bseal Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I'm starting to get serious about buying some Insteon products, mostly lighting but possibly more. I'd want to get some sort of controller. From what I've read the ISY-99i is the fan favorite and more versatile. A feature i'd really like to have is the ability for the controller to trigger events based on who is connected to the network. Example: If my wife's and my cell phones are NOT connected to the network, no ones home and all lights should be off. If either of us are then certain ones are on. Does the ISY-99i Insteon controller have this ability? If not anyone aware of a controller that does? Thanks, Brian
apostolakisl Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 There was a thread about this just a week or so ago. The short answer is no. Maybe that thread was on cocoontech.com forum but I think it was here. There were some bluetooth ideas and some ideas to use the dhcp license handed out by a router to tell when you have gotten in range. The only other idea I can think of is to write an app for your cell phone that is instructed to hit the isy with a rest command when it joins your home network. I haven't a clue how you would write such a program. Probably doable on a droid since you wouldn't need Apple's permission. At present I have a keyfob I picked up on ebay for about $15 that is connected to 4 zones on my Elk. When I come home I push the appropriate keyfob button and that triggers an Elk zone which is synchornized with ISY and executes everything based on time of day and whatnot.
io_guy Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Interesting idea. I just put together a quick "Link" program to play with this. I setup my phone with a static IP in the router. The Link pings the specified IP address and sets a variable within the ISY depending on whether the return was a success. Seems to work ok - I had it auto-disable my alarm as I made it to the doorway. Some issues with this idea (my implementation anyway): - Not sure how continually pinging the phone will impact battery life - Assumes everyone is capable of setting a static IP for wireless in their router (otherwise I could try IP lookup via arp and Mac Addy) - I'm sure there's more The nice thing about implementing it similar to this is that no special software is required on the cellphone (aside from wireless).
