994i is not discovering devices

Recently tried to manage one of my z-wave devices [Enlighten Z-wave+ outlet]. I have two of them, but this one would not respond. So I tried to exclude it, but when I select exclude it does not discover it. Nor does any of my z-wave devices are showing up. Just going to listen mode doesn't list any of my z-wave devices. I'm still running 4.7.3. The last two items I added were the two GE zwave outlets. I can can still control (on/off) the devices I do have defined, I just can't discover them for exclusion or any new ones. I purchased a SmartThings hub for a second z-wave hub and doesn't discover that either. Any possibility my dongle has died? DOesn't seem likely if I can still manage the other devices remotely. Any help?

The fact that you're having the same problem with a whole different controller as well as having control of other devices, lets me know there is nothing wrong with your dongle.

@frazicl,

I very much doubt it has anything to do with the dongle. Have you tried factory resetting your device?

With kind regards,
Michel

I did go back and factory reset the device. That did the trick. THanks.

Did you reset the Z-wave Dongle or the whole ISY device>   I have never been able to connect any z-wave or zigbee devices

He's referring to resetting the Zwave device not the ISY or the Zwave dongle in the ISY.

The ISY only supports either Zwave or Zigbee, not both at the same time.

The ISY Zwave dongle has an effective range of about 20 feet. if your Zwave device is located further away then you'll need to add a Zwave repeater within range of the ISY.

What model ISY do you have? Did it come with the add on Zwave module installed?

Hi  Tominnh, yes I reset everything. I was able to remove the device and add it back in, but the experience wasn't what I expected. What I mean is...

1) I selected to listen zwave devices to remove. I expected to see a complete list of my active zwave devices to choose from to delete. What I had to do was initiate the device I was trying to remove and suddenly the listener responded by removing the device. I never got a list of devices, though I know in the past I have.

2) Then to add the device, I started the listener to add devices after I'd initiated a new device. I expected to see the device in a list to choose (like I know I've seen in the past), but no list. I had to reinitiate the device, then the listener recognized and added it.

So I don't if an update changed the response I was getting or something else has happened with the 994, but at least figured out a routine that lets me remove and and devices. May this approach will work for you. If so, let me know.

Happy Trails,

Chris

THanks for clarifying. Let me be more clear. I reset the zwave device(s) with no success until I followed the steps I described in my previous response.

Maybe you or someone can tell me what I should be expecting when listening to remove a device. If I've got 4 active and working zwave devices, shouldn't the listener pick them up and list them for selection and removal?

What your expectations are has never been how the isy works nor how any controller works with zwave (zwave itself for that manner). What you experienced however is how the isy has always worked as well as other controllers and the zwave protocol itself.

No controller is aware of a device until it has been added. This is whether you are using insteon or zwave. This is how home automation protocols works mainly for security. That way no one can simply plug a controller up nearby and add your devices against your will.

In regards to removal, the same applies to zwave. To be honest, you wouldn't want a list anyway. Can you imagine having 140 devices and having to find exactly which device you want to remove in that list. It's much easier to go to the device you want and tapping a button. With Insteon, you can simply delete a device by right clicking on a device and choosing delete.

Which, having had both systems now, is about 100x easier and more practical. This “exclude” approach is just unreliable.
