Brian H Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 The last few days I have been getting network communications errors. The Error and Mem LEDs are pulsing On as that is the indication of the problem. Error.log also has the messages. Is it normal for the MEM LED to stay on maybe five seconds longer than the Error LED does when the communications is lost? I have disconnected and reconnected the network cables in case there was a poor connection. Cycled the power on the router. Disconnected all network connections including the DSL Interface except the router to ISY99i. Maybe the latest beta is just extra vigilant in checking the network connections. It did seem to start right around the time I installed the latest as indicated by the date and time in the Error Log.
Michel Kohanim Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Hello BrianH, It's completely normal to see those lights as long as they go away. Yes, Mem light might stay on a little longer depending on the scenario. The main question is this: do you have any connectivity issues with ISY. For instance, ISY might be trying to renew the DHCP lease which might take a little longer but this does not mean that it failed getting DHCP lease. If you have any connectivity issues, what are the symptoms and what do you see in the log? With kind regards, Michel
Brian H Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 I have not seen any errors when acccessing the ISY99i. Just the constant RED LED and MEM LED sequences for minutes on end. Then fine for awhile. Michel Kohanim Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Hi BrianH, 2.8.16 and above are certainly much more watchful of network issues. This said, what you are experiencing seems to be out of the ordinary. Although benign, but there seems to be way too many of these warnings. I'll take a closer look shortly. In the meantime: 1. Is your ISY connected to the router directly or through a switch? 2. If a switch, is it a Gigabit switch? 3. If not, have you changed your router or its configuration lately? 4. And, finally, would you be kind enough to reboot your router and let me know how it impacts the problems you are having? With kind regards, Michel
Brian H Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 1. Router direct. D-Link DI-604 3. No same router and only thing I did lately was reset the routers clock for the log. I don't have it set to check the time servers. 4. Sure I will reboot it and watch the error log or see I catch the LEDs lighting.
Michel Kohanim Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Hi Brian H, Thanks so very much! Any updates? With kind regards, Michel
Brian H Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Not much changed. I still have the errors in the error log. Even at times when the PC is off. So I don't think some strange running program was doing anything. I did set it to check the Time Server every 24 hours but that didn't change anything from when I was only doing set to computer time every once and awhile. Now that isn't ruling out Murphy's Law and the router maybe getting old and tired.
ELA Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Hi Brian, I am no wiz at these types of issues but I did have a somewhat similar issue recently here: http://forum.universal-devices.com/viewtopic.php?t=6161 I found it very strange how often the error was logging. It may have nothing to do with your issue but I wonder if you tried a static IP address if it would matter? Not as a solution, but a diagnostic step? maybe not worth the effort?
Michel Kohanim Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Hi Brian H, Thanks so very much for the update. This is definitely not normal ... we are also going through the code to see if anything sticks out. With kind regards, Michel
Brian H Posted April 22, 2011 Author Posted April 22, 2011 I may have found the problem. It looks like my D-Link DI-604 maybe on its last legs. It is filled with a known bad brand of filter capacitors. I removed it and replaced it with a Linksys BEFSR41. Things do look better. Even queries are faster as is my Internet accesses. Only one error so far and it maybe a DHCP thing. Time User Code Message Thu 2011/04/21 06:49:01 AM System -100 [DHCP] state=RENEW I also have a problem with setting UPnP. It has enable as I expected but two other options I am not sure about. Allow Users To Make Configuration Changes Allow Users To Disable Internet Access.
Michel Kohanim Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Hi BrianH, That's excellent news! As far as RENEW, this is just an information message (DHCP renew took longer than expected). As far as UPnP, I strongly recommend disabling both options (security reasons) and configuring your router's port forwarding rules manually. With kind regards, Michel
Brian H Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Thank you for the information on UPnP. Right now it and the options are all disabled. That is the Linksys default.
