GregE Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 Hi, I installed the z-wave module and was setting up a Minoston Z-Wave Smart Plug and I got it connected to my ISY. At least I think I did. The plug is a 2 channel plug but only 1 outlet installed. And if I go into the outlet in my ISY and turn it on or off I get a screen that pops up and tells me to wait. It looks like it is installing it. Then I get errors when both turning on and off. But I can hear the plug switch on and off. Any ideas what is going on and how I can fix it? Screenshots attached. Thanks Greg
Mecheng70 Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 Is there a device near this device? How many zwave devices do you have? Are any of them battery powered? Are there any errors in the log?
GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 Not really. It's maybe 4 feet from an insteon switch. This and a repeater are the only z-wave currently. Only battery powered device is an insteon motion sensor. I don't see any errors in the log but not really sure how to read it either. Greg
asbril Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 My only suggestion would be to exclude and then re-include the device. Make sure to include while close to the ISY. As a matter of fact, as you only have 2 Zwave devices, you should keep it close to the ISY anyway. The downside of Zwave is that it does not work all that well with only a few Zwave devices. So, when you have the time and the $$ get yourself a few more Zwave devices.

I'll give it a try.

GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 23 minutes ago, asbril said: yes, also wait a minute during the inclusion as sometimes it can take time. Now it's on the wall opposite the ISY and I can't get it to add.
asbril Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 Are you sure that you properly did the exclusion first ? BTW I looked up this plug and I have the same, though under a different brand name. It should work. Try exclusion again and first open the event viewer to see what is happening. Do the same when doing the inclusion. Another thing that you may try is to reboot the ISY, though most likely that is not the issue.
GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 No I am not. lol I just rebooted it. Selecting to remove/exclude it from the z-wave menu did nothing so I deleted it. I'll let it boot back up and try it again. Greg
GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 Ok I pressed the program button on it 3 times and I think it is removing it.
GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 So what steps should I take to add this device correctly?
GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 9 minutes ago, GregE said: So what steps should I take to add this device correctly? So what I did was go into the Z-wave menu and picked Add/Include. Then I went to the device and pressed it's program button 3 times to go into manual add mode. Looks like it got added, well 1 of the outlets at least. I would have thought I would have gotten 2 new devices in my list. This is the event viewer.
GregE Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 Well nothing is different. Still get the system busy window if I tell the device to power on or off and then the error message. If I click the Query button it clears the error on the device. Ugh.
lilyoyo1 Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 What's your firmware and UI? The device being near an insteon switch means nothing....insteon doesn't repeat zwave signals. Leave the device close to the isy for a while (within a couple of feet). Sometimes it takes a bit for all data to exchange between the device and controller. After an hour or so, does the errors clear?

Also check the event viewer Tools - Diagnostics - Event Viewer to see what it says while trying to include or exclude.
lilyoyo1 Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 To add on to what Asbril stated, delete is not the same as exclude. Deleting a device simply removes it from the admin console. The links to the isy is still in the device which will prevent you from re-adding.

Pressing query clears the error. Here is the event viewer.
asbril Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 if ZW004 is the device you are referring to, then it has not been fully excluded from the ISY. I don't remember the specific instructions for your device (*) but when excluding (Zwave - Remove a Zwave device), you may have to press the device several times. (*) That is one of @lilyoyo1's justified issues with Zwave; the fact that different manufacturers of Zwave devices have different procedures.... The newest Zwave devices (are supposed to) include by themselves when powered up.

Good to know. I went into exclude mode and followed the instructions with the device so I'm pretty sure I've got it removed now. I think I'll return this outlet and look for a single one. Any recommendations?

Having a houseful of Zwave devices (more than 70), I have learned that GE/Jasco and Homeseer have the best devices, with Inovelli at second level but with an innovative approach. As much as possible I stay away from other brands.

I don't use plug in modules so I can't help you there. I'm currently using the ge zwave plus receptacles though I may swap them out one day for the Leviton 700 series receptacles when they come out. I haven't used the 4.0 branch in ages so I can't say how they would work. I would recommend upgrading to 5.0. it's better to do it now before your zwave network grows

I usually just upgrade when they tell me it's available.
