jpoje Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I just installed isy-99 and have successfully linked all my insteon lighting devices. I am having trouble with linking my remotelinks. I have tried entering the address from the remote itself and auto discover. I have tried numerous times and with different remotes. The program either does nothing at all to link the remotes or says something about a node? My "link a remotelink" menu and screen is not what it's showing online in the manual, so I cannot follow their instructions. My universal devices console is version is 2.8.16 and believe that is the most up to date version. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to link the remotelinks? Thanks for any suggestions.
Michel Kohanim Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Hello jpoje, You must use Link Management | Link a RemoteLinc. In the dialog, all you have to do is enter the address for your RemoteLinc. None of the other methods will work. Also, your RemoteLinc should be in programming mode: press and hold the Dim/Brt buttons for about 10 seconds or till the LED starts blinking. With kind regards, Michel
jpoje Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Can you confirm that this would be an example of a correctly formatted address (which is located in battery compartment of the remotelinks)? 11.C3.F6 If so, I have done this several times each time using a different remote. The remote was in linking mode (flashing) and was communicating with an access point as the access point light was flashing while the remote was in linking mode. Would the process be similar to linking a device, I mean should I see the program scanning 0-100% until it is programmed into the isy system (as I am seeing nothing happening)? Thanks again for your help.
Michel Kohanim Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Hello jpjoe, Yes, that's a correctly formatted address. The main issue seems to be that the PLM cannot communicate with the RemoteLinc. Is this regular RemoteLinc or RemoteLinc2? If the latter, then ISY does not yet support it and it will not work. If the former, would you please use Event Viewer on Device Communications level, retry, and copy/paste the output here? With kind regards, Michel
jpoje Posted September 18, 2011 Author Posted September 18, 2011 I have three handheld black RemoteLinc 1's (2400 I believe?). I do not have the newer style small RemoteLinc2. LeeG Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 jpoje From the Event Log it appears the RemoteLinc was not accessable. However, the "Device communications events" option was not selected so the actual commands issued and the responses were not traced. Suggest doing it again, being sure RemoteLinc is close to a Dual Band device and the RemoteLinc LED is blinking from pressing Dim/Bright buttons. Lee
jpoje Posted September 18, 2011 Author Posted September 18, 2011 I have already tried several times placing remotes right next to access point and used dim/bright buttons to put into linking mode. I saw the access point blinking like it was communicating with the remote. The remotes will not show up in Isy. Now, this morning, most, but not all of my devices I am receiving "communication errors, check connection". Isy will turn a light on with no problem and then when I go to turn it off, I will get a "communication error, check connection". Once the device has the red exclamation point next to it, I can no longer control it at all in Isy (manually turning on/off device is working fine and remotelincs control devices fine). I have included below an event viewer log with device communcations events chosen from the menu. Thank you for your assistance. LeeG Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 jpoje There is much more going on in the last trace than simply adding a RemoteLinc. Looks like there are pending updates to several devices that are being attempted at the same time. That activity will have to be cleared up before adding the Remotelinc. Lee
jpoje Posted September 18, 2011 Author Posted September 18, 2011 What would you suggest to clear up the issues going on? Restore devices? Restore Isy? I am still receiving the communication errors, check connections. Thanks for your assistance.
LeeG Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 jpoje I don't see a reason to Restore anything at this point. Something has happened to the Insteon network. An Access Point could have been unplugged or moved to an outlet that is no longer coupling the 120V legs. The PLM may not be working well. An appliance or CFL may be generating interference on the powerline. An older tstat adaptor may be flooding the network with messages. The list of possibilities is long. First, unplug the PLM for a full minute. That will reboot the PLM if there is a logical problem with the PLM. If the hardware has become marginal the power cycle will not correct. Look at what devices are having communication problems. Are they on the same circuit. Have any new appliances, chargers, etc been installed recently. Analyzing Insteon powerline communications problems are the process of eliminating possibilities. From the last trace devices 17.CC.08, 16.95.73, 1A.32.49, 13.5F.B6, 1A.31.C2, 17.CD.B6 are some of the device addresses with activity. Really need a calm environment when adding a new device. Lee
jpoje Posted September 19, 2011 Author Posted September 19, 2011 I was able to re-establish communication with lighting devices after reinstalling PLM to a different outlet and reinstalling/linking access points. Once that was achieved, I was able to link all three of my RemoteLincs to the ISY. Thank you once again for your help.
