Have controllers button be in same state as responder

I am just setting up my ISY system, so my apologizes for the easy questions. I have started to set up scenes and after several trial and error, i am starting to get how to link the buttons and making scenes (baby steps!). I have two on/off switches that control the same hallway light with one of those switches having the Load.  I made a scene called Hallway with the switch that controls the Load act as responder and the other switch acting as the controller.  When i hit the responder to be on, the responder obviously shows in the on state,  but the controller shows in an Off State.

When i hit the controller to be On, the responder and controller will be in an On State, and both in an off state when I hit the controller off.

 

My question is how can I show the controller to be in an On State when i hit the responder to be on?

Just want to make sure - you are linking within the ISY admin console - and not by manipulating the switches button directly, right?

The manual that comes with the switches should be ignored when it comes to linking...

I was going to start a fresh topic, however …. this describes exactly what I am working with (so why duplicate).  I have just added the first of many multiway switches to the ISY994.  Like zg825, I have two switches that control a single light -- so a 3-way.  When these switches were installed, I knew it would be several days before I would get around to defining them to the ISY, so I linked them using the switches button (they are ToggleLinc switches) and this allows either switch to physically control the light.   Per installation instructions, only one switch is attached to the load (I treat this as MASTER) and the other is capped (I treat this as SLAVE).

Now, I have added both switches to the ISY using the admin console and created a scene that contains both switches.  Currently, MASTER is defined as a controller and SLAVE as a responder.  However, it looks as if (from above) that I should define both as controllers … am I correct?

Why would I not want the switches physically linked so that either can control the light?  In other words, how does the switch not connected to load know to turn the light on when this switch is physically activated?  Thus if, for example, I have to shut the ISY off (which I do when the lightening is close) … would I still be able to control the light with either switch?

You never want to link the switches to one another before adding them to the ISY.

What  you need to do is uninstall them from the ISY, do a factory reset on each switch to remove the cross links, the add them to the ISY, one at a time.

After adding to the ISY create scene and add both switches to the scene as controllers. The switches will then be in sync with one another and either switch will control the load.

Brilliant … thank you!  This actually simplifies things somewhat as we have a number of individual switches that will use an Insteon micro module and a toggle link with the micro module tied to load and wired in to provide a true neutral and true hot (instead of a switch leg).  Since the linking is done using the ISY, I can just wire these switches in and define them to the ISY without having to physically link them.  At least it sounds like that is the case … am I correct?

To add upon what Techman was saying; the ISY is unaware of any links made outside of it. This can cause undesirable effects later due to half links (when you move devices around in the ISY). These half links can slow down your system as devices continue to try to talk to other devices that may or may not be there. 

Once in the Isy, you can link all of your devices together. Personally, I recommend starting with the new 5.0.13 branch so that you can avoid potential headaches later when you update your isy in the future.

Correct. Be sure to add all the switches  to your scenes as CONTROLLERS. All the devices in your scene will then be in sync
