smithnc Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Is there a way (easy way?) to write events to syslog? I like getting custom notifications when the garage door has been opened or a sensor has tripped but I would like to write notifications to a syslog server instead so there is a record, but not necessarily an email or a SMS message.
paulbates Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 (edited) No, it requires some "sawing and banging", eg manual work, but can be done. This example is based on a raspberry pi, but guessing the method could be modified for other platforms. Take a look here, especially down around post 4: There is an older node server, pre-polyglot called Nodelink. It was many products integrated into one application, and it included a data logger that could write to syslog. I used it, but it was many years ago. Edited August 2, 2024 by paulbates

I don't really know what a syslog is (I even Googled it and still don't understand!). However, I log my variables into a Google Sheet every minute or upon certain events. Works great for me. The thread got somewhat hijacked, but others had input on how they log things. 1
