Help Please. Unable to link I/O device to IoP

I have been able to link 29 of my 30 devices with barely an issue, but I had a premonition that I should leave my 2450 I/O linc device until last...and I did. 3 hours trying everyone's online advice from plugging in to same outlet as the ISY, plugging in a dual-band device into the I/O Linc, trying Link Mgmt/Control Linc and adding 2450 or Discover Device and nothing is working after 3 hours of trying. A few weeks ago when I was still using our Hub, we had our first water leak and the sensor did its job to warn us and triggered the electronic shut-off to shut down the water to our house. I know its possible that the device is worn out, but I just think its unlikely. FYI - Both phases of our electrical is bridged and I have not seen any device communication issues with our new IoP installed 4 days ago. I also cleared my Java Cache and performed a soft re-boot of my IoP.

What am I missing? Also, what would be an alternative? Zwave?

How are you trying to add it? Have you tried manually typing in the Insteon ID? Are you sure you are correctly reading the ID? What error message are you receiving?

How old is the 2450? (week/year of manufacturing is stamped on each unit, eg. 2313)

There IS a ZWave alternative, the ZOOZ ZEN17. I just set one up. Check the recent threads here. It is actually more capable than a 2450, but a little more involved to set it up.

If you go Z-Wave (which you probably will eventually), I'll pass on the suggestion to keep it to the 700 series devices, with the supported ZOOZ ZST10 700 dongle on the Polisy. Also, the Aeotec Series 7 repeater/amplifier for a sparse setup has been recommended.

I have a complex Insteon network, but am a complete newbie to Z-Wave. I guess in time we will all get more familiar with it.

Manually typing the Insteon ID and confirmed using the correct ID. “Cannot determine Insteon engine” is the error message received. I have followed the factory reset guidelines multiple times. I even plugged the 2450 into the same outlet as the IoP and closed the door to maximize signal. Worth noting is that this is the only device I have that is not dual band and I am using the Insteon USB Dongle.

Dated Jan 2018. I do realize zwave is an option, but was hoping for a solution that would integrate with the Insteon water leak sensors.

The 2450 is power line only. So it has to be with in RF communications range of USB Dongle. To a dual band module that can communicate on the power line to the 2450.

The 2450 also had a switching power supply chip in it and depending on its age. May have a failing supply or is the original I1 signaling standard. That used a large amount of peeks and pokes to do one link.

If you have an extra dual band plug in module. You can try and plug it into the outlet on the front of the 2450 and see if anything changes to link it.

After 3 hours of failure yesterday and 8 hours of sleep last night, I had to try one more time. So far, I have tried:

1. New Insteon Device

2. Link a ControlLinc

3. Start Linking

The 2450 was plugged into the same extension cord as the ISY and none of the above worked. No other options seemed viable until I saw “Link a Sensor / Open-Close Sensor”. It worked, but I am cautiously excited until I hear back from the Pros in this forum. It wasn’t set up as a device, but as  2 functions - sensor and relay. What is strange is that it changed the devices ID number but it still turns on and off in ISY. 
 

Now I have to read how to link a water leak sensor to this device, if it’s possible. All suggestions welcomed.

Did you do a factory reset on the IOLinc before you tried to link it?

"Cannot determine Insteon engine”, means the PLM is unable to communicate with the device.

If you linked it to the ISY using a different device type, there could be unforeseen consequences. 

Open/close sensor is a battery operated device and should not be used to link a hardwired device.

What is the address of your IOLinc xx.xx.xx, as it's possible you may have typed in the wrong address. It's easy to misconstrue the 8 and B

Yes. Actually I factory reset 3 times since I made over 40 attempts to link this device. 

Thank you for the warning re: battery and hardwired devices. I plan to do weekly tests for at least a couple of months to determine future action if needed. 
 

The device ID has a Zero, but also tried 8. I also thought the device may be a 2458 instead of 2450. Nothing worked. I also tried auto discover and nothing. I don’t believe I have ever put this much effort into linking a device.

Changes which number, the 6 digits you just replied above?

There's many cases were people can't read the label, smarthome has a poor font choise... D and 0, 8 and B, are some of the numbers/letters that are hard to tell apart. 

the 2 devices i.e. sensor/relay part is correct...

Yes. It changed the 0 (zero) to D. I noticed years ago that Insteons font choice could be improved. It clearly looks like a Zero or letter O.

Your IOLinc is a fairly recent version.  Your hex address is clear, so there's no chance of any digits being misread.

Delete the device from the ISY

Do a factory reset on the device by unplugging it, then hold down the set button while you plug it in. After a few seconds you'll get a long beep, continue holding in the set button until the beep stops.

In the admin console go to Link management, New Insteon device. type in the 6 digit hex address and click OK. The ISY should auto discover and install the correct device.

What your reading on the label IS a "D" not an "O" If you look really closely the left corners are square, the right corners are rounded:

so you have the device correctly added to the ISY at this point.

Edit to add:  It will never be the letter O the characters are hexadecimel so they stop at F in the alphabet

Wow!!! Thank you so much. I would swear that was a Zero which is the way I tried to link it. Thanks for solving this problem. Much appreciated!
