MPG Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I was setting up a new M1 system with my ISY and had it working through the XEP/Elk Module (thanks Rccoleman), but after moving the box I went to plug it back in and there was an electrical crackling noise followed by a burning smell. I quickly unplugged and re-seated connections, but now when I switch on, the power light comes on but not the status light, and the board doesn't seem to be functioning. Keypad says lost comm and I can't get anything to connect. Does anyone have any ideas? I can't see any visible damage but the board is clearly not working. Elk doesn't offer tech support to end users and I bought it from a non-technical 3rd party Amzn seller.
apostolakisl Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Once the magic smoke escapes, tech support can't put it back in. I'm pretty sure you just need to buy a new main board. It is possible that someone who really knows what they are doing can repair the board (assuming the burned out parts are off the shelf stuff). But if that someone isn't you or your best bud doing it for free, probably won't be cheaper than buying new.
Brian H Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 That does not sound good. I would check all the wiring that may have changed in the move. For things like incorrect or damaged wiring. Before installing a new or repaired board or it too could be damaged. At power up. You may want to also ask in the Security Systems Section of Cocoontech. There are professional and knowledgeable end users with ELK Systems. http://cocoontech.com/forums/
midrar Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 While you probably don't want to hear this, Elk offers a replace program for around $200 where you send your board in and they send you a replacement.

If my board were fried, I would actually be pleased to hear that. I would have assumed I was buying a brand new one. Good info. Hopefully I'll never need it!
