New eisy with serial kit won't connect to PLM

Featured Replies

Just received my new eisy with the serial PLM adapter kit. Installed, upgraded, and restored ISY-994 backup. PLM doesn't show up. Tools-Configuration->PLM Status shows: "0 0 0 v0 / Not Connected". The blue light in the USB to Serial adapter is lit up. I used the blue cable that was included in the serial kit to go from the adapter to the PLM and plugged the adapter into the USB on the back of the eisy. I've looked at the posts of others who have had a problem and checked to ensure I have Insteon support selected and I've rebooted the eisy several times. No luck.

Rebooting which way?  For hardware (serial port) detection to occur you may need to power completely down.

SSH -> sudo shutdown now

pstat -t finds a serial port at /dev/cuaU0 so I'm pretty sure the hardware is seeing it.

Just to be sure...your "installed, upgrade" means that you got the eisy upgraded?

IoX = 5.6   (Firmware & UI)
PG3x = 3.1.25
(Current versions as of this post)

On the eisy I would press the power button 6 times to force a power down. The blue light will eventually turn read. (prior link to wiki for Multi Function Button)

  • Once eisy shuts down (red light on power button)
  • Pull the power to the eisy
  • Unplug the PLM
  • Wait a minute
  • Plug in the PLM
  • wait for solid green light (or maybe 30-60 seconds)
  • Plug in eisy - wait for it to completely boot (maybe a few minutes)

If still not working make sure you followed the pin out for the adaptor. Perhaps something is crossed up there.

Yes, I've run "Upgrade Packages" so I'm up to 5.6.0. Just tried the restart procedure you've suggested with no luck. I've also tried a spare PLM. I'll find the pinouts and ensure it's wired correctly but the DB9 to RJ connector and cable are what came with the serial kit I just received so I wouldn't think I'd need to fiddle around with that.

I linked to the pin out in my prior post. You have to alter the adaptor to use the specific wires shown from the UDI site for the adaptor. I'm not sure if they've set it up prior to shipping out or if you have to wire it as such.

I'm guessing that you don't still have the old serial wire that came with the PLM? It was tucked away in the box packaging so many people didn't keep it since the ISY994 used a standard cat5 from PLM to ISY994 even though it was using serial communications.

@DGXCampbell,

If usbconfig shows FTDI driver + Admin Console | Configuration | Insteon support is checked, then please submit a ticket and we'll do a remote session.

With kind regards,
Michel

Hi Michel,

Yes, Insteon Support was checked in Configuration.

I had an Ableconn USB to Serial dongle with PL2303HXD chipset handy so I plugged that in and rebooted. It's all working now. I can switch back to the supplied adapter and gather some info, or let you remote in, if you'd like, but perhaps it was just a bad adapter.

@DGXCampbell

If you don't mind changing it one more time (and rebooting), if it does not work I'll send you a refund (please send your invoice to sales@universal-devices.com).

With kind regards,
Michel

Michel, I tried it and it doesn't work. It shows up in usbconfig but a "pstat -t" shows the device as not opened. Do you want me to return the device or just toss it?

@DGXCampbell, thank you SO much. Please send your invoice to sales@Universal-devices.com and request for a refund. You can toss it.

With kind regards,
Michel

Just wanted to post a final followup to this thread. I purchased another Sabrent USB to RS-232 dongle, (the same model which came with the serial kit). I plugged this into the eisy to try and definitively determine if it was the hardware. The new Sabrent works fine. Bottom line, the dongle which came with the original kit was bad.
