val Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Dear experts, Would appreciate your assistance with the following. When attempting to link a Schlage Connect FE469NX door lock to my ISY 994iZw (firmware v4.3.3), I'm getting an error telling that "Cannot add nodes for new Z-Wave door lock 8 (too many nodes?)". My ISY controller manages approx. 100-110 Insteon devices. I was also able to successfully link 4 Z-Wave repeaters. I do not believe I exceeded the 256-device limitation on ISY. I already tried all common troubleshooting steps like factory resetting the Z-Wave dongle and door lock. Despite all attempts, this error consistently occurs . Here is the log. Any advise will be very much appreciated Fri 06/12/2015 17:55:30 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to remove from the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:55:37 : Removing Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:55:38 : Device 5 excluded from Z-Wave network Fri 06/12/2015 17:55:54 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to add to the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:00 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 2 Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:00 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:01 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 5 Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:01 : Adding Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:02 : Exchanging data with secure Z-Wave device 6 of type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:02 : Adding secure Z-Wave device Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:15 : [ZWAVE-ADDSECURE] Error 3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:15 : Failed to include secure Z-Wave device 6 of type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:56:52 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to add to the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:04 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 2 Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:04 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:05 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 5 Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:05 : Adding Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:06 : Exchanging data with secure Z-Wave device 6 of type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:06 : Adding secure Z-Wave device Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:10 : [ZWAVE-ADD-NODE ] Z-Wave node 6 (0x06) device data differs with ISY, removing associated ISY node(s) Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:25 : Cannot get manufacturer specific data Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:42 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to remove from the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:48 : Removing Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:57:49 : Device 6 excluded from Z-Wave network Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:00 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to add to the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:03 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 2 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:03 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:03 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 5 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:03 : Adding Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:04 : Exchanging data with secure Z-Wave device 7 of type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:04 : Adding secure Z-Wave device Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:17 : [ZWAVE-ADDSECURE] Error 3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:17 : Failed to include secure Z-Wave device 7 of type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:33 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to remove from the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:44 : Removing Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:44 : Device 7 excluded from Z-Wave network Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:49 : Listening for Z-Wave devices to add to the network Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:54 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 2 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:54 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:55 : Z-Wave device detected, retrieving info 5 Fri 06/12/2015 17:58:55 : Adding Z-Wave devices stopped Fri 06/12/2015 17:59:07 : Exchanging data with secure Z-Wave device 8 of type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:59:07 : Adding secure Z-Wave device Fri 06/12/2015 17:59:07 : Adding ISY node(s) for new Z-Wave device 8 type 4.64.3 Fri 06/12/2015 17:59:07 : Adding associations for new Z-Wave door lock 8 Fri 06/12/2015 17:59:07 : Cannot add nodes for new Z-Wave door lock 8 (too many nodes?)
larryllix Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Try removing a repeater or two and link again. Perhaps the 256 count is nodes and some devices have multiple nodes.
val Posted June 13, 2015 Author Posted June 13, 2015 Try removing a repeater or two and link again. Perhaps the 256 count is nodes and some devices have multiple nodes. Thanks for the response. I already tried that with no luck. My topology report comes back with 188 entries which includes 4 Z-Wave repeaters and 185 Insteon nodes (yes, you are right, some devices like the latest On/Off Outlet, RemoteLinc, Motion Sensor have more than 1 node). I'm still able to successfully link additional Insteon devices and add new scenes, however adding a new Z-Wave device fails with the above error. I would imagine the 256-node counter is global and must be honored by ISY regardless of the type of device being added. This does not appear to be the case. This leads me to believe that there might a bug in FW 4.3.3.
