question about using 2nd thermostat to trigger heat on 1st

Hi,

So I had a venstar thermostat with the newest insteon adapter, and it was working perfectly. Now I've ordered a second thermostat which I plan to install upstairs using a 24v transformer for power, but it won't be hooked to a furnace at all.

I had gotten some previous advice here indicating that it would work to create a program somehow to have the non-connected thermostat control the connected thermostat through programming, but I started thinking about it and I wasn't sure how one would accomplish this. Is this easy and I'm just missing something?

What I want to do is have the heat come on in the house (only one furnace) when the thermostat upstairs gets to the set point I've determined, by somehow communicating this to the downstairs thermostat. Does this seem possible?

Thanks,

Frank

Get a wireless temp sensor setup, simple and relatively cheap, cheaper than a second thermostat, which you really don't need.

If you have the 1900, you can average the temp from the remote sensor with the thermostat temp sensor. The average temperature of the two will trigger the furnace, or not.

If you have the 1800 or 1700 you would need to get a second wireless sensor, and average those two to cover the up & downstairs. The temp sensor in the thermostat would be disabled.

Venstar Wireless Sensor Receiver

Attaches to, and then snugs into the wall space behind the thermostat.

Venstar Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Remote Temperature Sensor

Attaches to any wall. No wire to pull, runs on batteries.

When you say "average", do you literally mean it does a mathematical average between the two sensor? Would it be possible to just make it follow the remote temperature sensor?

The reason I'm doing this is I want the temperature upstairs (my bedroom) to be set precisely at a certain temperature, as I don't sleep well otherwise. I don't really care about the downstairs temp being so precise, so if there was a way to disable it and have it obey the upstairs, that would work I guess.

Also, will insteon and more specifically the isy still work with the remote sense? Thanks!

When using the above linked items, it can be set to either override the internal temp on the venstar or be the outside temp display on the venstar (which does nothing in your case). If you use just one remote sensor and have it set to override the internal sensor, then the venstar will only use the remote temp. If you have more than one remote sensor on the channel, then the venstar will automatically average the temp of the sensors (i.e. If one reads 76 and the other 78, then your temp onthe venstar will show 77).

So in your case, just use one remote sensor with the receiver.
