Today marks my 1-week anniversary as a new ISY 994i owner which I purchased to replace my soon-to-be-bricked-by-Nest Revolv hub. I enjoyed the Revolv's ease of setup and use to control our modest Insteon-centric HA system. When I purchased it, the Revolv hub promised wide ranging support of numerous standards and included software upgradeable radios to enable future expansion. I was impressed by it's overall reliability, integration with IFTTT, and geofencing that just worked. The Revolv hub and iOS app did not offer more advanced features and programming, but it met most of my needs.

Most of you reading this already know the Revolv story and recent announcements, so I'll leave it at that. In weighing my options to replace my Revolv, my minimum requirements included features that would meet or exceed the functionality of my Revolv:

  • Comprehensive Insteon support
  • Mac OS X & iOS support (HomeKit not required due to current HomeKit issues)
  • Geofencing
  • IFTTT support
  • Push notifications
  • Optional expansion to support other standards (Z-Wave, Zigbee)
  • Simple setup & ease of use but capable of more advanced features & programmability

One of my other main requirements was that the manufacturer and/or device was established with a large user base due to my experience as a Revolv owner.

Based on my requirements and after a lot of research, the ISY 994i appeared to be the best fit. Upon receiving my ISY 994i/Insteon 2413S bundle I was able to quickly and easily get up and running. There was a bit of a learning curve, but the online documentation on the Wiki and information contained in these forums, as well as UDI's incredibly quick, responsive, and helpful online support (thanks Michel ;)!) got me up to speed and helped me resolve a couple of minor issues which were self-inflicted (purchased Portal Module + Mobilinc module).

Using the ISY has been an epiphany and breath of fresh air. I was able to do a remote firmware update without issues, and I was able to quickly equal then exceed all of the previous functionality of my Revolv including rock solid geofencing (Mobilinc Pro + IFTTT on my iPhone, Mobilinc Pro + Locative on the wife's iPhone) and push notifications using Pushover and integration of my LaMetric.

I can't express how satisfied I am with my ISY and UDI and only regret that I didn't purchase one sooner The constant updates, improvements, support, and expansion including the Portal give me great confidence that I'll get a lot out of my investment for *many* years to come.

Thanks for taking time to write up your story. The ISY is a very capable device and UDI is unique in their close contact and support of their users.

Welcome to the forums!

Welcome bvag.

You are correct in that you now have a capable controller with many many features present and more added all the time.

You met Michel, so you already know what an involved in enter/ceo he is. The only thing left is to settle in, let everybody get to know you, and welcome to UDI forum!

Thanks @paulbates & @Guitartexan01. I'm encouraged as well by this healthy, active user community here.

FYI If you're a current Revolv owner/user who will be SOL on 5/15/2016, feel free to shoot me a PM for some worthwhile info.

Welcome to the ISY world @bgav!

It's truly sad that they are simply shutting it down - no refunds or recourse at all - based on that fact that the 1 year warranty is over for all purchasers... Wow is all I have to say.

While not a Revolv user myself it does show why a cloud-only (or even cloud-first) product should be avoided at all costs if you want to maintain the (significant) investment that home automation takes.

Interesting thought Michael. I wonder the pendulum will swing UDI's way, at least a little, especially from this group of users? Two way IFTTT via the portal sweetens the pot for them.

Thanks @MWareman!

2-way IFTTT through the Portal was a huge selling point for me. Right now I'm using it with the IFTTT weather channel to control scenes based on weather as well as the Maker channel for geofencing. If IFTTT weather doesn't work out, I'll consider the Climate Module. I don't mind paying the $ for the Portal, especially if it means support for more and more features including Amazon Echo devices. I could foresee integrating an Echo Dot or two down the road.

Patiently waiting for my lametric time. Would love to see your example code for integrating with ISY.

Here's one for getting notified on my LaMetric when an Insteon exterior motion detector detects motion:

Program:

LaMetric.Front.Motion - [iD 002B][Parent 0001]

If
        Control 'Motion.Front-Sensor' is switched On

Then
        Resource 'LaMetric.Front.Motion'
        Wait  20 seconds

Else
   - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action')

Network Resource (LaMetric.Front.Motion):

POST /trigger/LaMetricFrontMotion/with/key/[your_key_here] HTTP/1.1
