What is current status of Matter devices?

I’m not completely sure what that means

As I understand, matter devices can communicate via two options: wifi, or a "thread" network.  The thread network was developed as part of the matter ecosystem, I believe, and requires a thread border router in order to complete the system.  If a particular matter device connects via wifi, then I expect you would be able to add this device to your ISY, though there may not be full functionality.  If a particular matter device communicates via the thread network, then I expect that you will have little success trying to add the device to your ISY.

SmartWings has a motor that is "Matter over Ethernet"...  would that not be a third?  Not arguing!  I just want to be knowledgeable.

My experience is that one can use matter over wifi, but matter over thread is not ready yet.

Well that nanoleaf bulbs use thread, and I've tested them successfully.

Well Matter is over IPv6. Both ethernet and wifi are IP based so that isn't really a distinction, since the difference is at the physical and data link layers. The network layer is the same. Matter also implements IPv6 over Zigbee, which is what makes up the Thread communication option. This appears to be optimized for low power/battery device operation.

The implementation of Matter for the UDI controllers seems to have somewhat stalled, or slowed down. It's still in Alpha testing. It looks like a few other projects (like Homekit implementation) might have been given a bit more priority for the time being. The current release of IoX is still 5.9.1_18, and has been since April. It would be nice to have an update from UDI.

I have had different experience with nanoleaf bulbs, unfortunately.

Fair point.  I would assume that this is the same as wifi and would expect it to work.