Michel Kohanim Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Hi val, Please also include the scenes and folders into your count. I suspect upgrading to PRO will fix this issue (support for 1024 nodes). With kind regards, Michel
val Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Michael, Thanks for your response. I owned ISY 99i/PRO for 4 years, before upgrading to 994iZw just a couple of weeks ago. Before the upgrade, I calculated the total number of all devices and scenes, and it was below 200.Therefore, I went and purchased the standard version. I was able to successfully add a few more Insteon devices, which now stands at 190 device nodes and 34 scenes and folders. I'm still below the 256-limit. It would be impossible to return my standard 994i unit and replace it with a PRO version. I don't think Smarthome would approve this. Moreover, I haven't as yet reached the limit as far as my computations are concerned. It still seems like a firmware bug. Please advise on available support options. Thanks.
Michel Kohanim Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Hi Val, You don't have to return the unit. You can upgrade online (Help/Purchase Modules). Do you have any folders? With kind regards, Michel
val Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 yes, I do have 24 folders in total including the default built-in "My Lighting" folder $30 for a PRO upgrade is reasonable and I would absolutely love to do as soon as I go beyond the 256-device limit. It has been a pleasure using ISY in the last 4 years. You will never loose me as a customer. Just help fix this bloody computational bug
Michel Kohanim Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Hi Val, Thank you. 190 + 34 (scenes) + 24 (folders) = 252. Node is anything that has an icon on your device tree to the left. ISY's max is 255. So, upgrading to pro will fix it. With kind regards, Michel
val Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Apologies if my earlier message was not clear. It said "... stands at 190 device nodes and 34 scenes and folders". There are 24 folders and 10 scenes. That's 224 in total. Still below 255. I should still be able to use your product within the limits imposed by the standard version. I do not want to assume that your advertised limits are inaccurate and ultimately misleading.
Michel Kohanim Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Val, Please go to Tools | Generate Topology and send it to support@universal-devices.com. With kind regards, Michel
val Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Although the issue I'm facing with has as yet not been resolved, the support I'm receiving from UDI is first-class. Thanks, guys! You are Rock Stars!
Michel Kohanim Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Hi val, Thank you. Just for the benefit of others: if you have a Z-Wave device with regular firmware, ISY goes to Safe Mode and thus any type of node addition fails. I upgraded Val's ISY to the one that supports Zigbee/Z-Wave and we were able to get the lock included. With kind regards, Michel
val Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Appreciate you summarizing the root cause, Michel. The problem has been fully resolved by using the proper version of the firmware. I can now temporarily relocate the ISY unit without taking the whole PLM dependency with it. Putting ISY next to a Z-Wave door lock is a pre-req for a successful link. Most repeaters cannot re-translate secure communication. Folks like me are essentially forced to take ISY out of its normal location and place it next (literately) to the lock. This what I was doing and Safe Mode was not well understood. It would have been nice to log a message that says "Cannot add nodes for new xxxxxx (too many nodes or running in safe mode?)" Thanks again for the excellent support.

If so, you never mentioned that you changed the system before you tried to add. A note to everyone; it's important to state all changes when you ask for help. If val had done so his issue would solved with one reply.

If val had done so his issue would solved with one reply. ISY worked absolutely fine on the previous firmware version when linking a Z-Wave device with PLM disconnected. Therefore, I omitted this detail as being insignificant in my opinion. Also, the warning message that pops up and talks about "Safe mode" does not make any references, either implicit or explicit, to limitations affecting the Z-Wave module. It was hard to correlate the absence of the Insteon PLM and issues with Z-Wave device linking. Car radio is supposed to continue working when A/C is off.

larryllix Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Usually people asking for help are doing so because they don't even know what questions to ask.
smokegrub Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Usually people asking for help are doing so because they don't even know what questions to ask. Spot on.
G W Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Usually people asking for help are doing so because they don't even know what questions to ask.Of course. But how many times do you see a problem question asked and it turns out the problem was caused by a change and the question fails to note that change?
larryllix Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Of course. But how many times do you see a problem question asked and it turns out the problem was caused by a change and the question fails to note that change? Sure enough, but I didn't understand your retort because you apparently didn't know all the parameters I needed to make me understand your point until we bantered . Yeah it is definitely an art reading between the lines.
