Fibaro FGK-101 Door/Window Sensor plus Temp

My second attempt at getting a sensor going kind of works but I need help.

 

I bought a Fibaro FGK-101 door/window sensor because it had the ability to add an external DS18B20 temperature sensor option.  I want to monitor the internal temperature of my freezer as well as door open/close.  I wired up a DS18B20 sensor and ran it inside the freezer.  When I add the z-wave device to the ISY network, I only get a binary sensor which does seem to handle the open/close.  I don't seem to get any temperature functionality.  I've rewired the DS18B20 and I've factory reset the FGK-101 sensor twice.

 

Any ideas?  Is this something that will also work under ver 5?  I'm 0 for 2 on the z-wave sensors I bought to work with my new ISY994.

Don't know if its currently supported, but it *may* be a multi-channel device. No multi-channel devices are currently supported.

 

It's been reported that the next beta drop of 5.0.x may have multi-channel.

Does ISY support this model? Is the correct model shown at the top of the page on the device's page?

Is your DSB1820 a three wire device and not a parasitic device?

 

This is probably my problem -- how do I know if a device is supported?  I've made the assumption that if it is z-wave it will be supported unless there are some oddities with a device manufacturer's implementation that may not be typical.

 

It is a three wire DS18B20.

 

Looks like this is a multi-channel device as MWareman noted.

 

From the manual:  

"The Door/Window Sensor is a multichannel device. This means that it is equipped with an independent input circuit and a 1-wire bus allowing it to be connected to a DS18B20 temperature sensor. As a result, each device is represented by an independent icon in the System."  (this is under the section of using using it with their System so that is what it is referring to when it says icons)

Ok.  I'll keep an eye out for the next beta.

OMG I can't believe someone has finally made a wireless 1 wire sensor that isn't a kludge! What is the going price for this Z-Wave module?

 

This may very well push me over the edge in the future for a Z-Wave enabled 994 controller! I have a few places around my home that could use this most excellent solution.

 

I am not fond of batteries as the long term costs and faults are ever present. But in this case I can set that aside and use high capacity rechargeable lithium cells which will sooth this issue.

 

What is the best place to obtain this sensor at the cheapest price?

I just bought it off of Amazon here for $49.99.  I'm trying to use it for the freezer temperature monitoring and door open/close.  If I can can figure out my doorbell, this would also fit inside the doorbell case and maybe trigger something.  Those are the two ideas I'm playing with.

Since you first presented this device a quick Google search showed some great related threads and reviews of the device. That led me to their other device which is the Universal Binary Sensor which is even better!

 

This thing is so freaking small and also supports 4 1 Wire sensors!

 

I believe this is the route I am going to take as it will offer much better value along with the ability to power it from many wider VDC sources.

 

At $50.XX USD that's almost $66.50 Canadian, so if I am going to spend that kind of cash might as well get more 1 wire sensor support.

 

Please do keep us in the loop as to how you progress and when the 994 supports multi channel what the results are. My plans are to use this universal binary module for a fail over project to monitor a few none mission critical devices and zones in the home.

 

Thank you again for bringing this great product to my attention. I am unsure why this device(s) never come up when a 1 wire search is performed?

Fibaro seems to be doing interesting things.  Fibaro has an doorbell/intercom/camera/lock coming out that could be interesting if they allow 3rd party interaction with it.  It's a 4k camera and can act as an interface to unlock the door.  They also have announced this gesture tablet/system that you can mount under a table or behind a wall to make the surface a gesture zone that you can trigger z-wave things off of.

Still a decent way to get analogue anything into ISY.

The unit I am discussing is the Universal Binary Sensor which supports 4 1 wire sensors at a time. I've included the PDF manual to the device in question and you can see in the wiring schematic it does offer four 1 wire support to be wired together.

The discussion was for the Door/Window sensor http://www.fibaro.com/files/instrukcje/eng/DoorWindowSensor%20FGK-101-107%20ENG_v21-v23.pdf which only supports one (connected) of four different temperature sensors. Check your quoted link. :)

I am with you. I have been avoiding Zwave as much as possible, so far. This may change my mind unless Insteon comes out with something similar, and soon. They better move their butts or I am going to get moving away.

