New Open Standard

The March 2020 issue of MacLife has an article about a group comprised of Apple, Amazon, Google and the Zigbee Alliance getting together "to develop an open-source Smart Home standard. The goal is that "Smart Home devices will be compatible with various platforms so you can choose between Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, or other platforms."

I am curious as to your thoughts about this.

I'm not too clear as to what this group is going to propose with respect to a *Standard*?? It won't change or help any existing protocols currently on the market such as Insteon, Z-Wave, ZigBee.

They didn't give detail. However I suspect it'll be geared towards wifi based devices vs something proprietary

I'm all for standards to help unify and insure compatibility for the general public. Given ZigBee is one of the contributors perhaps this will finally get ZigBee 3.0 out!

My hope is that user friendliness is of paramount importance.

Given, the big three are involved and they have each spear headed ease of use and integration it's safe that is one of the main pillars.
