Help Requested! Aeotec Z-Wave DSC06106-ZWUS

Hi all,

I have a mostly Insteon Network.

I added one Z-Wave unit, the Z-Wave Smart Energy Switch by Aeon Labs Model: DSC06106-ZWUS.

I added it over a year ago, the product is now discontunied

I was about to add a second Aeotec Smart Switch 6 Model: ZW096-A02

I just plugged this second unit in and the LED was flashing so I thought it was in pairing mode.

On the ISY994i/IR Pro with Z-Wave I selected Add/Include Z-Wave Device.

It found nothing.

I then was looking at the first Z-Wave I added to see if I could figure it out.

Then I looked at if there was firmware upgrade. There was and I performed it be doing a backup. I do have my regular backups from a few days ago but not a specific Z-wave Device Backup.

After the upgrade I notice a red explanation point on that first Z-Wave Device (the DSC-06106-ZWUS.

I even held down the power button on the on the unit itself thinking I could put it in pairing mode again.

At some point the Z-Wave unit disappeared from my list of devices.

I tried to add it but its not getting added.

I don't see a flashing LED on the unit, its just a solid blue led. Its turned on and my air conditioner is what is attached to it. So it is On now.

Does anyone now how to add the Z-Wave back in?

Also was I wrong to do the upgrade and should I try and revert if that is even possible?

I'm on ISY994i 4.6.2 firmware. Z-wave is stating 21100. It also says Z-Wave version 4.55 Bootloader 1.03 Library Static Controller

Thank you!

Rob

Have you tried to remove it from the isy and then try to re-install. Are you very far from the isy?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for replying so fast.

It no longer listed as something to be able to remove?

Right now after the firmware upgraded for the Z-Wave and the -Wave went missing. I wrote the help message. I also am in the middle of running a Z-Wave Backup which says it might take 40 minutes. I only had one Z-Wave on the Network. It's about 1/3 finished. So according to the warning I shouldn't try to anything while its running.

I found on one forum that I should go to the ISY Portal to see if its listed there. I think it will be OK to do that while the Backup is running. It did not show anything.

Also, I can't seem to get the Z-Wave Device to go back to a factory reset. Shouldn't the Blue LED flash when factory reset?

Thanks! I don't want to take you anyway from your Holiday. This can wait until tomorrow if you wish!

You should exclude the Z-Wave device even if it's not listed.

Michael,

Success!

I managed to factory resetr the Z-Wave Unit, apparently it would not get factory reset if I had a LOAD attached. Once I unplugged the AC from the Z-Wave switch it go reset to factory defaults.

Then I tried to Add it, but nothing happened, then I tried the Exclude and nothing happened. I look on the forum for others having trouble and asking how long they should wait.

I then did another firmware upgrade to the Z-Wave and then a reset of the Dongle.

I then just did a RESTORE of my last Backup.

That finally showed the missing device.

I then did a Remove Failed Device on the Listimg.

I did another firmware upgrade.

And lastly I did an Add Device.

For some reason it found it this time!

Yeah!!!!

Now I'm off to trying to add the second Z-Wave Device. I think I added this device once before but don't see it so I will try a factory reset on that unit.

And if it fails at that point I will put this off until tomorrow, its almost time to take the dog for a walk (in this heat!).

Thank you so much!

Rob

PS I don't really like this Z-Wave devices, seems a lot more complicated than Insteon. But the one advantage is that they all come with Energy Usage Monitoring.

Also I should upgrade my signature. I've added more stuff and now a ton of  wifi LED stuff, Nanoleaf and Lifx Z-Strips (over priced), Beams and Tiles. I am deciding now to put them all on their own wireless router with their own SSID network.

Can two Z-Wave unit have the same Configuration Parameter? Do I need to worry about that setting.

I can see the second unit, it was added. But the issue is that its not responding to ON/OFF commands. But I can Query it and even get an Energy Usage reading.

So that tells me it can at least receive data.

This is a different model ZW096-A02 Smart Switch 6.

Its added as 3 items, a MultiLevel Switch, an On/Off Switch and the Energy Meter.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm running to dog park now.

In addition to the three nodes you have, I also have a color switch on my Smart Switch 6. Did you perform a network heal after adding the second Smart Switch? It may be a communication problem. How many Z-Wave devices do you have in your network? The more Z-Wave devices you have, the better your mesh will be which results in better communication between devices.

I bet this is a multi-channel z-wave device.  You need to be using 5.x ISY firmware to see all the functionality of multi-channel z-wave devices.  I'm pretty sure that specific device has been discussed on this forum before -- I have one I think (at least looks the same).

The model number is ZW096-A02 it is not the latest. Got them about a year ago and threw them in a draw.

I am reading that it might need a firmware upgrade but that takes a Z-Stick or some such dongle which costs $45.

Is it worth it?

There are only two Z-Wave devices on my network.

The older Aeon DSC06106-ZWUS which is discohntinued but it is working.

The newer Aeotec ZW096-A02 is not working. The label on the box says Smart Switch 6.

I have one more but it is in the box still.

I hate to say this but Insteon is easier to work with but everyone is doing Z-Wave.

A stupid Do ngle needed to do a firmware upgrade costs around $45. Is it worth getting?

Oh almost forgot.

The older z-wave device is about 3 feet from ISY

The new one with the issue is about 10 feet.

Bear in mind I can do a Query and an Event status log of the unit and it responds. So one would think the communication is fine.

Its either something with the Secure Protocol which I have set to Allow Secure devices setting which is the default I think. Or it needs that firmware upgrade.

If I am wrong please tell me how to fix.

The Heal did not work.

Also, can you use the USB port on the device to perform the firmware upgrade or do you really need that dongle?

As @kohai mentioned and reading through the forum you most likely need 5.x firmware in your ISY to make this work properly. I never tried mine on 4.x firmware, only 5.0.12 firmware.

Oh I was talking about upgrading the firmware of tbhe Z-Wave Device itself.

If it will only work on ISY 5.0 then I will wait. I think its been advised until it comes out of Beta to hold off.

I have 3 of the smartswitch 6 devices with the 5.0.12. They added just fine and work without issue. If you did an exclude then include, I would suspect that it's not supported in the 4.6.2

Holding off is the official position of UD.  However, 5.x has been in development for years (literally) and is not moving forward at a normal pace (last release was February).  If you get antsy waiting, there are quite a few people running the alpha.

Is Version 5 required to use the energy monitoring features of Aeotec or other smart switches? I would like to use the power measured by a module feeding the HVAC inside blower motor to monitor approximately how long the AC runs each day.  Thanks!
