Hi

The new Venstar T5800 thermostat with Wi-Fi looks very interesting. Was wondering if any support will be available in the near future. Strangely the cost is less than the Insteon module for the T1800 and has far more features..

Thanks

Gary

We're building a new home and I'm looking to expand my home automation system to include the thermostats. I think we're going with the Venstar T5800 and I'd love to see support for it on the ISY-99i. I'm adding my vote.

The most recent update I got from venstar was "We are planning on having the Insteon module for the T5800 thermostat available around June or July of this year." You may want to wait it out.

I bought the T5800 since the guy from the tech support number Smarthome provides, assured me that they were weeks away from releasing a firmware upgrade that would make the T5800 Insteon compatible (He said the hardware was already on-board). That was at least a year ago. Luckily he didn't try to sell me some bridge.

But I too would like to get the T5800 and the ISY talking to each other.

I'm interested too - I had some email exchanges the other day with Venstar - here is the summary:

"Thank you for your interest in our thermostats and accessories! We are planning on releasing an Insteon module that will plug-in to the existing ColorTouch thermostats. However, we do not have a firm release date for this product. We are hoping to have something available by the end of the summer this year." - looks like they're dragging their feet on this one...

"The T5900 and T6900 will incorporate Humidification and Dehumidification features and should release on or before June 1st." - 2013 that is.

Count me in as interested as well. I wrote them on March 3, but got this in response. I did mention Insteon specifically.

Venstar is the Manufacture of the thermostats only. You would need to contact the manufacture of the home automation systems for future plans involving the T5800. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Hopefully Smarthome is working on something, but if ISY did something to connect directly, the support might be better. I know the current Insteon module is somewhat limited.

Count me in on wanting this.... Venstar has been saying for almost 2 years that insteon module was coming out for t5800 and also the t5900 that would be coming out... FINALLY the t5900 is out, but still no insteon for either...

I don't see this happening. Venstar needs Smarthome to develop this and since Smarthome developed their own range of thermostats they are unlikely to put any investment into this. Would be better off starting a poll on the Smarthome forum to get them to act.

Hello all,

Thanks so very much for the feedback and we already have this in our list.

This said, I have to emphasize that, like all other WiFi thermostats (EcoBee, Honeywell, NEST, Filterrete, etc.) this thermostat also has a closed API and requires communications with a cloud based service to which you have to register. As such, it stays pretty low on our requirements list since it breaks our philosophy of "autonomy".

With kind regards,

Michel

I don't for this to sound accusatory but if the APIs are closed how is Smarthome getting the Nest to work with their controller?

Thanks!

They would have signed an NDA to access that information. Some of Insteon itself is not documented to us mortals because we have not signed an NDA.

They either have a special NDA with Nest for their beta API or they Reverse Engineered the cloud connect like the other HA companies did.

I see a huge number of requests for UDI to make modules for various devices here on the forum. What everyone needs to remember is the ROI.

If 100 ISY users purchase a Nest module @ $40, that's a whopping $4000 for ISY. It's doesn't make sense financially for them to do this.

If you look at other HA companies, they rely on 3rd party developers to fill that void. In my opinion, UDI's time/resources would be better spent creating an API interface of their own to allow 3rd party developers to more seamlessly interact with the ISY.

Anyway, If you want to connect your ColorTouch, here's an option:
