Can you buy a google home yet?

I read an article (from a not-so-reputable-looking site) that claimed google will have contractual language prohibiting any company who has created an Echo integration from participating in the google home ecosystem...  I expect that from Apple, but not from da google.

Doubt that from Google..

I wonder if that means Alexa could then have Google Assistant Skill..

:D  I'm imagining the possible snarkiness that might be evident whenever Alexa is asked to call upon Google for assistance...

Posted

The other night I asked Alexa, "What is Google Home".  She answered "Google Home is a voice-enabled wireless speaker developed by Google, announced on May 18, 2016, at Google I/O."

I was expecting something snarky and funny instead of a "real" answer.

Well, got my "Home" today and managed to pull it off via IFTTT integration, just make a recipe "IF Google Assistant" (make a phrase you want like "turn ON Kitchen lights") and "THEN MAKER" - use URL for the IFTTT integration for ISY portal to turn on the scene. You'll need to add each specific command you want "Home" to understand.

If you bought just the NR you don't need the portal and could use direct REST commands. Saves you $$

I don't have a Google Home device but I did buy a Pixel XL and have also successfully setup "Open Garage" and "Close Garage" with Google Assistant via IFTTT and ISY portal. I choose to use the portal since it simplifies the Maker request and doesn't require opening up ports at home.

Yeah, to get a direct REST to ISY I'll need 3 things:

1) Assign ISY a real SSL certificate (which is easy)

2) Save my ISY username/password on IFTTT site as a part on an URL for Maker to access (which I don't really like, it's cleartext out there)

3) Expose my ISY's HTTPS port to the outside (not sure if I like it). If IFTTT would expose the list of IPs they are coming from - I can probably allow these only.

OR

come up with my own reverse proxy for maker to access ISY directly (instead of the portal) (this is probably the best solution in terms of security and expense)

P.S.

Loaded a 2048 bit SSL certificate to the ISY - man, it takes like 5 seconds for it to respond via SSL! (5.0.4)

Hi xKing,

Another method is to use ISY Portal.

With kind regards,

Michel

Yeah, that's what I'm doing right now :)

If I don't want to pay for ISY Portal - I'd just throw a python script to my own existing web server that would accept Maker's requests and relay them to ISY over the LAN.

I had the same sentiments, but broke down and tried the Portal. Works extremely well, and may teach you a few lessons about how to make it work smoothly.

Even though I detest subscription fees, I recommend to try it for the first two years while you work on it.

I too am ready to pay to use the ISY Portal, but maybe I am missing something.  My SY does not have access to the Portal now. I am not even sure I am in the right place or asking the right question at this point;  but the choices I saw when I went to https://my.isy.io/index.htm all seemed to be related to Amazon Echo.  What did you select?  Or more generally how did you get ISY Portal setup to start?

Thanks in advance.

I assume you have the Portal installed by your comments but if not

Admin Console | Help | Purchase modules.

You must have an amazon.com account for the Echo registered to a valid US address with proper ZIP code. If you are not in the US you may need to have a virgin computer with no google ID installed. I found it constantly grabbed my google info, and the app is not available to outside US residents. Once all accounts with google, registered outside the US, are disabled, and removed from the computer, then the app may become available. Sideloads for the app are available, but be cautious with Version 2 adverts as they are just phishing hoaxes to lure you into giving personal information.

Then follow the wiki link above, although I found it very confusing, as account references never state which one is being discussed. A few different accounts are involved.

First I want to say thanks for your prompt replies.  But I can see that I did not clearly state the exact nature of my problem.  I do not have an Amazon Echo, I am using Google Home.  I thought that someone had been able to use Google Home with the ISY Portal.  I do not have the portal now but when I tried to get it the only choices I saw were related to Amazon Echo.  So I guess that is really my question; is that what I use or some other choice?  Thanks again.

Sure, for now (until Google releases API for the Home) - just link it to IFTTT and use IF "Google Assistant" THEN "Maker" make a web request applet, there is how to use ISY Portal with IFTTT Maker https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY_Portal_IFTTT_Integration

Man you are quick.  That's what it seemed like I should do, but just wanted to make sure. I have been looking at the IFTTT and seems pretty straight forward on that end.  I have made a pretty sizable investment in Insteon devices over the years and would love to be able use them with Google Home right NOW.  Thanks again.

I'd love to have some advice on how work the IFTTT with Google Home.

In the ISY Portal, I selected SELECT TOOL ---]  CONNECTIVITY ---]  IFTTT ---] DEVICE  ---]  Created an EVENT NAME  "MBRFan"  ---]  MY DEVICE "MBR Fan (ZW058_1)"   ---]  ON

Then I copied the url to the right of the red x ,

Then went to my IFTTT web page  ---]   NEW APPLET  ---]   For IF chose Google Assistant    ----]  Chose SAY A SIMPLE PHRASE  ---]  For WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY / chose "OK Google, Fan On"   ---}

For THAT chose MAKER  ---]  In URL pasted the URL from ISY Portal  ----} METHOD : POST

Closed the window and then clicked on FINISH

I have done this 4 times but Google (Google Home and on Iphone App)  does not recognize the "OK Google, Fan On"

Any help will be highly appreciated
