elvisimprsntr Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 I have an Elk M1 Gold which I have been using reliably for almost 2 years. I also have an M1XEP module and hardwired LAN connection between my Elk and the computer I use the ElkRP software on. I followed the instructions to update the firmware. I have done this successfully before without any problems. I already had 3.3.2 boot so I updated the firmware. The guidance from elk recommends updating the boot as well The main firmware seemed to update ok and i could re-establish comm using the elkrp software. The boot firmware seemed to update ok and the elk rebooted as i would have expected. Now my elk continues reset. The elk is supposed to automatically enroll the first keypad if reset to factory defaults. Any suggestions?

It sounds as if you have updated the main firmware before updating the boot firmware, which is backwards. IIRC, when you install new boot firmware, it erases the installed firmware, so I think you just need to re-install the main firmware.

According to the Elk documents the boot firmware update was optional for this release. Thus I followed Elk's recommendation to update the boot firmware afterwards, which is when the controller board started continuously resetting every 2 seconds, which i suspect is the watch dog timer timing out because the boot flash did not take. Kinda hard to re-flash the unit when it is continuously resetting. Besides the guidance from Elk says that updating the boot may only reset the unit to factory defaults. It says nothing about clearing the main flash. I've been told Elk can re-flash the board using a JTAG interface for a fee, but the turn around time might be slow. I still have not heard back from them. Elk typically doesn't like to deal directly with the consumer, so I contacted smarthome who offered an advance exchange. I get a new one in 2 days.
Michel Kohanim Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Hello elvisimprsntr, I think you might want to contanct ELK support as they do not activley monitor this forum. With kind regards, Michel
elvisimprsntr Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 Well the saga continues. I received and sapped out my elk cb and re-enrolled my devices. After reloading my configuration I was back up and running within no time at all. It had been suggested to me that I may have just been unlucky the first time, so against my better judgement I tried to update the boot firmware. I bricked a second unit. Clearly there is a systemic issue that Elk is not telling us about or is unaware of. I ordered a replacement board only this time which I will immediately get an RMA to return back to smarthome. This time I will wait until elk and smarthome figure it out and fix it.

Quixote Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 Strange. I haven't tested extensively, but I use windows 7 64bit with Elk RP and haven't found any problems. Mind you, I haven't updated my firmware lately, so I can't be sure.
