larryllix Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 I have this new android 6.0 tablet and have been experimenting with Chrome and FireFox on it. Browsing this forum is really a let-down with these browsers as there are so many features missing. When posting the whole icon bar above the text box is missing. This where the font size, colour, style, quote tool, program tools, attachments and many more tools are just MIA. Also, android has no mouse hover with a touch screen or mouse cursor. Many website forums have answered how to do this by holding down the mouse button or holding and swiping off to one side etc.. Doesn't do anything but expose links information. Wrong! Obviously these people have never seen a Windows mouse hover withh all the wonderful handy tools to PM, view their posting stats, location, slogans they have installed, etc.. With this browser I could be posting in some micro font as it overrides everything online ot one font. Just in general this PC has a lot of features mssing and I realised how spoiled we are with Windows. Not bad for a smal 4" screen but really lacking for a desktop PC.
Teken Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Not sure what brand of Android tablet you have and flavor OS Google is shelling out these days. But your personal experience does mirror my own and have to say being forced to use almost every iteration of their stupid alphabet OS has been maddening. To think a multi billion dollar company let some moron use the alphabet and then name things after deserts and random crap just boggles the mind. The only saving grace of this OS is the so called open source nature of this silly thing. Regardless, the benefit of Googles Android platform out weighs the cons - one of which has been to force Crapple to do better. If it wasn't Microshaft it was Apple - If it wasn't Boogle it was Crapple. With the advent of Samsung trying their hand in various OS platforms its no wonder the public's eyes are glazing over! I never thought I would live long enough to ever see a phone be infected by a virus. To think tens of billions of Android phones are just roving bots waiting to explode on to the Internetz is quite sad.

elvisimprsntr Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Android is a platform to track your movement and behavior to serve you ads. Windows 10 has moved in that direction. Android "openness" comes with a price. Google makes billions serving ads. Apple makes billions selling hardware and a closed OS which is aimed to protect users and their privacy. I prefer the latter given the type and amount of personal information stored on these devices. Each person will make their own choice and have to live with the consequences.

Well said and agree completely with this view. For me I try to take the best parts of the systems / services offered by the various companies. As much as I bitch and complain about Google on so many fronts they have also offered the general public many products and services no other has. Their integration of Google Sheets is quite stellar and for me I use it knowing their prying eyes are always omni present. Knowing this from the onset I use their services for none mission critical and none personal matters which in the big picture has zero impact on my personal life. In the last few years weather tracking has really interested me and how it impacts my energy consumption. With the aid of IFTTT and Googles most awesome storage drive I am able to record and track various weather patterns. Being able to literally see and recall historic data of how many sunny days were present in my location and compare that to my solar PV generation has been most excellent. Knowing how much snow fell during the course of the winter and being able to compare it to previous years has also been fantastic. Other great services from Google is of course their email services. To have the ability to connect various third party services to theirs is very much the glue that binds lots of disparate services and hardware platforms I have scattered in my home. Regardless of all the awesomeness Google and the rest provide - I always keep mindful of the privacy, security, and personal invasion so many of these companies have with the United States Government. My personal mantra has been to use what works and throw away the rest . . .
larryllix Posted June 29, 2016 Author Posted June 29, 2016 We are all paranoid about the information and control Google can have over us, but when you are lost in the forest, without any food or water, and don't know where you are, just remember this... Dang!... No signal!
lilyoyo1 Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 What's snow? Lol. I told you before Teken, you need to get out of that cold climate. Lol
Teken Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 What's snow? Lol. I told you before Teken, you need to get out of that cold climate. Lol I know but extreme humidity as it was in Houston, Alabama seriously just killed me. I can handle the dry heat from places like AZ, and their like but if you add just a little bit of humidity I'll just be a complete bear! Nothing is worse than feeling sticky, and changing out ten pairs of underwear because its so blasted humid.
elvisimprsntr Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 California...best of both worlds Except California you have no water, mudslides when it does rain which often pollutes the coastal waters, fires, earthquakes, high taxes, and full of liberals who live off the system. I could not help positing this gem about android. http://www.techrepublic.com/article/hummingbad-malware-infects-10-million-android-devices-millions-more-at-risk/

MWareman Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I could not help positing this gem about android. http://www.techrepublic.com/article/hummingbad-malware-infects-10-million-android-devices-millions-more-at-risk/ I went to a private information security event a few weeks ago. Most attendees said they only ever select Nexus Android devices - as over the last two years they have had the least zero day exploits out of all mobile platforms. They are now also getting monthly patches, supported by a bug bounty to encourage responsible disclosure. Samsung Android devices are the worst, followed by IOS. At the time I attended, we discussed over 200 currently active IOS exploits. Over 250 against Samsung Android and about 120 against Nexus Android. Most IOS zero-days never get published (Apples bug bounty contains a clause to prevent publication). If you think that IOS is more secure than Android (before its been modified by vendors) then your kidding yourself. Either way - rooting (or jailbreaking) makes your device *much* more vulnerable. All the cool exploits these days are against the baseband - and these work no matter the OS. There is a reason that the Cryptophone (by GSMK) and the Blackphone (by Silent Circle) are both based on Android AOSP. By the way, for a pentester the Cryptophone is *very* cool. Think wireshark for mobile networks. Michael.

I'll be in Saigon all of August and my only thought will be, "Why did I come here knowing the heat and humidity?" I jest, but the heat and rain are enough to kill this white boy from Oklahoma.
