how long it takes mobilinc to find an ISY after such an outage.

Re: InsteonNut reply --  Your comment about the router is beyond my skill set of knowledge.  I don't know how to check my router for "flexibility".  In my prior message I did list those internet settings that have been established on the router.  Please feel free to ask questions about any other item that I may have missed on the router setup.

My home wifi network has Tivo, Wifi extenders, Nest Cameras, iPhones, iPads, Yamaha sound processor and a wireless printer attached.  All of those devices will reconnect after an internet outage. Before I unplugged the router and ISY(as explained in the prior message) I checked to see if I could access the ISY and internet via my desktop.  No issues.

Re:  Oberkc reply --  I am referencing using Mobilinc Connect after the internet service has been restored.  As noted in my reply to InsteonNut (see top of this message), I had checked the internet connection via my desktop and was able to access both the ISY and the internet before I unplugged power to the router and ISY.  I have waited hours/days/weeks to reconnect via Mobilinc.  Sometimes in the past I have lost Mobilinc access when away on vacation and had to wait to restore it once I returned home which was the reason for waiting days/weeks.

Given that all of my other home devices reconnect with the router after an outage, I have been biased to belief that my issue is with my ISY or Mobilinc setup.

Any suggestions on where to explore next are appreciated.

Hello,

I can tell you personally the last few LinkSys routers offered by Cisco / Belkin are pure junk. I know this because I've used them all and unfortunately for me am tied to this terrible hardware due to the fact I have Apps linked to it.

One of the more common issues with LinkSys routers is their inability to power up gracefully or release a IP. Worst yet this stupid device will actually make up virtual devices that simply do not exist in the network.

I will offer some screen captures for those interested in seeing what a terrible development team they have.

EDIT: As you see below there are three devices. I can assure you my LG TV does not run on iOS or is a iPad Mini. My Dash Box runs a flavor of Linux and it too isn't a iPad Mini!

The last image you can clearly see this stupid device indicates a Raspberry Pi running Linux is showing up as Windows 7?!?!

I will look for the virtual device image once I find it.

I agree. Was just hoping for a simple solution.

I have a few internet cameras around the house. It seems I struggle to reconnect to some of these after momentary loss of internet. Rebooting the camera usually solves the problem. I have often wondered whether some devices that reboot faster than a router or modem can struggle with this issue.

flsenior,

All I can say (or reflect on) is that if MobiLinc can't see your ISY via MobiLinc Connect then that ISY isn't connected to us. Your solution to reboot the router and then the ISY is recommended to reset whatever was preventing the ISY from reaching us. That also says that either the router or the ISY or both was the cause of the issue. Local access to the ISY isn't a good test of whether or not the ISY can actually reach the internet. Based on your assertions that the ISY is running the latest official firmware, IP assignment is outside of DHCP range and DNS of 8.8.4.4 then I'd recommend that if you continue to have issues, contact UDI support and provide them with your ISY's error log.
