App control of device vs scene with Insteon.

Recommended Posts

I am coming from HomeSeer.  I have always wanted to play around with an ISY, so I picked one up to experiment.  I have a situation where my dining room and kitchen lights had the load up at the light fixture and only two wires going to the switch.  So, easy -  I install a micro dimmer up at the light, and swap out the switch for an Insteon dimmer and cap off the load wire.  Then I link the micro dimmer and switch together.  In HomeSeer, I only expose the micro dimmer in any app I am using.  If I switch the micro dimmer off through the app, the switch follows. In HomeSeer you are able to tell it, if a device is controlled through the app, sync all the responders.

So I try to recreate in the ISY994i.  I default the switches, and add to the ISY, then create a scene with the dimmer and switch.  Easy, everything works great when controlling from the physical switch. Through the web interface however, if I turn on the switch, or the dimmer they do not sync to each other.  I have to control through the scene.

I have not installed a mobile app yet, but figure it will work like the web interface - if I turn off the light, the switch is sitting there still showing that it is on.  If i turn off the switch through the app, the light will remain on.  It will only work correctly if I control through the scene.  But If I hide (if I can) the switch and dimmer, and only expose the scene, I won't be able to know the status of those devices because there is no on or off status of a scene.

Can I control a device directly (not through a scene) on a web interface or app, and have the other devices sync, as if I manually pressed the button on the switch?

Not directly. You could write a backup program which will turn on the other devices should the status of that device be off or on

As per lilyoyo1 above, write programs using status of the devices not control switched. This will monitor any changes to the devices, not the local controls..ie..paddles.

Be careful not to monitor every device using status, in a closed loop, or you will get a oscillating feedback loop that can tie up your ISY.
