Teken Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 I intended to post this when the news broke but totally forgot to do so: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ring-m-a-amazon-com/amazon-buys-startup-ring-in-1-billion-deal-to-run-your-home-security-idUSKCN1GB2VG As predicted, 2018 and moving forward will be a period where the giants of the tech industry will be gobbling up smaller companies. Apple has been doing this quietly for the last four years at a feverish pace. My hopes are these companies will actually do something with the companies and tech to make it better and more polished. I've been interested in a smart door bell for a while but there hasn't been anything that offers everything I consider *Must Have*. Much of the smart door bell products on the market these days are either truly ugly, lack basic features, or simply offer lots of bells and whistles that really don't make it better. There are quite a few commercial intercom door bells on the market but these too are either super expensive for what features you get. Or worst offer no features but are super expensive and ugly in shape, form, and style. Lets see what happens to Ring in the hands of Amazon . . .
elvisimprsntr Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Strange bedfellows since it was Amazon that pulled the former failed Ring product (Doorbot) from their site.
JimMc Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 Amazon probably bought them for their IP, a patent or a unique code base, rather than the hardware designs.

Well, if we are just spit balling these are some of the key features any smart door bell should have. It should come as no surprise as to some of my answers and requests. - Power: Device should offer multi power connectivity either through POE, 24 VAC, 3~12 VDC, Battery. - Communications: Local first vs Cloud First, Smart Application, Embedded Web Page. - Connectivity: Support WiFi, Ethernet, POE, BLE. - FOV & Optics: Offer different viewing angles for use case, get away from the freaking *Fish Eye* view, true night and day optics, ability to select different FPS, IPS, resolution 320, 480, 720, 1080, 4K etc. Support all video and imaging formats MP4 etc. - HIgh Speed & Image Capture: Offer a pro model which allows high speed shutter modes. The lay person normally references the phrase *License Capture*. But this requires a whole host of other supporting technology to be able to capture high speed, fast motion, low light, high light, face and license plate data. - High IP: Offer commercial / enterprise casing that can sustain high impact, extreme climate, and doesn't rust. Obviously the internal electronics would be all weather rated for extreme heat and cold. Much more but gots to go . . .
kohai Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 I have a DoorBird from Germany. It works well and has local communication.
