Countdown timer from thermostat

Hi there,

The Venstar thermostats have the ability to remind you when it is time to clean your furnace filters. You can set this to any time period you want (ex. monthly). It would be great if the ISY could pick up this event from the thermostat, as then I could program the ISY to email me an alert.

Cheers!

I just replaced my filter and reset the filter count on the thermostat, and then prepared a new program to send me an email to remind me :) I just have to remember to reset the program when I change the filter...

I see. So you wrote a program that had a Wait 30 days line?

No, intead I used 999 hours since last run... 999 hours is the most amount possible by ISY as far as I can see, and there is no option for days... I use two cycles of 999 hours, which is 83 days. My filters are 90 day filters, this will give me 10 days to change the filter upon receipt of notice....

Thanks Burak,

That's very clever. The "since last run" gets around the problem of power outages interrupting any kind of very long time count (I can't imagine that my house would go 90 days without some kind of flicker in the power).

This became an interest of mine when my installer was adding the Venstar thermostat, and pointed out that our electronic air filters were supposed to be cleaned monthly. I couldn't really remember ever doing that, and we have been in our house for 7 years!

Cheers!

I am 99.63% sure last run time gets reset when power is lost to the ISY so the filter check will still not be accurate if you lose power.

This is a case where the ability to create and store to variables would be very handy! In fact, then you could actually check run time on the furnace and change the filter after so many hours of actual run time.

Someday soon...if we continue to pray to the UDI gods we will have this most awesome feature!

I think you are right about power loss. And I definetely agree with you about the variables. There is a flash card in there right? :)

Hi All,

This would be a wonderful addition but I am certain the current API does not support this event. Furthermore, I have not heard of any imminent plans for the support of this feature.

With kind regards,

It would be even greater if smarthome would send that informaiton from the thermostat. We really don't get much for our $99.00, do we.

I too was like to have access to the filter change event in the Venstar.

Is there a better TStat that will either work with either my Elk or ISY-99i or iPhone that would allow better access to programming, events, and such?

Hello elvisimprsntr,

The newer firmware on thermostat adapters has the capability of sending heat call, cool call, fan state, and temperature to clients. We should be able to support these features in 2.7.7 release.

We are working on an ELK module with more integration with ISY.

With kind regards,

Michel

How does one update the firmware in the venstar tstat insteon adapter?

or are you refering to the ISY firmware?

Hi again,

Apologies for the lack of clarity: I was referring to the thermostat firmware. The thermostat adapter is not field upgradeable so it would require a replacement.

Unfortunately, I didn't see filter change timer event in the list of new features for the 2.0 Insteon TStat Adapter.

I tried the time since last run method described above, but the max 999 hours for time since last run and the fact the time since last run gets cleared upon power loss, makes the program unreliable.

Since there is no direct link to the actual tstat filter event and it's a pure time driven event, if it would be better to program the Elk M1 in my case to send out an email and create a task to clear an event flag once I actually clean the filter. Also would work for my fridge water filter as well. I have noticed that the stupid red warning light in my fridge for when it's time to change the water filter also gets reset upon a power loss. Even if Elk M1 variables are also in RAM, at least it's on a battery backup which should minimize problems due to momentary power loss or brown outs.

I'll save that programming after an evening at my local pub. That's when I do my best Elk/ISY programming.

Thanks

Hi Elvis,

LOL ... hope you had a good time at the pub.

I think this is quite an important feature especially for a) conservation of energy (filters make a huge difference) and B) diagnostics. I am going to send this post to SH. We can only hope!

It was a lot easier than I thought to program my Elk to count number of days, send me an email when it's time to clean my air filter and replace my water filter, and create a tasks to clear the respective counters. But then I only had 6 pints in me.