LeeG Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 jpoje That is good to hear. As an FYI, Access Points do not have to added to the ISY. There is no linking associated with Access Points and no configuration. The 4 tap Set button process verifies the Access Points are talking to each other on opposite 120V legs but performs no permanent linking or configuration. Something has happened on the circuit where the PLM was orginally receiving power. Problems with new devices on that same circuit may appear in the future. Lee
Brian H Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I agree with LeeG. You are fighting a noise or signal absorber on the power lines. You didn't have the PLM connected to the same circuit as the computer or in a filtered surge strip?
jpoje Posted September 19, 2011 Author Posted September 19, 2011 The PLM was originally installed directly into an outlet which shared a UPS (which has a printer/fax machine, internet modem, telephone and wifi equipment). I do have several UPS in another room connected to my home theatre/media closet and I have CFL's in some of my hi-hats throughout house. The home is new and electrical wiring is two years old. I do have one of my access points in a detached garage which is roughly 75 feet of electrical wiring away from the main house panel. I was going to purchase an additional access point for inside the house but thought when I purchased the PLM, it would act as an additional access point, but maybe I am wrong and need additional access points? My three remotes now show up in ISY but now do not control the light switches any longer. I manually re-linked one button on the remote to my office light switch and it works now. How do I use ISY to re-link my remote to it's switches without manually going around the house and re-linking them all? I used the third option when linking the remotes, to keep all existing links. Would I have to set up scenes for each remote button and the switch it controls? Also with a keypadlinc, I have it linked to a kitchen switch, but when I use the switch itself, the keypad link then has to be pushed twice in order for it to control the switch again. is there a way to program a button on keypadlinc to the switch so that it works like a virtual 3-way switch? Sorry for all the questions but, I DO APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP!!
LeeG Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Jpoje The UPS was likely a source of Insteon signal attenuation. They are well known for that. Using a FilterLinc between the UPS and the powerline usually resolves that problem. Adding a device using the “keep existing links†option should have defined Scenes with names such as Scene xxx which correspond to the link records found in the RemoteLincs. Linking with the Set button is not a good idea as it creates link records the ISY is not aware of which will eventually result in unpredictable operation due to link record issues. To link devices define an ISY Scene and add the corresponding devices to the Scene. For example, adding a KeypadLinc button as a Controller and a SwitchLinc as a Controller will result in the devices being cross-linked. The ISY assumes a Controller is also a Responder (if the Controller has Responder capability). Right click on the respective device node in the My Lighting tree and select Add to Scene. The Scene popup will have a button on the bottom of the window to select Controller or Responder if the initial choice by the ISY is not the desired choice. The RemoteLinc is one of the few devices that are Controller only. The RemoteLinc button is added as a Controller of a Scene with some other device either added as a Responder (such as an ApplianceLinc) or as a Controller such as a SwitchLinc. In the later case the RemoteLinc button will control the SwitchLinc but the SwitchLinc is not cross-linked back to the RemoteLinc as it is not a Responder. Lee
jpoje Posted September 19, 2011 Author Posted September 19, 2011 PERFECT. Everything went from frustrating to fun. I will get filterlincs if I have further issues. Thanks again for your help. I'm sure I'll be back here when I'm ready for programming ISY for IR & my Harmony Remotes.
Brian H Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I have a 10 amp FilterLinc on my UPS and the 2413S PLM in the unfiltered pass through outlet on the front of the FilterLinc.
jpoje Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 Started having issues again with ISY communicating with devices, so I purchased a filterlinc and installed on the UPS in question (above posts). I now can communicate with all devices on my network EXCEPT remotelincs. I have the remotelinc near the access point (as I did before when it was working) and have remotelinc activated (blinking). ISY continues to give me "reading failed" when I try to update the remotelinc. Is there anyway to check the PLM to make sure it is working properly and not defective? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Michel Kohanim Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Hello jpjoe, Has the RemoteLinc already been registered in ISY? I do not think the problem is the PLM but the signal NOT reaching the PLM. The best test would be to plug an Access Point right into outlet where the PLM is plugged into and then try registering your RL very close to the Access Point. If this works, then the problem is that the signals are not getting to/from RL. With kind regards, Michel
jpoje Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 FYI if it matters to anyone ever having same problems with remotelincs. The remotelinc in question started communicating again with ISY thru access point when I changed to a different brand of batteries in the remotelinc?? Strange, but I put that same brand in a different remotelinc and same thing happened, would work devices just fine on/off, etc thru access points, but would not communicate to ISY thru access points. Just curious, one further question, why wouldn't the remotelincs communicate to ISY placing them directly near the PLM? Isn't the "dual" PLM supposed to act as an access point? Thanks again for all your help.
LeeG Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 jpoje Brand of battery is not the variable. The condition of the batteries is. Likely the combined battery voltage was low enough not to be able to communication with the Dual Band PLM (assuming it is a 2413, not a 2412). Every device has a different reception pattern and sensitivity. Could also be the Dual Band PLM is not working as a Dual Band device or there is something in proximity to the PLM that is interfering with RF. Lee