Deadband  control, forced report time, and fixed time cycle reporting of temperatures. The first tow parameters can override the fixed time too. Somebody at Fibaro knows their stuff!  Even a heartbeat!

No problem being off topic.  I'm curious too since I'm a newbie.  What type of application would people use it for?  I guess what would people hook to it?

I currently have a very large 1 wire network in place already. My (future) plans is to use the universal binary sensor device to extend my network into other areas of the home and property where running wires isn't practical or safe. I won't have to worry about lightning or line power being an issue for these now.

 

Given my intent is to power them via a few very large amp hour UPS batteries and in one instance the other will be left on a battery tender trickle charger for that ultimate long term use.

 

I already monitor many appliances, rooms, floors, zones in my home.

I use the data to graph trends and have many programs to offer alerts, insight, or to react to conditions based on my needs.

Knowing the extreme temperatures in both hot and cold has allowed me to fine tune my HA to react to the environment in a real time and logical manner. Gone are the days of set it and forget it now its about *Just in time* use and the best use of the energy in my home to meet those energy targets and comfort levels.

 

As you can see in this graph it was freaking cold but if you look at the interior temp of the garage it was 26-29'C difference from the actual outside temp!

Knowing the real time temperatures again allows me to control the HVAC elements in my home for the best balance of comfort and energy targets. This is a graph of the outside temperature vs the furnace run time.

Oh . . .

 

Me likes, now what kind of accuracy are we talking about here for temperature? The major failing of all of these none (Dallas) 1 Wire sensors is the lack of accuracy or operating in a extreme temperature range.

 

For me there are many devices that simply do not operate in what I consider *Normal* expected temperatures. Meaning there is no good reason it can't function, operate, and measure from -40'C to 150'C.

 

Dallas 1 Wire sensors offer this and depending upon the maker will offer resolution down to 0.1 to 0.5'C.

As you already know about, people want to get temperatures from every room or every aspect of their heating system with a bunch of these in parallel on one cable. The price is tickling and the Fibaro unit is calling my name....

5.0.3 alpha was released (multi-channel support) and I've upgraded and added the Fibaro FGK-101 back into the z-wave network.  Yeah!

 

I now see two devices as I believe I should; one that is the door open/close sensor, and two, one that is the temperature sensor I have wired to it.

 

The only strange thing is that my temperature sensor is showing a temperature of -1342213.26 Celsius.  I have an awesome freezer, but not that awesome.   :mrgreen:

1. Are you indeed looking for Celsius?

2. If not, have you set the global temp settings to English (Configuration tab)?

I was wondering that myself -- I do prefer Fahrenheit.  Now that you pointed me to it, it looks like my "Preferred Measurement System" under Configuration-System is set to USCS (United States).

 

I wonder if I may have the external DS18B20 (one wire sensor) wired wrong to my Fibaro.   In the manual for the Fibaro I don't see any parameter that sets the celsius/fahrenheit setting.

Ok, I've got metric set and I rebooted.  The temp screen is blank now.  I assume it hasn't received a temperature yet from the sensor but the manual says it should every 4 minutes (it's on a battery).

 

I tried to look at the log (which I did look at last night) but am now getting an error.  Tools - > Log gives me this error:  

Couldn't Open the Excel Macro C:\Users\CHRIST~1\AppData\Local\Temp\UDReport.txt

 

I know I looked at the log last night because I attached the clip of it to a previous message about the temp.  I'll try to find a way to get the sensor to send the data (assuming it isn't doing it already and just not showing up on the isy screen).

Ok, I have it working.  I had a loose wire and I have chosen kind of a bad location for the sensor (on the bottom edge of the door, signal strength isn't the best I may move it).  Anyway, I have it functioning.  It now reports the correct temperature in Celsius.  It doesn't seem to matter if I have 'metric' chosen or 'USCS' under Configuration - > System, it always shows the temperature in Celsius.  (I'm rebooting each time I change from or to metric/uscs.)

 

I solved the LOG problem -- my bad, I had excel open with the previous log I was looking at.  Closed Excel, then it worked.  (Too many monitors!)
