Cbhob Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 So, I just installed z-wave on the ISY and paired my first device. The ISY turns on and off my fan upstairs, even using Alexa. Every communication going TO the device works fine. The ISY even updates the fan's speed (25%, 50%, 70%, etc.). However my ISY is giving me a "Cannot communicate with DEVICE. Please check your connection." error popup. When I ask Alexa to turn the fan on, she does it just fine but then gives me a "This device is not responding" message after 15 seconds. If this is a common error, I'm sorry but I couldn't find the troubleshooting documentation. Thanks
Mecheng70 Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 My house that I just sold had this happen quite a bit. IMHO I think it is related to the status updates. If you are asking Alexa to turn it on/off, that is a command that is transmitted. They error maybe related to receiving information. Maybe??
Cbhob Posted September 5, 2019 Author Posted September 5, 2019 Yeah it's like the confirmation of the change to the device isn't sent back properly to the iSY. Alexa is just repeating that symptom. The fan is turned ON everytime I ask the ISY to do it, but the iSY thinks it didn't happen.
Mecheng70 Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 I once tried to create a query command to retrieve the status of the zwave devices that didn't respond back with their status. That was a very bad idea, my isy went to a slow slug like crawl.

The ISY Zwave dongle only has an effective RF range of about 20 feet.

Thank you, based on what I am reading and the location of my ISY (basement, under stairs) I am picking up some highly rated extenders.

You may want to consider a device that repeats and is useful elsewhere. The siren was reported a very good repeater in past posts.
Cbhob Posted September 9, 2019 Author Posted September 9, 2019 Just FYI, this fixed all my problems. I have a pretty big house so as I add more items to my Zwave network, I'll move these repeaters to further ends of the house.
