Restoring PLM with Polisy Pro taking forever!!!

Recommended Posts

I migrated from my ISY to the Polisy Pro on 6/10 at about 3pm. it is now Sunday Morning 6/12 at 11:00 AM and it is still restoring. Is this normal? (System Busy and Progress bar keeps going from 0-100 over and over.

I have over 125 devices and at last count I had about 950 links in my PLM. The "New PLM" is a 2412U. I know it is not dual band but it's what I could find new in the box on Ebay. My Old PLM I used with the ISY was the type connected an ethernet cable.2413S I think?

Any Ideas?

Not the expert here but have been through the process.  I would suggest not normal and try again.  Let us know how it goes.

sure.  also you may want to make sure the PLM works before you restore your whole big system.  just add an extra device to it and run a small program.  then you know it works for a small setup.   then try the restore.

@Michaelv, Did you mean the new PLM is a 2413U? Or is it in fact a 2412U?

2412U is not listed in the Polisy user guide as an option. 2412S is listed, not sure if the U is compatible or not.

Why aren't you using that PLM with your Polisy.  Although the cable was in fact and ethernet cable it wasn't being used as one, it was carrying serial data.   Using your old PLM with polisy is your best bet.

The 2412U has the same ~2000 link database in it as the 2412S. It is probably like the 2412S and the ISY994i. The ram is slower and many had problems around 800 Links.

If the PLM database was fresh abd all the devices had to be added. Every link is every device has to be updated with the new PLMs address. Along with the modules added to the new PLM.

The 2413PLM is serial as pointed out. Just used a RJ45 network style cable. Some here have made a cable to go from the 2413S PLM to a DB9 serial type connection, if needed.

To Mr. Bill, The reason I moved to the Policy was that I could purchase two new model 2412U PLMs on Ebay as my existing 2413S PLM I was using with my ISY had failed once. I had the capacitors replaced put it back into service with the ISY and decided it was time to move to the Polisy as I could use the 2412U PLMS. I would have just bought a new 2413S but as we all know, Smarthome no longer exist presently and I also though I could do more with the Polisy that with just the ISY. So, to use the old 2413s with the new Polisy kinda defeats the purpose why I made this move. That being said, are you saying that I can just plug the ethernet cable from the 2413s into any of the ethernet ports on the back of the polisy and it will work?

OR, does any one know where iIcan get a new dual band PLM that will work with my Polisy Pro?

The 2413S has a serial interface and needs to be connected to the DB9 jack on the Polisy using the cable that was furnished with the PLM. If you don't have the cable, you can purchase one here:

PLM Serial Cable - Smartenit

The easy migration path would be to use your existing 2413S PLM which is already populated with your devices.

Smarthome is back in business with a new owner and hopefully they will start manufacturing the PLMs again.

Read the Smarthome thread for the latest updates

You will need to find or make a cable that goes from RJ45 to DB9. The RJ45 connectors on Polisy are Ethernet not rs232.

thank you Techman,

Just ordered the cable and will use it but I still have the problem that I cannot restore my new 2412U PLM with the Polisy.

That's what started this Thread.

IO am just going to pull the plug and start over.

Thanks

I’m guessing you are in an odd state. Some of your devices have the 2413s PLM address and some were updated to the 2412 PLM address.

@Michaelv

The following is from the Polisy documentation. The 2412U isn't listed as supported

Polisy supports the following PLMs: 2412S and 2413S through the DB9 connector on the back. 2413U and 2448A7 through the USB port on the back. If you have a 2413S (serial), you will need a cable that looks like this

I know, I pulled a ticket with UDI Tech support and Michel told me it should work but never tested.

Not sure what you mean. I am using the 2413 s with my ISY and trying to use the 2412U with the Policy. If I mixed up the terminology in my threads I do apologize.

Is that what you meant?

It appears from reading that some of your individual switches etc may have had the Insteon address of the 2412 PLM written to them. Others may still have Insteon address of your 2413 in them. Hence your network is an odd state.

When you start over, not only does Polisy need to get in proper state but all devices will eventually need the address of the PLM that’s in place. I don’t have advice but I’d evaluate it. Maybe ask UD.

I found that disabling query devices on startup resolved this for me while troubleshooting. Can re-enable later after your restore is done.

I’m still confused as how would you know this?

You were restoring a PLM and it appears you stopped it and are going to start over. Restoring a PLM writes all the links to the new PLM and IoP then goes through one device at a time and replaces the old PLM address with the new PLM address inside the device.

If you stop it mid process and it wasn’t just a hang before it really got started, I’d think your individual devices have a mix of old and new PLM address.

Peace out.

How do I resolve this?

I’d reach out to UD and describe what has happened. They’ll know if it’s an issue and how to correct.

I just didn’t want you to miss opportunity to get expert advice before the start over process begins without expert guidance considering how it failed/ was restarted in middle of PLM restore.
