Loss of Text Formatting in Notification Templates

Featured Replies

Notification emails configured in eisy.ui are not properly formatted in the emails as sent and received. I experimented by changing the radio buttons for text, html and xml, but the format in the emails did not change. Everything is jumbled together in non-formatted plain text appearing in the email as it is shown on the left side of the screenshot, unlike the right side of the screenshot where formatting includes line spacing and indentation. ISY-994 preserved the rich text format in emails, and that's what I'm trying to achieve again. Is this a bug in eisy.ui or is there something I'm missing ? I'm using the latest production repo 1.2.2.

Thanks.

@Javi I'm having exactly the same formatting problem but with the Notification service and UD Mobile Send Message (email migrated notifications).

Migrated HTML formatted emails are coming through UD Mobile Notifications with visible line break <br> tags and paragraph break <p> tags. Saved as HTML.

Removing the HTML tags runs the all the text into one long string. Saved as Text.

Let me know if you need more details.

Using Eisyui 1.4.2

Are they set to HTML or TEXT on the bottom? Text will not translate to HTML

HTML cannot be sent in Notifications must be text. See UD Mobile Event Template that is automatically generated by UD Mobile.

Thanks, I removed the HTML tags and saved as text, it turned into this.

Hi @Javi , the formatted text with the HTML tags removed in the template in my first picture looks like this in UD Mobile, just like the template preview in EisyUI Notifications. Just one long string of text.

Ah, this was never a thing. Push Notification body has never sent or shown link breaks aside from Subject\nBody\nTime.

So nothing is broken in eisy-ui would need a feature request for investigation. Added issue 'Add Line breaks to Push Notification Body' ID: /eisy-ui/issues/108

The attached screenshot shows two emails as received, the one on the left was sent Oct 9th and is formatted properly. That notification template (text) was migrated from ISY-994 to eisy and it displayed as expected in the eisy program on Oct 9th. Then I edited the notification in eisy.ui changing some wording, but leaving the line spacing as it was, and now the formatting has been stripped out. The radio button was set to text.

Looks like when it is saved in eisy-ui the HTML breaks or tags might be removed. Will need to investigate.

Can you post an example from from one that works in Admin Console so I have a test case?

These emails are being sent by a Program when an "If" statement triggers an event. The attached (Sep 13) email was sent when I was still using the Java based Admin Console, but I'm using macOS Golden Gate now, so I have no option to use anything other than eisy.ui. The earlier email examples were sent from a Program that was migrated from ISY-994 into eisy (and the format remained intact), then the notification text was edited in eisy.ui (and the format broke).

Understood, I need the exact String that works.

My guess is something is being filtered out, however this is a legacy method and I don't have custom SMTP setup so I cannot test myself, I can only test that the string is saved typed.

The strange thing it works, sometimes.

The EisyUI notification preview is just one long string.

Update: Gemini AI stepped me through a way to add a life feed - unicode method.

Word Hex Shortcut

If you have Microsoft Word, you can turn the hex code line feed into the character using a keyboard shortcut:

  1. Open Word

  2. Type exactly: 2029

  3. Immediately press Alt + X together.

  4. The numbers 2029 will transform into the invisible LINE separator. You can then copy and paste it where you need it.

The Notifications preview window is still unformatted but UD Mobile displays properly.

Anyway for now my notifications are now readable.

Thank you, mmb, for the tip on using Unicode to "un-jumble" notifications to make them readable.

For anyone who needs to do this in macOS, here is what I did. Enable the Unicode Keyboard (System Settings, Keyboard, Text Input Source / + (add) / Others / Unicode Hex Input). Enable “Show Input menu in the menu bar” to make it easy to switch between standard and Unicode keyboards.

Open TextEdit with the Unicode keyboard active and create a new blank document. Type your message and at the location where you want a new line or new paragraph, hold the Option key while typing a 4-digit code.

Option 2028 (line separator)

Option 2029 (paragraph separator)

Copy your message to the clipboard and paste it into a Notification Template in eisy.ui. You won’t see the line returns or paragraphs, but the email message will have the desired formatting.

To verify this, you can create and save a test program to send an email. Use the contextual menu “Run Then” in the program to execute the command (send the email).

Glad to have a work-around for now. Hopefully, WYSIWYG will get enabled for notification templates in eisy.ui.

I found that the old Java admin console formats notification UD Mobile text perfectly. It is completely WYSIWYG and updates the new Web UI.

Might be due to selecting HTML (not the default)? However this may break other chars.

Nope. I just switched the notification to Text in the Java console and re-ran it. There was no change in formatting in UD Mobile.
