at a loss

I have been using a 99Pro for about five months or so with little to no problems.

Starting about a week ago it started to have issues with being able to communicate with the various devices. The problems are intermittent and bounce around all over the house. One will not work and then be fine a few hours later and then not work again. Only a few are consistent. Everything used to work.

I have added nothing in the house that would be a sudden change. I know of no reason that this should happen.

So today I decided to work with it and did a factory restore (even though it says it will not help with you just restore your backup, but why not), updated to the .12 beta, and then restored the isy, then the plm, and then the devices.

Everything worked fine for about two hours and then it started again. Errors communicating with devices in different parts of the house. I noticed that a number of them showed a ramp rate of 9 minutes which I have never seen before.

I went ahead and moved the ISY to the opposite side of the house on a circut branch that is not used and the problem persists.

The PLM was purchased new with the ISY and has the later firmware that I thought was supposed to be problem free.

I do have two of the version 2 access points to bridge the phases.

I am at a loss as to where to start troubleshooting...

and ideas?

Thanks guys...

Hi CT,

Two questions:

1. Do you have any SwitchLinc version 35s?

2. Do you have any RF SignaLincs?

If you do, then rest assured that more than 90% of the problems you are experiencing are due to those switches and/or the SignaLincs.

If not, then we would have to go through some observation period:

1. When you start having communication issues, TURN all your devices OFF. Do you still have the same problem afterwards?

2. Do you have any CFL, Halogen, or Low voltage lighting? If so, when you have communications errors, remove those devices (unplug or take the set button out) one at a time and retest

3. Finally, we gotta make sure that your phases are bridged. Since your system works properly for 2 hours, I do not think this to be an issue

With kind regards,

Michel

Fast response as always...thanks.

It looks like I have a combonation of v27, v28, and v37 switchlinc dimmers as well as one swtichlinc relay that is a v35. Is the relay v35 bad? I have had it for the entire time I have had the isy though.

I do not have any RF signalincs only the new access points (2).

Should I switch out the v35 relay and see what happens?

Turning off the loads do not seem to make a difference.

I have had the issue with noisy CFLs and have ended up replacing (most) of them with incadescents (ironic).

Would it help to just factory reset of everything and start over adding one at a time?

thanks...ct

Hi CT,

First of all, factory reset should be your LAST option.

I do recommend just pulling out the set button on your SWL 35 and see if that makes any difference.

If turning off all the lights makes no impact whatsoever, then we have to figure out if there are any patterns (i.e time related) when comm errors happen most. Is it possible that when the Plasma TV is on you get most of the errors?

Do you have any devices that are not INSTEON controlled?

With kind regards,

Michel

Michel,

Is there a chance something is wrong with the unit itself? I put it in my bedroom so I could keep an eye on it. The send and receive lights never blink at all. I could have sworn that they used to. From looking at the manual it appears they should blink with any insteon traffic to and from the unit. When I log on to the admin console it says 'system busy' and seems locked for long periods of time.

It is literally on the same circuit as a number of my insteon switches and it does not see them.

Thanks...

My ISY99is RX LED does flash with Insteon messages on the power line from other devices. Like sending a RemoteLinc scene on the Insteon network.

During a My Lighting Query. My TX; RX and Mem LEDs flash.

Does the LED on the PLM flash with Insteon traffic?

Yes, the PLM light does flash at what seems to be the same frequency.

The memory led on the ISY also flashes occasionally when I am logging into the admin console for example...

Hi CT,

It is possible that something is wrong with the unit but I would not take RX/TX lights as an indication. The best way to test if traffic is sent/received is by using the Event Viewer on level 3.

Please note that SWL 35 are usually the culprits for communications errors. And, please note that their behavior is quite intermittent: all of a sudden you might lose the ability to control some or all of your scenes regardless of whether or not these devices are members thereof.

Hi,

As suggested I have removed the one v35 relay with no change. I took your suggestion and made the level 3 log. I tried to attach it but apparently that is not an option so I posted it below. Does it give you any ideas? I started the log and then right clicked on my lighting and clicked query.

It is still not seeing switches on the same circuit and then it is seeing one switch in a dual gang box but not the other.

Thanks...

Hi CT,

There are two things that bother me:

1. It can communicate with one of the devices in a gang box but not the other

2. All those INST-ACKs without any INST-SRX

Unfortunately, these are precise symptoms of SWL 35 issues.

In the gang box where only one device is communicable, is any one of the devices SWL 35?

With kind regards,

Michel

The v35 relay is actually in a box by itself. I used the airgap switch to turn it off. Should I remove it completely?

The one example of it communicating with one switch and not the other I can remember off the top of my head this morning is a box with two v37 dimmers.

Pulling the Air Gap should remove the power from the module. You should not have to physically remove it from the wall switch box.

The older revision relay models didn't have a Air Gap Switch and in that case it would have had to be disconnected.

Hi CT,

It would be best to start with the gang box where you have two devices one of which you cannot communicate with.

The first thing I would like to know is the types of devices in that gang box. In short, let's divide and conquer!

With kind regards,

Michel

Hi...Well I had some time to look at this tonight and to get the information you requested.

I logged into the console and received about five or six of the popups for switches that it could not communicate with.

One of them was in a dual gang box with a switchlinc relay v.37 and a keypadlinc dimmer v.2C.

By the time I got to the one that was not communicating to see what model of switch it was it was suddenly fine.

In fact, every switch was fine and there were no problems. Two minutes later one switch dropped off. That switch is a Icon Switch Dimmer v.27. I right clicked on query a few times and it then came back. I used the event viewer and it shows:

Here it is about 15 mins later and everything is still working but that one switch is now not communicating again. Here is the log now:

2010/03/05 21:09:53 : [iNST-ACK ] 02 62 03.72.5C 0F 19 00 06 LTSREQ (LIGHT)

So, since only one is showing an issue now I guess we can start with that one...

Thanks...CT

Hi CT,

Where's your PLM in relationship to your computer/router/monitor? In the same vein, where's the problematic switch in relation to your PLM?

It seems to me that we have something that produces enough noise to stop INSTEON communications.

With kind regards,

Michel

To close this one out for anyone having similar issues:

I had a chance to work with this again about a month or so ago. I have a equipment rack that is in the same subpanel as the circuit the ISY was on. The rack has several amplifiers, a ethernet switch, two AVRs, and a few UPSs.

Although it has been working fine the last year or so apparently something became too noisy and was interfering with the insteon signal.

I installed this filter in front of the outlet that the equipment rack plugs into and it solved the problem:

(and BTW, they are now selling it for over $50 less than I paid for it. Nice.)

It says it is for X10 but it worked for me...

Thanks for the update.

Yes the XPF is a nice filter, but is LARGE to fit in to many electrical boxes.

Maybe they are not selling well and Smarthome is lowering the prices. To be close to what many EBay dealers are selling them for.

That is a great point I should have added. It is pretty large. I was lucky that the outlet I put it on backed up to an unfinished area which allowed me to add a large enough junction box to stick it in.
