Adding August Smartlock Pro Z-Wave

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I finally got around to adding my Z-wave module to my ISY994 IR/Pro.  I updated the ISY firmware to 4.7.5 and ran the option to update my firmware on my Z wave module.  Everything looks good in the admin application for Z-wave but I haven't been successful in adding the lock.  I'm assuming I select the option to "add/include z-wave device" and then go the August app and select the option on that lock named "add to a z-wave network".  When I do this, the status just show "connecting" in the August app and the admin panel shows the listening dialogue box.  Since this is my first experience with Z-wave, I have no idea what I'm doing.  Just fumbling my way through.  What am I missing?  thanks.

I'm using 5.0.16C with the 2nd generation Z-Wave dongle and have my August deadbolt successfully connected.

1. I'm not sure if this lock is supported under ISY version 4.x. Others may need to chime-in here.

2. How close is the lock to your ISY? Do you have other Z-Wave devices connected?

ISY is in a data closet about 35 feet away with multiple walls in the way.  Basically, 3 rooms away in my house.

Way too far for the ISY to include a lock.  You will need several more repeaters and at least one that supports beaming.

If you have some Z-Wave Plus power plugs then use those.  Otherwise if you just need repeaters only that are small buy several of the Aeotec Range Extender 7 units.

Thanks, I ordered a couple of Aeotec Range Exenders and will see how that goes.

I have two buildings that use these. Without them, Zwave is basically unusable. With them it "just works". Be sure to heal the network a couple of times after installing them. Also, things seem to approve after a couple of days. I'm not a fan  of Aeotec products in general, but these little repeaters are awesome.

From my experience communication with the August lock is very unreliable even with repeaters.  The communication with the lock is far more complex than with a simple plug or switch.  There was an issue with the lock joining with the ISY, I'm not sure it has been fixed yet.  The lock is 2 devices, the lock and a contact sensor to indicate door position.  The 2 nodes were not created correctly in the ISY and added to the communication issues I was having.  I let UD know about the problem so it may be fixed already.  I stopped trying to connect it directly to ISY as the connection was so unreliable.

I now use a dedicated Hubitat located very close to the lock and connect Hubitat via the portal.  This has proven to be pretty reliable but not perfect.  Occasionally the lock status in Habitat and the lock do not agree.  There were zwave issues with the August lock by their own admission.  August lock support finally downgraded the software in my lock to a version that was more stable but I suspect still not perfect.  The version I'm running is "undefined-1.59.0-1.8.15".  I also tried IFTTT but there was an issue at the time (~6 months ago) that delayed the communication to the IFTTT servers.  As a result lock change status could take upwards of 10 minutes to receive.  August lock claimed that was an IFTTT issue but I use IFTTT for lots of things and this is the only device that acts like this.

I hope you have better luck, I like the lock but communication outside of the August App is troublesome.

Just received my Aeotec units today and easily added them to the ISY.  I also added 1 Austin lock and it works great, opens and closes and shows locked/unlocked status.

When I try to add the second Austin lock, the Zwave searching status disappears as if the lock was added but it's not showing up in the admin panel.  The Austin app finishes the zwave setup and says it was added.  I don't have any other zwave hubs in the house (that I know of), but it almost feels like it's getting grabbed up by something else.

I only purchased 2 of the Aeotec's units and they both added to the admin application very quickly/easily.  The second lock is roughly 15 feet from the Aeotec unit.  There really is not what i would call line of site, a slight corner then a doorway.

Since I don't know anything about Zwave and they really don't seem to publish much about the range on the range extenders, do you think I need another range extender?  Is 15 feet too far?

Thanks.

Progress... good.  Have you ran a Z-Wave Heal process after adding the range extenders?  If not run that a couple of times.  If you don't have a lot of devices it won't take long to run through it.  After that's done then exclude the lock that wouldn't include properly and then try the include process again.

@SimplefalconNot sure how to exclude the lock because it won't add to the admin console.  When I run the Heal, I notice a Null Database error for UID=2 but I'm not sure what that is.

I currently show 1 lock and 2 range extenders in the admin console.  The lock that is currently added is for the garage and is working well.

Does the lock show up in your ISY like this or does in now appear as a lock and contact sensor?

I don't know the exclude sequence for the lock.  But just click the Exclude Device in the z-wave dropdown and start the exclude process from the lock.  That will reset/exclude the lock and remove any "trace" from the ISY.

Then do the Include of the lock again and see if it includes correctly this time.

I restarted the ISY and now the Zwave dongle is back.  Performed another heal.  I think I need to figure out how to resolve the Null Database error to resolve my lock issue.  I'll order another repeater and put it closer to the lock as well.

Does anyone know how to resolve the Null Database error?

That null database issue is likely a ghost device caused from the lock not including fully.  Read through the August docs on how to perform an "Exclude" from the lock.  Go through that and when done then run the z-wave heal.  If the Null DB message is gone then it's what I'm thinking.  If not then it may be something you need to contact UDI support about.

I ran into the null database issue too when I first tried to set up the lock.  I fixed it by factory resetting the dongle, 2 plugs, and the lock.  On the next attempt everything was included.  It's the nuclear option but as long as you don't have too many devices it's not that bad.

@saphotoexpress I had similar issues, but solved it a different way.

1. Remove August Lock from the door
2. Move 1ft from ISY
3. Include August Lock (pairing worked great 100% of the time, tested on multiple locks)
4. Reinstall August Lock on door
5. Perform Z-wave heal (if needed)

In my case, I had to add a single repeater after that since I was getting unreliable behavior but only on one of the locks.

All fixed, here's the steps I took to resolve the issue:

  1. Purchased an additional Aoetec Repeater bringing my total to 3 repeaters
  2. Removed all Zwave devices from the Zwave network
  3. Factory reset on ISY Zwave dongle
  4. Added back the Aeotec Repeaters
  5. Ran Zwave heal
  6. Added the Austin lock that was close to the ISY(this is the one that worked fine)
  7. Removed the other Austin lock that had been giving me trouble and moved it 1ft from the ISY and added it with no problems
  8. Ran the Zwave heal two times

Everything is working great now.  I had the event viewer open during the entire process and had no errors.

Thanks for all the help!

Great news, I'm glad you got it working.  I'm curious how the 2 nodes for each lock show up in your ISY, is it Door Lock and Door Lock 2?

@tmorse305

Yes, I installed the magnet and went through the calibration process in the August App.  I assumed that the "Locked" status shown in my screenshot was coming from that info.  When I manually turn the lock, the status in the Admin panel updates immediately.  Am I missing a node or is everything now combined?  My ISY firmware is v4.7.5.

Do you see the "Locked" status in your lock node and have another node that also shows locked?
